My old 3d Model and Render program has stopped working and won't re-install (don't ask lol).  It was a bit old and clunky anyway.

So any recommendations for a 3d modelling program that can also render to a good standard?  It has to be free or reasonably priced.

Thanks.

Blender any time.

Being curious, what was your old modeling program?

Steve Elliott

I've heard good things about Blender...Why do you like it Mike?

It was Lightwave3d, Such a hassle with the hardware dongle and such, then it just stopped working yesterday.

Couple of things

  • Free
  • Runs well on low-end systems like mine
  • Endless tutorials and resources
  • All the features I need (modeling, rendering, animation) are there
I am still learning more about it. In the past I have handdrawn my stuff. Blender I used only to create basic models. But I want to achieve now a rendering look that looks handpainted. Even for 2D stuff.

Before Blender it was Hexagon which got me into modeling. But that is not supported anymore for a long time.

I like the sound of endless tutorials.  Obviously well supported.

Yes I love the rendered look - with simple low poly models.  My game has that look...Just need a new renderer now to finish the graphics.

You will like Blender. It has a learning curve but is very powerfull.

If you are going to try blender you should look into Filmic Blender.

This video here is explains what it does, and how to install it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Rooster, that was an interesting video.

As a photographer I understand dynamic range, so that's a great fix for realistic lighting.

Glad to be of help. ;D

I just stumbled on that video while looking for blender tutorials, didn't know anything about dynamic range before then.
It makes me wounder if that's why todays movies look like they have darker lighting than in the past.
