How do other people get round Emails being deleted because of an .exe or a Link to another site. :(

Shouldn't it be up to the person on the other side if there going to use it or not!?

What ways are there of getting around this?

Kind Regards Baggey

Potential problems when it comes to attachments / links. A simplified list:

1.. The recipients server blocks them.
2.. The recipients server uses 3rd party spam apps that block them.
3.. The recipients client app blocks them.
4.. The senders mail server doesn't allow it.

Not all mail hosters have control panels to allow configuring attachments and for good reason but links shouldn't be such a bad thing.

If sending attachments then you could try zipping them up and then renaming the file to from myFile.zip to myFile.abc and then see if you can send it. A caveat being that some servers will actually look at the file whereas other will just go by the extension, so it may still be blocked.

Most mail "services" check attachments for their content too. Linux users are used to ignore file extensions and use the magic bytes to identify stuff.

So renaming does only help for most simple filters. But what helps a lot: creating archives with password secured file lists too (not just the content). Not all archive types support it but zip should do.

Of course it creates a bit of a hassle for the receiver that they have to enter a password but yeah, works.

Anyways - most of the time this only works for small stuff as many "free mailers" have a limit of 10MB attachments (or mail size at all). Think it is also a kind of default for many postfix installations (you can check on commandline of your server: postconf | grep message_size_limit).
With the todays attitude of "what do 10 or 20 Megabytes matter compared to the 100gig of assets of a game" ... this is a bit too few.

I find even if you do a .zip file and an .exe is init it's getting blocked so. I think outside the box and try and change the .exe to say .abc

It will still be picked up?

I understand for some good reasons content is being blocked! But they need to sort there acts out. As if im sending a genuine .exe code pics etc... What is wrong with that.

I feel all the dogooder's are now spoiling things for genuine internet users? With harmless intenstions >:(

Baggey, who are you sending files to via email anyway?

Most people will just either share the file in iCloud, or drop it somewhere and send the person a link to download it.

Baggey: maybe read what I wrote.
Password protect the archive - and ALSO the file list - else they can still check what files are "inside" (not the content but the filenames - and thus they see "myapp.exe" and might still block).

To me, this situation is getting worse and worse, and not just for email, like, now, Edge/Chrome will put the blockers up if you download something and you KNOW it is a false positive. And when you manage to download/open whatever, MS Defender will give it a sniff, notify you there is a "potential" threat, I quote the potential bit because it is pretty much saying that there might be a threat, not that there is an actual threat, but regardless, it will remove completely from the folder, and then you have to piss about in security settings to mark it safe.

It does my head in, like, just let ME decide there and then if something is to be deemed safe, if I'm not sure, fine, get it out the way, but if I've built something from GIT, or downloaded something from a safe source, don't let the fact some shithead somewhere has used the same tool to do crappy stuff with it, and now we all have to suffer.

But this is the way it's going unfortunately, giving in to a few more Windows version, I think Windows will go the way of Apple and everything will have to be signed digitally, maybe software will only be available through the Store app.

Freedoms we are used to in regards to this are indeed getting thinner and thinner as the years go by...

And it's shite!

*And yeah, before anyone replies "Linux", I know I know, but there is still quite a bit of stuff I use Windows for, there is no getting away from that simple fact either.
