Title: Go Nuts Competition Entry - The Running Van
Post by: STEVIE G on September 11, 2020, 17:59:28
The running man but with cars. Collect cash every 5 seconds you survive,  keep fuel topped up,  pickup loot and get big bonuses for taking down a stalker. The more you make, the easier your family will have it when your pan-breed [how about Van Breed for a title  :))]

I might add some powerups that float in like the sponsor capsules in Hunger Games. No weapons though.

I decided to create all the stalkers based on the Vanarchy van so I need a Van related title to complete the trilogy. Ideas welcome?

All the vehicles will roll and pitch when driving and I might add in some jumps if I can figure out how best to do it with the chasing AI.
There will be big rocks and stone structures to impede you and different handling on different terrain (Road, mud, water and salt plane).

Also, went with a black outline this time for a more cartoony look.  Some of the stalkers and some loot/obstacles below. Special bonus to those who can name the objects!  ;D

I'm not sure about the black outlines...Maybe a dark grey to make it a bit more subtle?

Think you've actually really got a title already, Steve. It's a game based on "The Running Man"

"The Running Van" might work ;)

I don't get the pan-breed comment, though. Am I missing something?

Staring me right in the face! Pan-breed is a type of bread and also a slang term for dead or deed as we call it in Scotland.  :D

Get that rift from the main theme into any music you put into the game - the 5 note and 9 note sections. Anyone who's seen the film will dig that.

As for the game, how about some ground hazards such as mines and quicksand. Also those beacons from the film where your head, or roof in this case, get blown off?

I wanted to complete the trilogy so kind of. In terms of the name, technically the Vans are chasing you and your driving a Pickup but hey-ho  ;D

Built a Stadium and some obstacles for the arena, some new, some stolen and refactored from Gunstar.  :D

I should be able to balance some of the stones ontop of each other for more variety in rock formations.

Still not sure about how I'll do ramps, mainly how to show a vehicle on top and possibly some behind or in front, and only being able to enter it from one direction. May or May not make it in. Piss easy in 3d but in 2d quite tricky.

Might need to redesign the trees, not 100% happy with them.

Added a wee turd with flies buzzing around -  a powerdown borrowed from Polymaniacs  ;D

It's amazing how you get the shapes to read so well at low resolutions.
I would say that stuff that isn't a vehicle have a less visible outline

Working on basic background rock formations. More detail required but OK start. The Stalkers now give chase.

Height map is now in, a little bit of gravity as you drop down a level and a bit of a hop as you move up so kinda bounces subtlety as you drive.

Added a bit of texture to the sandstones and some more variation. Texture was added by subdivision of the mesh x 2 and slightly offsetting the colour of each tri. Had to create my own cylinder primitive as native on wasnt up to scratch.

I've settled on this setup in terms of outlines - think it looks best.

Who on earth put that up there?!  :D

One thing on the outlines. If you remove the outline where an object contacts the ground it tends to make is "stick" to the background rather than float above it.

I get you but these outlines are automatically generated so I'm not manually editing. Basically, for each mesh there are 3 versions/passes. One of them creates the main mesh, the next the shadow and then the outline. They are saved separately as different bitmaps. For the outline the mesh is coloured full white and surrounding pixels make up the outline (obviously) and then original image is removed.  This is a 2d pixel operation so the best I can do without manual editing is limit the outlines to be ignored below a certain y point, roughly midway which is the ground. The outlines are multiply blended sprites like the shadows.  I did use this half way method in previous screenshots but will try again and see how it looks and post a shot tomorrow.

I genuinely embrace constructive criticism  so appreciate everyone's comments.    :D

That is quite a process. Almost as crazy as my pipeline but the results speak for themselves. I can appreciate trade-offs and clearly there is one here. I don't think it's that big a deal.

EDIT: I just noticed that (almost) where the shadow intersects with the outline is where it should be removed

Sure but I have ocd when it comes to look. I'll need to have 2 different versions of each rock, one with full outline if not touching the ground and one with outline without a bottom when touching the ground. I'll try it tomorrow  ;)

EDIT: I can definitely wipe out any outline for the lower blocks if they are where the shadow would be. Still need full outline for higher blocks.

