OMG THEY KILLED KENNY! THOSE BASTARDS KILLED KENNY!

I had my entry 90% completed as well. Now I'll have to start again....

Ok, so I had just started working on a screen transition, which isn't working right, and fuck all else. But that's not the point :-)

I'm in anyway - as for what, I have no idea.

Just don't get so caught up in the graphics that you forget you need to actually code a game around them as well. Not that this has happened to you before.... erm, erm.... Yes, focus, Steve :-)

Yeah, Steve, get on with it :))

So we have a free for all and I’ve no idea what to do, typical :P must decide tonight so I can dive in. Unity or AGK? Hmmm, do I dare do my own 3D models or hack away at 2D? Oh the choices. Should of set a theme ;D

New "Code a Game Competition" - perfect news !!
The theme "Go Nuts!". Tell me what options might correspond to such a topic? Maybe there are some examples of games?

I'm thinking 1988. Uno - Dos - Tres - Quatro... Overdrive

The names will be changed to protect the innocent... Thunderbirds are GO....

Adam being cryptic again. He'll soon spill the beans. He can't contain himself :)

Overdrive was that Team 17 driving game, as I recall. Had some great music but I don't recall the game being that good. Or maybe you just meant you are going into overdrive, perhaps?

Parallax could mean the brilliant C64 game from 1986 - or does he just mean he's going to have parallax scrolling in his game?

I was going to create a game called "Chunky wants a bun" and make it an innocent clone of Mr Wimpy. But everyone knows what that title actually really means so I probably couldn't get away with it...

So still only have the vaguest ideas of what I'm going to do but I have got some graphics together for a bit of prototyping:

I have a plan !

It involves platform elements (nothing too sinister as I hate frustrating games), shooting things, soldiers, helicopters, rescuing prisoners and saving the world from an ELE - extinction level event. Nothing too ambitious really.

Today I made player control system, scrolling test level and lots of screwing up trying to get the main char to jump correctly. I've never made a game involving platforms before so I'm allowed to screw it up a few times before getting it right :)

Still haven't got the screen transition working right either.

Can't commit just yet, still got my last compo entre' to finish.

Need to stew on it for a bit😁

Finally started on my entry. Very WIP this is - especially the game screen. No backgrounds yet , just collider blocks that won't be visible in play but I will use behind scenery so player can traverse ledges and the like.

Long way to go .....

I love early WIP shots as it's the start of your creation springing into life. The first moving sprite in your game is a personal favourite milestone of mine \o/ with the last few percent of a game being the worst and takes forever.

long way to go .....
Good to see you've started :) and I'm glad there is still a way to go as I've not settled on what to do yet :P

There was a list?  I thought we were allowed to use any pack from kenny.nl as long as it was only one pack.  I don't see any mention of a list.

Outline : Choose any free 2D or 3D asset pack from Kenney's Free game assets (https://kenney.nl/assets) and make a game.
The pack is on page 2 and called 1-Bit Pack.

Kinda moot now, though, since that contest is cancelled.

Turns out it's also the name of a famous porn actor but neither of them are anything to do with this game. There's also a C64 game called Joe Gunn that came out 11 years ago but that's just another coincidence.

The game is named after the Thompson submachine gun, nothing else. And I don't fancy changing it for a random coincidence.

Been working on the Cursor + Spline paths this evening.

Very pretty, so some game details?

Haven't really got a design fleshed out design yet. Going for a cut down 4x. Currently trying out some of the visual stuff. Aiming for a board game inspired experience, hence the small map and edged border.

Probably going to look at a few basic end game conditions, military (destroy other player's main city = win), or Science (reach top of of tech ladder) Economic (Build X number of cities), Cultural (Build a wonder).. once the end game condition has been met - Victory Points are used to determine the winner of the game.

Very nice jamesmin, very nice looking artwork. Is the map all your own work or part of a texture pack?

The map is from a Creative Commons collection of scanned historical artwork. I believe this one was from the 1600s.

..and I've also just gotten the fog system working. As you can see I have a cut a square out of the center of the map.

Fired up the old laptop to see jamesmin's most impressive cut scene graphics, well thats the only way I'll be motivated to say - I'm defo in. Can't reveal the genre of my game after all, generally speaking I shoot for the moon and sometimes miss (apart from 'The Big Dark Adventure', I'd so much gratification from hanging that mad old entry together).

