Here's a look at what I got up to at New Year:

fully transparent depth sorted particle system.
Shown is a single white particle system. This is duplicated 6 times with different colored lights. this shows the depth sorting, transparency and light coloring ;)

The looks pretty sweet 8) What happens if you have a dimmer light pointing to the side, does it merge the colours too?

Is this the sort of thing you mean? single white system pouting into the scene. there is a bright white light where it is sources and it is surrounded by colored lights. the system is set to 'flow' when it hits the floor

Thanks guys, still debugging, but lots of progress showing.
Here are 2 systems being tested. one steam from a pipe and the other is gas from a vent. they both use the same image which was quickly drawn by me.

You get a side shot showing the setup

and then a front shot that shows the 3d nature of the steam and the flow of the gas
