If my computer wants to do an update at shutdown,I opt to hibernate instead. Then I can update when I want.

Seems like there are tools to decide when you want it to update.

If you have a laptop and never reboot it, it's probably going to update when you do.  Keeping your stuff updated is a good idea, as you catch zero day exploits ASAP.  And rebooting is a good idea too, since I can't tell you how many problems people have with their computer that magically go away when they turn it off and back on again.

Just had my golden oldie updated to Win10 V1809 and it BS Of Death on me 2x already while just typing text on AGK forum!
Seems ok now, perhaps was still doing some finishing up in the back , but boy that shouldn't happen.

What was great though(or *not* depends how you look at it) that it preserved the text I was typing and I could just continue.

Also, I never understood why-oh-why an only 4 character pin is 'more safe' then a lengthy complex password.

Ok, took some win updates, closing open tabs in browsers, but now appears to be somewhat 'workable' (until the next BSOD, had one again yesterday).

Fortunately, was able to get another machine (with more muscle power also) where this is not happing on. However this also didn't update itself to the latest and greatest 1809, so decided to leave that as is for now, before things go haywire there too.

What are the specs of your museum hardware? ;)

Steve Elliott

Windows 10 is not going to run well on museum hardware.  Linux would run smoother though.
Win11 64Gb 12th Gen Intel i9 12900K 3.2Ghz Nvidia RTX 3070Ti 8Gb
Win11 16Gb 12th Gen Intel i5 12450H 2Ghz Nvidia RTX 2050 8Gb
Win11  Pro 8Gb Celeron Intel UHD Graphics 600
Win10/Linux Mint 16Gb 4th Gen Intel i5 4570 3.2GHz, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 2Gb
macOS 32Gb Apple M2Max
pi5 8Gb
Spectrum Next 2Mb

My by now archeological relic  ;D  is an HP Pavilion Core 2 GeForce 8400M GS with 4GB RAM, 256GB SSD(primary) and 256GB HDD(original, which I put into a caddy and in place of the, since Win7, obsolete ODD).

But after some more updating and closing things in the browser(s) it now appears to be more stable. Yay!

BTW: on my new Asus i7 7700HQ @ 2.80GHz, 8GB, intel HD630 & NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050, 512GB SSD(yes, a little beasty 8) ) the hibernation option was disabled by default.

I've enabled this, but I read somewhere on the net that hibernate may interfere with FastStartup/Hibrid Shutdown.
Anybody has experiences with that?

Can I just moan on about bloody windows here?

Thanks....

Compiling nice and straight, then up pops 'windows must restart'. NO I DONT WANT TO RESTART.

So windows get narky and blacks the entire screen and suspends compiling. Need to shut down the app and restart.

Way to go MS....!!!!!

I use Windows 10 LTSC 2019 :)  Thank me later.

On my rig hibernation was always off.
The old rig from my son have it activated after a fresh install. But i deactivate it.
I donĀ“t know for what it should useful.
Rick, Congratulation to your new system.

Thanks c0d3r9.

I love hibernation, for takes me straight back to where I was prior to shutdown, no need to reopen apps and stuff.
Therefore I've re-enabled it, however now I've come to think of it: Windows 10 has the new "Time-line"  feature.

I'll try and see if that sort of does the same..

hmmm i never have xx apps open for that it could be useful.
But if its helpful for you....
Timeline -> never used.

Rick Nasher

Well, e.g:

Coding in AGK and also looking up some stuff in the online manual and editing some 3d model for it.. ding- time to go sleep.
Next day, start off right where left it while not having to reopen all that stuff individually.

Rant!! Back in the old days I always use to feel I was in control of my pc and it was working for me but nowadays Windows seems to be fighting against me at every turn or just doing its own thing while I get in the way of its function. There are 2 processes I now have to kill off everytime I boot my PC as they thrash my hard-drives constantly (SEDLauncher and Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry). Booting up my pc takes 5 minutes plus, before its usuable. I normally strum a few chords on my guitar while I am waiting. The constant updates every other day are driving me nuts. Also games filling my disk space with copious gigs of dlc that I am never going to pay for/unlock. And I can't do a clean install without losing all my saved files etc.

If it wasn't for the security issues I'd go back to XP/2000 in a heartbeat.

What are your system specs?  Both my laptop and my desktop boot in 12-14 seconds flat every time.

Rick Nasher

I think you actually can do a reinstall that preserves your files in win 10, which might help.
hold down shift at pressing restart and see if you have any options from there, but backup files first.
What is your win10 version btw. You can get it by entering winver in the search menu.
1903 is the latest one.

I've updated the old beasty to the latest and must say it's rather more stable and usable now, but it's an individual thing from machine to machine. I also always run HWMonitor from CPU-Z to check temps/cpu usage on the golden oldy..
