anyone know what happened to Gfk?

he was a good man to have around when u needed to wind someone up.  Is he still active online? I recall rumours that he had an unhealthy habit that may have taken its toll.

I recall his feuds with "Guy Fawkes" as being quite humorous...

He's a member on here but hasn't posted much.

His main haunt until recently was SoCoder but he quit that forum over Jayenkai wanted to cut down on all the doom and gloom threads and try and make the forums more happy joy joy.

Not on here you won't :P - There are plenty of junk forums you can go on to wind people up, if that's your bag.

I heard a rumour about a rumour but that just turned out to be a rumour too. So I heard ;D

aww boo. The odd flame war is what gives anonymous forums the edge over open ID social media. If we wanted no aggro then might as well create a fb group.

I know, I'm a old boring fart!. I see this place as a hobby coders site for members to have a little fun and perhaps even learn something new. I'm all for a full on heated debate on any subject but when it comes to targeted personal wind ups and prodding members just to watch them react then that's just not me me, ergo, not for this site either.

Ahh, Gfk. Yes. The forum version of Victor Meldrew.

A very talented project finisher though. One thing you couldn't say about him was that he never stuck to his guns and never finished projects he started.

I think I was his favorite hatred though. :)

GFK was a bit arrogant but I liked him..
He was very sharp.. And short tempered..
I think he is a drummer as well.

I bet he found better things to do.. But who knows..

GuyFalwks had a missing Screw.. (hope he wont see that lol). He was chatting with me outside of this forums as well..

Hope to see Em again and get the party's on Again..  :))

I think some people either stopped developing, or moved to a better engines.. like Unreal..

In my case, The reason i don't deal with unreal atm is because I want an App that makes Easy Assets..

I would create such if I had the right founding :p

An indie programmer should not deal with graphics and stuff. its too much time consuming.

I was having some midnight multiplayer sessions with him and a Flanker(who created an UDP multiplayer lib for us), was great fun. 8)
He shot me down all the time, for I'm slow though. lol

He said he was autistic and some people who didn't take that into account kept pushing the wrong buttons, thinking he was just rude and an *sshole, but he just lacked certain social insight, no bad intent. If you understood that about him and gave some room to move he was a pretty ok guy imho and created a bit of stir sometimes hehehe. :))

I think I was his favorite hatred though. :)

He made everyone feel special like that. Interesting that a few of u are recalling his 'heated debates', even though blitzresearch were aiming for a zero aggro forum too. I bet if u weighed up the stats, u'd find the forums which include an ' ok, if u want to have an argument do it in here' board tend to do better. People are drawn to the mayhem.

Interesting..(talking about MIA's):
Yesterday I saw a Michael V.. (forgot the last name) showing up in LinkedIn - you know, the guy who did the Fastlibraries.

I sort of assumed  he had been made 'an offer he couldn't refuse' or so by the Ruskies to join in on their cyberwar division as he seemed to have vanished without a trace like so many other gifted Russian coders..

Could still be they're using his account to get foot hold in the world of course.  [paranoid]  :))

One MIA when the old forum went down is Mainsworthy.
I know he was active in the UK with the wargaming people. But it looks like all has gone quiet on that front too.
I do know that someone with the same name passed away at the end of last year - but I have no way to know if it was him or not.

I'm not sure how he could be called Victor Meldrew as he didn't just moan about any old shit, he just had strong opinions on things and didn't care about your feelings if there happened to be a debate.

As far as I am aware, aside from Matt Dickie, he wrote an absolute ton of games in Blitz. The second most successful programmer on the Blitz site.

Like most people, such as myself, he moved on and into Unity. I'm sure he's still making games, no idea what that is though, he did post a Unity question here a while back. That was the last time.

[edit] According to Unity forum profiles
GfK was last seen:

So, yeah, pretty sure he isn't dead.

Hello.  Lovely to be talked about.  Thanks to <you know who you are> for the heads-up on this.

No, I'm not dead.  Sorry to disappoint.

Amon: I love you, relatively speaking.  You're WAY down the so-called hate list.

Unhealthy habits: No idea what that's about.  Don't believe everything you're told.

So where did I go?  I went to just get on with things quietly, as I'll continue to do.  After receiving threatening emails from another forum member, which were handed to the police, I decided that other people aren't worth the bother.

I was also on Socoder for a bit.  But I got tired of reading about all the junk Jayenkai squanders his benefits money on.  And the endless obituaries.

Finally, thanks ENAY for being the voice of reason.

Goodbye.

Shame we couldn't get it to be more reliable.

Wonder why nobody aks for the bomb you dropped by telling someone (here) messaged you stuff you handed to the police - and what consequences (aside of "investigations stopped without results" or "investigations stopped for lacking interest") it had.

So ... I ask it now - feel free to stop your multiplayer sessions with "Rick" and "Flanker" to reply to me :-)

Yay. Way down on the hated list is good enough for me. :)

I'm happy you posted. I'm old now. Very old. Well, if you consider 40 old then yes I'm old. I'd be interested in seeing any projects you've done in Unity. I for one just can't get on with unity. I open the IDE and sit there looking at it, making the most amazing games in my head. 10 minutes later when I have to put the effort in I close the ide and call it a day.

Anyway, it's nice to know you're still around. :)

Lol, that's what I did on and off for a few years. The amount of spinning cubes I did before giving up was ridiculous. These days I know the bare basics to whip up a simple game like my Tank Mania game I did for a comp here. Still masses and masses to learn but I'm in no hurry.