So.... I need to realise my time constraints (40 ish hour week with a 500 mile commute on either side on occasion) - and get something out the door for Oktoberfest  ;D

Burger Time?  I love that game too, but I don't think I could beat the gameplay (it's perfect) plus I don't want to get sued lol.  I have some graphics (including animation) if you think you could produce something original then you can use my sprites.

Yeah, you gotta go with that one, man. It was a great game for its time and I'm sure it will be great to play the old classic again.

Noooo, would have made it impossible to play. Hopefully early next week if I have something decent to show then I’ll post a WIP screenshot or video depending on how smoothly things go :o

As simple as it is I definitely suck at the math side of puzzlers...crud :-[

@MediamanX try toning down the background (turn down saturation) and your block graphics will 'pop' more :)
Make the blocks bigger (from the third to 2 thirds) and give them some attitude to really shine \o/

I'll give it a shot,I'm stuck with a 640x480 screen res though the window can be scaled for blind moles like us 8)
Not much in terms screen real estate to be used so art based scaling is limited... darn it. :( but i'll take a jab it, most of the scrolling background will be covered by the "HUD"....given it's still early the entire thing may get a kawaii overhaul from my
niece.

Solid, The 6w x 9h grids a bit short noted columns grid was 6w x 13h,I have to keep in line with the meter
gimmick which clears 4 horizontal lines when used. that backgrounds spiffy I can dig it.
The HUD's just the boarder elements with space to throw all control inputs high score, current score in it I suppose.
one things for certain I need more gradient. Props to you adam for feed back, i'm always cool with it.  :)

Hahah that game looks cracking, mr MM. I'm doing the same kind of platform route but probably not to the detail you've got here with foreground and background scenery. Santa looks like he's fucking deranged, however. Too much of the old sherry, maybe?

I've got to rejig the big guy, though. I did a bit of scaling on him and some of it is off causing different heights in different animation phases. Can't leave it as is because it looks lazy at present.

I'll be using smaller sprites in the main game as once I have enemies in there I want to have quite a few of them running and jumping around probably. I didn't want to show any of the in-game stuff in that video as it's a background of just temporary collision objects at present so I can fine-tune the movement and scrolling. Player can fire, jump about, reach the helicopter etc, but there's no background or enemies, so kinda pointless showing that.

If you're going back to house music then this track from 1987 was probably one of the greatest. Certainly the only one I ever really remember.

or this absolute belter of a track, although I'm not sure it counts as house music as it's a bit before that all kicked off.

I have no idea what I'll do for this....I'm tempted to write something in blitz3d rather than a browser game...but my motivation to code a game right now is not high.

I get quiet time at home when the missus goes out or watches TV downstairs, which is the ideal time for me to continue working on something. Usually I'm unmotivated and want to just watch something on the media player, or play a game. Anything lacking in effort, as I like to surf the net and just chill out, rather than doing constructive stuff more than I really should. I find that as long as I can force myself to fire up the IDE and have a quick look at whatever I'm working on, the enthusiasm kicks in, and I start getting on with it.

It's hard work sometimes to kick yourself in the butt and get that far but deadlines help, which is why I'm more likely to get a game finished for a competition, instead of taking bloody years, like I did with Boulderdash.

You just got to sit in your chair, quit stuff like the web browser and email, and then get stuck in.

I have to confess: I do not like it. Looks "ugly/a mess" to me as it is a mix of "scaled pixels", vibrant candy colors, title font with gradient/color bar effect, pixel art ... and so on.
I assume some stuff is animated (eg the block area is surely rotating front back front back or so) but it looks a bit ... it contains too many different art styles.

So I hope you just want to fool us a bit by presenting some rough "previz/sketch out" :) ... you can do better - so do!

Depends on the res of the image, could do with a cuter title font/typeface though.
the title tilts while the blocks scroll. the only thing I want to be pixel art are the portraits ... makes sense.

Ah I know why It looks blurry now ... Dang it.
all the title screen elements are textures applied to sprites,blitz3d uses aliasing on textures by default.
due my G-card setting running texture quality to low everything comes off as extra blurry. fret not though
all I need to do is set a few texture flags, use cleartexturefiltering() and disable the aliasing  :D

love the main character - not a lot else.

