It could be a racer on rails.
Dunno if such a thing exists ... but there could be kind of "arrows" on the track. If you hit the button while on the arrow, the racer moves to the left or right "lane" (eg something to refuel, repair, speedup). The end of these lanes might either be "move or get killed" or auto-returning to the main lane (maybe an 45° instead of 90° arrow).
Instead of just 3 lanes you could even have 5 lanes ... with 3 being "main track" and it requires you to switch lanes here and then - to avoid certain obstacles.
This also means that you might need to "learn" tracks until you achieve to finish rounds.
Maybe an obstacle would just "slow you down" - instead of crashing. That way finding the right "lanes" will lead to faster rounds.

Instead of "arrows" you might also have colorful "lines" indicating that a button press would slide you into the "colourful lines" direction.

Another idea is that there are "ramps" ... if you move over them and are flying, a button it might create a salto, a "special movement" which gives extra points. Or you press the button on the "ramp" for super jumps or ... similar stuff.

bye
Ron

Looks fab, not much room to overtake though.  I guess this is the F1 Monaco of tracks then.   ;)

OK. today is all about levels. a level map has twists and turns, and decoration. how is it done?
Visually through a map editor:

Interesting approach.  So basically a 2d tile editor, but instead of data for particular sprites you draw lines, turns and trackside scenery?

Love the vector art, it has a special place in my heart and see the shield display takes me back to the classic Star Wars arcades!

Yep - you got it in one \o/
I know that I bang on about 2d maps a bit, but there is a good reason. working in 2d is very simple and most 3d is really just 2d with a height of some form....

Yep Me too - hence the total love letter to it with this :)

OK. Now for some actual game visuals...
This is the base map style

And just to prove there is life in my 2d shenanigans... with a different set of data:

The speed at the bottom has a red zone - lets just call it overdrive...

Looks good. So is the one button to control speed or direction change or something else?
