I think I like this better than the spectrum 128+ that came with a tape deck. If they had put a screen on it it could of been a laptop. I had one of these around 1988.  I had just as much fun back then as I do now but what I have now back then was a distant dream. How about the Oric1 the Einstein I'm so glad the japan crap that tried to take over with and standardize our computer industry failed miserably. I can't remember what they called it now.

Not the Oric 1. It's successor, the Atmos, was a much better looking machine. And it had a real keyboard too. I liked the original Oric, when I used to play around with it in the local Debenhams as a teenager, but it wasn't a good looking machine.

The MSX didn't fail. It was way ahead of it's time. It was a fairly successful in continental Europe and big hit in the far eastern countries, which was it's intended market. If it was a failure, then there wouldn't have been four generations of the machine. And if you want to talk about standards, then there is the IBM PC and it's clones with some of it's own failures for standards that major players in the industry tried to push.

Now as you have mentioned the two computers that didn't do too well. The Oric-1 and it's successor the Atmos couldn't compete with the ZX Spectrum and the Taunton Einstein wasn't a commercial success, but from what I've read, was popular with software houses as a development machine.

What killed off the Taunton Einstein was it's price. And what finished the off the MSX is a bit complicated, but you could say it was down to the delays of the finalisation of the last MSX standard and other manufactures had moved on to other things.

I have 2 x Oric Atmos 48K's which have very nice keyboards and a very good looking machine. It was popular in France.

There are two other very underated computers. The Enterprise 128K and the Sam Coupe MGT. Price must of killed these two as well. There both capable of being the Zx Spectrum with more feature's. A bit like the ZX Next :-X

I've got 2 Atmos and on Oric-1. The Atmos keyboards are easy to service, the is providing you have the equipment.

What killed the Enterprise 64/128K was that it was delayed due to technical issues, the custom graphics chip was the main issue. When it was finally released, it was still plagued by that chip. My issue 4 has such a chip. When it gets warm after 5 minutes, I start to see start to see white edging on graphics. Later. issues don't have this problem. At the time of the Enterprise's release. The Amstrad CPC 464 was on the market for a year. And if I remember, the Amstrad CPC 464 was priced dropped a year later, so people were more likely to buy an Amstrad CPC 464 with a monitor, than pay the same price for the Enterprise 64, even though the Enterprise had much better specifications.

The MGT Sam Coupe just happened to come along too late and over priced. If zilog had gone ahead with the Z800 series of CPU's (these would have been compatible with the Z80), or MGT had use the Z280 (the attempt to revive the Z800), then there would have been a slim chance of it being a success.