You are meant to be playing a game - NOT the UI

see an example of what it 'could' look like:

Look to candy crush - the king of this sort of style. it is the top for a reason:
no UI
big and friendly
all the styles mix together perfectly

I know you are going to say "but my game is different because..."

the answer is: too different no one will like or play it - make it 'more' like (but different). make it a game and not a BIG ui with a tiny game at the side. If that means changing the game - THEN CHANGE IT! Dump how it plays and use a different method. if the play wants tiny graphics, then find a way to use it with big graphics :) you use 3 block together - why not 2? Dr Mario??

the title screen - I have no words. well a few.
background is all about voxels - is your game about voxels or features voxels?
is your game 2d or 3d or a well constructed mix of both?
It is attractive or a pig covered in makeup?

think quiet, but lively. calm but frenetic. It should be oooh yu, not eww gross...

starblock du pon??? ditch the du pon
syntaxbomb/gonuts/mx logo: get rid - you are cluttering up with cruft that will go out of date faster than lime green flares
dark background makes everything look like its been in a coal hole - do it nice, or dont do it :)
I counted 8 different fonts - you should have no more than 3

Again - look at candy crush - see how they do things, look at different studios take on candy crush - look at plants vs zombies

I'll give you a 45% with 60% for the concept. see if you can get your score to 80% :)

I'd like to see it moving before I make any judgements. I'm inclined to agree with Adam about the Du Pon bit. Unless it's a reference I'm not aware of to the actual game.

Can you pop a video up of that title screen so we can see what's changing. I think a static screenshot is doing it no favours.

As for those logo's, I've been a fan of doing the same and sticking them somewhere on the title screen but I think they don't fit there. Stick them in the credits somewhere, if you have a separate screen that shows them. They are no longer really going to be relevant when you put the game out there and the judging is done. You could always stick it back on the title screen if you win the competition perhaps.

I want to steer well clear of it looking like a mobile game if that makes any sense, making it look like one is easy. it's certainly not candy crush.
it's a columns style clone, if there are examples of games of that format I'll take look ... yet all results I searched for resemble something akin to this just with more empty space. ;)
Using a combination of 2d and 3d, getting the amalgam of such a complex aesthetic is most tenuous.
there's my challenge. From what I've seen king has yet to make a puzzle game with a "kawaii" aesthetic stylistically.
There all rather 'western' looking.

The game has a power meter gimmick, yep it's different,in a lot of cases differentiation have given
birth to some great games, even some of which venture far from the norm or obvious yet are of a similar genre. :)
Quote
I counted 8 different fonts - you should have no more than 3
Technically 4 fonts in total, but still I need to get the 'Hot tools' out for this one and limit the tones and size of them. :P
looking into title font logos, the fonts type faces for title logos tend to stand by there own accord and how many are used barely matters, they just follow an overall theme with most titles using 2 to 3 alone.

All & all very interesting, there's still plenty of time I suppose,Dare I go pastel? Hmmmm.  :-\

Greetings,

So I've started working on a game - a match 3 game, with a side game that is part of it - it's a little different from most match 3 games I've seen (which isn't many)....

A question I have though is whether or not I should just go ahead and buy some sprites / graphics which will indeed make it look much, much better or if I should do my own graphics.

Currently it is merely coloured boxes.....ie drawrect commands.

Artificial stuff...like gems, blobs, jellies.... Could be done by you in a computer gfx programme. But if your side twist thing requires backkdrops, huge characters etc ... This will require assets done...uhm... Better.
You could still create assets...as previz/rough idea so that your artist knows what you imagine.

Or checkout what others offer on finished assets (cheaper) and design around it...ennsure it offers all or even more assets than you need, else you end up with the need to extend. This can be hard to achieve thrn.

lol yes it's alive, it's good when you first get things moving about and animating.

When you're dashing from dark square to dark square the quick move lends itself to the fast ship 'echo'.  I'm pleased with how that turned out.

I've been prototyping ideas over the weekend.