Regarding outlines - did you try the NPR render stuff in Blender? ("cartoon rendering") ? That way you
- automate outline creation
- could (if desired) already render out the sprite with the outline on top of it
- create a maybe slightly different look (not full outlines but similar to "drawn outlines")

I estimate approx 4000 individual sprites will be created for this game, each with a separate main, shadow and outline so the pipeline Im using is the fastest. It takes approx 2 min to render the 1000 I have at the moment.

Last attempt. I created 2 versions of obstacle objects. One version has full outline for objects above the ground, the other has the outline partially removed.  To do the later I created a separate shadow mesh with no x offset and ignored outlines which touched this. I think it works.

First shot is darker to show lines better.

This shot is in game. The object placement is currently random hence not exactly the same scene.

Lastest update- added animated crowd (just jumping up and down), added small rocks, a Vulture (Gunstar Duck with black wings and white collar) and a Chopper stalker. Traction is now impacted depending on terrain and all collisions working. Also added some dusk lighting - see below.

Next up is AI for stalkers and general gameplay which could make or break things if not fun.  The general idea is v simple where fuel=life so you lose a bit constantly due to leaky tank and general driving, collisons lose you some and when you run out you're toast.

What's that? You'd like another reminder about some famous vans. Well, why didn't you just say :)

A-Team van - a no-brainer that one.

Dumb and Dumber

An ice cream van - not famous from any particular film but you gotta have one, right? Bonus if you use the sound sample "ICE SCREAM" from speedball 2.

Jurassic Park

Kill Bill

Lost - the tv show. Well, I remember it.

Scooby Doo, of course.

Aye, thats the one, facing the crowd in that shot.  ;D Not sure I can avoid the odd phallus I'm afraid as it's totally random. A 3 piece statue might work though, legs, torsos and head. One for the todo.

Toying with idea of adding a Killion style host, similar to characters in Gunstar.

Agreed.  It takes a certain skill and is not easy.  Very cool...I'm not producing 3D Graphics like Stevie but going straight to 2D.  But on the flip side, personally for me  it's quite gratifying to make tiny pixel changes and then think, Ah!  That looks so much better, and I've only changed 4 pixels!!  Great fun.  :))

Thought I'd get the menus out of the way so that I can concentrate on the gameplay in the last few weeks. The title screen is fully animated. Apologies if anyone is offended by my depiction of the running babes, it is meant to be an 80s style gameshow  ;D

The Running Van title and other refinements required but will revisit if time allows.

He he, love the "80s style gameshow" title screen. Do you hand draw every frame or are they originally in 3D?

Brilliant unique style you've developed there. I'm loving the slightly Marvin-esque look they have

Stevie once wrote he models stuff in 3d...and renders it out. I assume this is done here too.
Saves a lot of time... especially when animating ;-)

Color choice in the image is ...mean ;-) some of the girls have tinted nipples and wesr a choker ;-)

Draw every frame - not a chance!? As Derron says, full scene is a 3d mesh, I just animate for 64 frames and spit out as bitmaps.

Its amazing what a couple of half spheres can accomplish. Cheese is key.

Heres the start screen. I want Trillion (aka Killion) to show up in game too to announce Stalkers or hazard activation. The arenas will be random with random hazzard placement but if you find one you like you can play it again using the 'Old Arena' button.

My post keeps failing in the competition thread so I'll try here. Your download link isn't working for the game, Steve.

See screenshot - which I can't post as that's what's making the post not go up, for some reason.

Works fine here. No errors.

Can you see the screenshots in my post above? I can't see any of my screenshots on this thread, really weird as I know the img urls are there. I'll see if I can fix the link tomorrow.

Try this

Go to : https://stevieg.itch.io/the-running-van?secret=YU1YQB0dHf9EGhVbNFQkX3fIY
Then amend the URL to https://stevieg.itch.io/the-running-van/purchase?secret=YU1YQB0dHf9EGhVbNFQkX3fIY

Worked for me :)

For some reason I had it on free+donate, I changed to free so original url should work. Still can't get any images to show up!

Your images are "http", not "https" ... maybe Qube disallowed insecure content ... ?
Directly calling your ***.plus.com*.png urls shows the images.

Edit: Download works now - after Stevies changes.

New version 1.01 up, same link. Includes minor bug fixes to random backgrounds on menu animations, random alpha artifacts on particles and AI timing issue for specials and intros.

See options  :D

Should be an options.ini in data folder. Change the fullscreen to 0 or 2.