Hahaa, yeah I'm no stranger to the spinning cube projects in Unity.

The worst part about Unity is every iteration of the dammned thing seems to introduce new features while deprecating others that were less than a month old, including syntax.
I have 830 items, 60% of them bought, from the unity asset store. Yesterday I went to see if any asset updates needed to be downloaded only to find that a third of them were no deprecated and not supported.
I just don't get how this can be allowed. Then again it's not the asset makers fault when unity release a new version that results in assets being deprecated due to code that is no longer supported in the new version. Pffff, it's just a waste of money.

I hate software that works in that way.  You try to learn the software, then oh everything's changed now - learn the new way of doing things!  WTF?!!   >:(

That's exactly how Unity is now. By the time you're sitting comfortabley with it, a new version come out forcing you to relearn it. You would think , "ok! I'll stick to the current version I'm used", but lo and behold you have to update because a bug in the version you use is only applied to the new version. Same goes for their supposed LTS versions.
I dunno. Fed up with Unity and how they go about business with version releases.

Yes, it was always going to be like that with Unity because they didn't design from a solid foundation IMO.

They rushed to write a 3D Engine and 2D was an after thought.  You would think they would have got some very efficient 2D going on with all the required features before jumping into 3D, but no.  So basically they're re-writing everything because the foundations weren't good - it's like building on sand.

Unity is going through a lot of changes. The Unity you may learn today won't be the Unity you will be using in a few years time. They are changing the whole coding side over to a much more efficient and faster system. Once the ECS and burst compiler system is fully matured who knows what they'll do with the current mono C# system.

It's impressive that they now have compiling from C# to assembler in the mix and in the long term this can only be a good thing. The down side is that any developer is constantly playing catchup. The tech in Unity is going through vast changes with programable render pipelines, visual tools for shaders and effects. They are brining in visual scripting, adding new physics API's and adding in new cloud, multiplayer and AR API's.

It's a constant change rather than building on solid tech that users have already spent ages learning. Some sides I agree with, like offering the HDRP for AAA stuff and the LDRP for mobile but some of the changes just smack that it wasn't thought out right to begin with.

I used to like Unity, still have it in use in some projects, but only old versions, due to nothing being backwards compatible and customers not paying for total rewrites due to engine changes.
Title: Re: anyone know what happened to Gfk?
Post by: Rick Nasher on March 23, 2019, 08:29:20 AM
Yep the changes are great and mad at the same time.

It looks great on site, but the amount of errors I went through when doing the always outdated tutorials, using C# some 2 years back *and* the horrible bug hunting under oop, on just very simple stuff, turned me off.
(probably my lack off skills but I know I'm not the only one hehehe)

If I look at their site now I only see C# being promoted as the language?

Stuff does change a lot in Unity but it's pretty much always for a greater good.  Anything that gets deprecated is usually left functional for ages before being completely removed, and it isn't hard to find what it's been deprecated in favour of.  so it's really up to you when you update your code.  In any case, at least Unity don't just bin the whole thing and start over every couple of years, unlike some engines I could mention.  Seriously, which is easier to adapt to?

Unity is awesome.  Anybody who disagrees, smells of wee and poo.

I'm tempted to delve into a slice of C sharp with the old unity, just for fun.... Although AGK also has some appeal.

This morning, I have been mainly reading this guide.....

Unity is a great platform for making games, no doubt about it. The problem is it’s image. Many think once you’ve learned a little bit about it you just whip up games in a few minutes using stuff from the asset store. “Oh a unity game.. so you just dragged and dropped to produce it!” - that’s the common myth. For some reason there’s a perception that unity can magic a game into life.

Personally I like a pure coding environment but it’s odd that I’m creating visual tools to aid in my game making, but that’s different to the unity approach, yes? :P

Unity will always have its hate group regardless of how fast and efficient it ends up as many folks just love to hate on popular stuff.

The free version has all the graphical features of the paid version. In a nutshell all it’s missing is reporting tools, additional network limits, dark mode and custom splash screens. That’s the missing basics in the free version.

Sounds good, and it seems to me Unity has got a fair old amount of evolution under its belt, about time to 'dive in', hell, it might encourage me to delve into the murky pond of being employed to code again, although I doubt it, been there got the t-shirt....  :P

OS: Windows 7 SP1+, 8, 10, 64-bit versions only;

First Athlon 64 was released in 2003... and in 2006 the intel mainstream Core 2 Duo was released. Means your computer is ... does it already have an USB slot? ;-)

I assume if you really only have a 32bit cpu in it I doubt that developing with Unity will be smooth.

Am sure you can buy a used 64bit computer for the price of ... 2 better bottles of wine, two boxes of beer ...  :-)

Sooner or later you will have to - and I am sure you will have to before 128bit computers get common.

Yep, you're right on the you can, and I will, however, I'm kinda on the why upgrade because you HAVE to brigade here.

I'd be interested to find out what actually goes past 32 bit addressing. I know most accept the status quo... And I know I'm grumpy old man esque, however the refs to 64 bit processors being introduced 16 years ago is not an argument for adopting the technology just because it came about before it was required. Is it still actually required.. or could 32 bit still cut the mustard other than you HAVE to go 64 bit?

Edit, yeah, I give in now, I nearly said I'm getting old.... Age is just a number and mine is closer to 48 bit than 64.......