Thought about doing a Thrust style neon vector game but with a morphing ship you could change in different situations like wider and thinner to get through small vertical gaps etc.. The thought of building a level editor put me off. Too much work for the 5 weeks we have left.

Tried out a turn based idea similar to Wasteland Warriors (failed comp entry) but more of a grid like movement similar to the squared paper game vector race where you retain momentum from the previous turn so have to think ahead. The concept was more about survival than racing or killing things.  Got the basic movement working with options to use handbrake, nitro or 180 spin all of which changed future moves.  It wasn't particularly fun as there was no Ai so difficult to know if it had legs. I had too many ideas also which weren't doable in 5 weeks so binned it (for now).

The game needed to be small with quick to make assets.

I liked the endless survival concept and I love post apocalyptic stuff like Madmax and also Running Man and like driving games.  Its a game show where contestants drive around a stadium/arena in a rusty old pickup, chased by stalkers, topping up gas as you go.  The longer you last the more money you leave to the family.

I'm sticking with my tried and tested lo-fi graphical style (sorry to disappoint Derron ).

First screenshot ..

I think blink used that name for his 3d remake of Van Tourismo. I did consider finishing the trilogy but that ain't no Van, its a Pickup! Might make one of the stalkers drive a Van for old times sake though.  ;D

Well that's your aesthetic for games, so why not explore it for a while?   :)

Exactly! ;D I really do enjoy trying to get as much detail as I can per pixel.  I follow a pro dev Orange Pixel who did Spacegrunts and many other cool games. Alll his games have the same aesthetic so I figured why not me. I am mixing it up a little as the vehicles will roll and pitch when turning, accelerating and braking and the terrain will impact traction.

Yes, have fun with it!  ;D  Plus you get to optimize your engine over time, the latest version of Gunstar is noticably smoother than previous versions, no matter how many ships and particles are on-screen.

As we seem to be sharing then here is a basic WIP of some animations. Been slow going so far but hope I'll get more time now to get on with it ??? - Not quite sure how it's going to pan out but we'll see how it goes.

Cheating? :o you know how much work it took to get this right? :'( :)) - no more cheating than those who download sound effects and free music which takes no effort at all *slap*  ;D

Some of the animations ( not all shown ) were done by exporting a base model from Daz3D, importing into Mixamo, choosing and animation, saving to FBX, importing into Daz3D, baking the animation keys, exporting the animation and then applying it to your clothed character  8)

Damn! You guessed what I’m doing  :))

When I post the next video then it should be obvious what arcade game it’ll be inspired by. Might end up being a mix of that and a classic 8-bit platformer but I’m not sure if that’ll work nicely together.

Finally getting somewhere with the animations. It’s been a big slog getting them to blend with each other, like running to running jump, high kick to low kick. Definitely a lot more work than I thought it would be but good to see it taking shape.

Moot point really as they don't import into AGK. Not sure why if they are exported from Mixamo

The models aren't from Maximo, just the bone animations from a base model. All the clothing of the characters is then done in Daz3D and the rendering done in there. The reason AGK is no good here is that each bit of clothing, the face, eyes, hair, skin etc could be a texture map of 2500x2500 up to 5000x5000 and AGK isn't great at handling this ridiculous OTT textures for such a small character, lol. But I know Daz3D enough to potter around with this sort of stuff over other 3D apps.

Nothing much been happening on the game front - lots of other stuff like work to do.

But here goes:

i'm attempting to create different user defined maps that come into view. You can see two maps above a complete one and a debug one.

The maps are then referenced (visually from the map app) where other stuff like what enemies to show, etc will also be defined:
You can see above the 10 map zones being referenced with the actual maps on the far right as layers

Once it is all working it should mean making the levels becomes very streamlined :)

I’ve had to ditch the idea of fluid 2D animation as doing the transitions between A to B has too many variations to spend the time on doing it all properly. Instead I’ll opt for the classic few frames 2D animation and let the brain fill in the blanks ;D

Grumble. I just set up a GMLive system on my dev environment which will let me change map objects and variables in events while the game is actually running without needing to recompile. The same kind of thing Unity has had for a while now. I've got it working for simple stuff like changing variables in objects so I can adjust a jump height, for example, and test it instantly. However, I primarily wanted it for creating the game levels, as I would be able to move around the map and adjust any blocks that prevent progress, and make more interesting traps sooooo much quicker.

