I thought this is really cool:

He teaches how you can set up a layer stack on Photoshop that lets you use digital painting to create pixel art-like graphics. With this you can make textures, sprites, backgrounds/illustrations etc. 
The layer stack is set up in a way that composites your high-resolution brush work into antialiased pixel art.

I see what you mean, those guys go back and forth between them.

They're using the Gradient Map adjustment layer on Photoshop, but I think the Color Lookup adjustment (which lets you load .CUBE color LUT files) might work better for this. 
I'm thinking, creating a .CUBE LUT procedurally with code, like Python, Javascript, anything simple. If you have any ideas, let me hear. 

EDIT: Ah, got it, at the end he mentions this trick: you're supposed to duplicate your color layers and put that copy at the top, with Color blend mode, so it restores the colors that were lost in the process.
