Title: ..point and click games..2D vs 3D ..

..so, do you have any particular opinion when we talk about point and click games, regarding rendering, 2D or 3D..which one appealing more to you or it doesnt really matter, long as graphics/animations/voiceovers are well done and story is good enough?? Any thoughts/preferences at all??

I prefer a hand drawn style. Cartoony 2d images. That is what i like for this genre.

A while back, I came across a point n click adventure engine.  The full version requires Unity, the demo version comes with a scaled down version of unity so you can try it without installing a bunch of other stuff.

Agreed, the tech should always follow the design. Whatever fits best for how you need it to look&feel.
The design ofcourse includes defining a target audience and taking the market situation into account, thus there may be a forced bias towards certain visual styles and tech approaches. 

Personally I prefer a well executed artistic approach, don't really care if 2D or 3D or how technically advanced it is.
Anyone can press some download buttons to get a technically advanced engine and a pile of somewhat realistic assets, but not many can create a game with a great artistic vision that sets the right mood for the story and is immersive throughout the game. A good approach to rise above the endless ocean of mediocrity on Steam and the App stores.

I would use https://www.visionaire-studio.net/?lang=en for a 2D adventure.


To bad, http://dead-code.org/home/ was never developed further. It supported 3D characters in 2D. But then, my friend Lee used Blitz3D for quite some of his adventure games.

I really like the old school Lucas Art adventure games such as Monkey Island 2 and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Monkey Island 3 graphics style was cool too. I wasnt keen on MI4 3D look, but the new Tell Tale 3D games are good so as long as the story is good 3D/2D doesnt really matter these days.

3d surpasses 2d if well implemented, Grim Fandango springs to mind. To take the discussion pre 2d to simply... Textualised adventures, some of those make your imagination do all the magic. 'You are in a dark room... There is an ominous foul reek and a foreboding sense of something approaching.' Then you remember you'd a madras last night washed down with some Stella.