Needless to say I've put half the weekend into setting this all up and I still can't get it working. Docs for the system are pretty poor too, considering the extension cost £30.

Other than that, I'm probably doing ok time-wise. Level creation is going to be the slow part and the list of stuff to do seems as daunting as ever. Blinkok has just shown me another set of background graphics that I'm going to have to use, as they look so cool, as well. Probably for Qube's hidden Syntax Bomb lair.

Well it was a good strategy, which would have saved you a lot of time.  A shame the technical side of the chosen engine kinda let you down...I've been fighting with AGK recently, with things not working as expected, so I fully understand.

I tend to write my own code for everything so I can take it to another engine if required - rather than relying on the built-in stuff.  The only downside it takes longer to produce.

Everyone has different monitor capabilities, so there is a question.
What's the best screen resolution to do?

x=1024  y=600
x=1024  y=768
x=1280 y=720
x=1920  y=1080

Everyone has different monitor capabilities

work out what your minimum resolution you want to support is and work from there.

I'm currently working with 800x1024. but I want a vertical oldschool look

I tend to use 1080p (1920 X 1080) which is common/scales well on modern systems.  Using AGK's Virtual Resolution to automatically scale, and add bars too if a clean scale ratio cannot be achieved.

i'll need to upload my comp entry now due to being busy in the up and coming weeks ... damn it.  >:(

Why?  You might get some unexpected free time to tweak your game, and it doesn't take long to upload a program.

I WILL have an entre' .... maybe.  T-minus 9 days - thats like more than 100 hours!

Yep if you have time to go all in on a project, go for it!

If only, i'm currently out of town without my dev setup, I should have transferred it to my gpd-win all in one ... double dang it.
shame I left that behind to ... triple dang it.

More likely Thursday for me /shudder. I make it 8 milestones left to sort out now I've gone through my list and hacked out anything that I can't realistically get done.

On the bright side, all the comic pages the blinkok has done have all been converted into frames which pop up on the screen individually now, which makes them look far more effective than just fading in and out. Took some time to get that working. Done some work to ensure the information like using controllers, going full screen and other keys are displayed now as I know people like Derron don't like this stuff being revealed :)

Tube station level is now fully working with trains and layout. I just need to get the enemies up and running there and I think there's going to be a few drones chasing the player as well. This is the third level in the game and I switched it up to make it kind of like a right-to-left runner instead of another platform scene just to mix it up a bit.

Still not sure what to do with big-bad-qube though. The game now lets you get up to his location at the end of level 4 but I'm not sure about killing him off or just having him doing time for his crimes. Or if I can get some kind of boss fight in there or just have him blown away. Decisions, decisions.

Wow, that all sounds great - people really going for it this comp.  I'll be happy to just complete on time.

One thing is certain though...You cannot kill Qube (we'd have no website ;) ).  He'll escape like a lot of bad guys do in films - to fight another day, and a sequel.

Forgot I've already got the bugger in a jail cell frame when player wins the game so he's going to have to live. Not that we can't be a bit nasty to him first - just no fatality move :-)

You know you can clone evil and nasty Qube villains out of a simple booger - or a hair out of his ear!

so a sequel is always possible ... "Tommy Gunn reloaded [pun intended]".

A sequel is a cool idea providing I get the original done first :-)

Yeah, you forget how grim it is leading up to the deadline. I haven't really had time in the last week to add everything I would have liked so a feature cull will be carried out over the weekend. I have got most music and fx in and you can play a game from start to finish but lots still to be done  :o

Are you back in Steve? You'll have plenty of time to get your decorating done in the weeks and months to come  :P

I still think I can get done in time now I don't have to go away this weekend. I'm confident of this until I look at the old to-do list and start biting my fingernails again. I've culled a load already to give me a chance to get it done so I might have to revisit after the competition is over and put some more time into the game to release it completely how I planned it.

Here is my entry for the Go Nuts Competition.

Candy Pop
Download for PC and Mac here: https://conceptalpha.itch.io/candypop

Brief: Its a simple puzzle game that I have probably spent far too much Time playing  ;D
You have to clear the board of Candies. Clicking on the candies makes them grow larger until they pop!
The juice from the popping candy makes adjacent candies expand. Create Pop chains for massive score and multiplier boosts!

Hope you all enjoy!

Regards Tommy Gun.  Looks great and plays well.   8)  That jump sound is very annoying though and there seems to be a collision bug sometimes on platforms, I was levitating until shot.  Turning off the mouse pointer when going fullscreen would be better.

Yeah, that does look a bit odd. I've just got used to seeing that so didn't think to put a bit more tinkering in to fix it better. Because my player image animation is all the same size frames but the sprite is positioned at different areas within it to give it that bobbing up and down look. I tried to jig around with that when I first wrote the player control and ended up with all sorts of collision issues where he'd get stuck in the platforms as a frame moved some pixels into the floor as the collision boundaries got merged. I was using a system to move the char as close as he could get to a collision object based on how many pixels he moved in that frame and then using a loop to move him by one pixel in that direction afterwards to get him literally next to it, before doing the next frame. I had to scrap that and eventually just put a collision area around the whole image area to keep the movement looking how it's intended in the end, which is how he can hang off an edge like that, if carefully positioned.

As it technically could be called a bug then I'll take another look at getting that tighter during the bug fix week as it affects him not falling into the pit traps very easily in the Jungle level as well.

Someone's already told me they tried to play the game in pacifist mode and arrest Qube without firing a single shot and managed it. Scandalous. I suspect the game is a bit easy but I don't think I want it that easy. Not sure that counts as a bug, however :-)

Anyone else completed it and seen the end game screens yet?

Stevie G mentioned a few things he had to cut to get his game done. I had the same issue.

Grenades.
Buzzsaw traps.
Collapsing platforms.
Poison gas.
Mines.
Tanks that aren't decoration and actually fired at you.
Lava and water pits working properly.
I even wanted quicksand and rake traps, where you stood on the base and a bar comes up with nails in. Sadistic bugger that I am.

Still, I got the spike traps stabbing Tommy in the knackers and the electrocution in, so it's not all bad :)

Congrats to all those who’ve managed to complete their games. Looks like a top notch outing this time around.

I’ll get a list done tomorrow for all the games so it’s easier to download them all.

There are a couple of games grabbing my attention at the moment, with some other very impressive entries too.  Everybody seems to be uploading new versions, so that could effect my voting on deadline.  Every game I've tried is far from broken, so minimal bugs with a real bit of polish.  Good work guys!

@Derron.  You said earlier you believed my sales qty would be in your child's counting range.

Well.  You were right.

I have not even come close to earning the minimum to be paid at the end of the month.

I've had more reviews by Steam Curators than actual sales.

In fact launch day saw a whopping total of 4 sales.

I'm okay with it though.  It could be worse.

OK ... to think positive: after a launch you can always have sales "from then on" (there is no monthly fee to keep the entry active ... not for now :D).

So maybe create better games the next time ... which sell better but also "advertise" indirectly what other products you offer. Nonetheless here I have to state this: once your games look better, play better, sound better ... and are well "received" by the users, you might want to get rid of your "beginner games" as they taint your show reel.

We all know how fast you can create "complete" games ...  use your efficiency ... but trust others (here: us) when we say something needs to be changed. Limit "gameplay variance" so you have something which you can "matty complete" in time - in so few time that you can improve and improve and improve ("polish") it for the rest of the time (75% of total project time - in your case). Keep it a bit more small and less "ambitious", learn your new language toy, improve skills ... and again: try to use your drawing skills for something else than the "final assets" (or learn how to do concept art, fine drawing, ... and _really_ improve your asset creation skills by some steps). There is a reason that many "simple" games are not using too much assets (costly, time consuming, ...).

Nonetheless: good luck with the sales - maybe do a "free for a month" thing somewhen if you want to see more downloads.

And as Adam wrote: what did the reviews write/say?

bye
Ron

Thanks.  Good points.

At Adam and Derron re the reviews:

5 Highly Positive (recommended) 2 negative (not recommended)

The 2 negative suggest it's a good idea but lacks in some key areas (ui mainly)

The 5 highly positive suggest various things they like (runs on low spec device, creativity possible, entertaining generally, retro)

And as said, that's more reviews than sales.....haha.
