SyntaxBomb is launching a code a game competition where the winner, voted by the community wins £200 GBP.
The boring rules :
1.. Must be all your own ( or teams ) work. I.E. no copyright media or pre-built game template.
2.. Provide a Zip download with at least a Windows exe. You can include other OS's too if you want.
3.. Source code is optional but preferable ( £50 GBP extra to those who provide full source code ).
4.. Choice of language is totally up to you.
5.. All entries must be in by July 31st 2017 @ 23:59:59 BST.
6.. Prize to the winner payable via PayPal only.
The game theme :
Asteroids...
We want to see your best super snazzy modern day take on this good old classic. Simple ;D
No one interested in this little comp? :(
I think it's a good idea.
Personally, I'm scrambling to get another project out the door, so I doubt I can participate. But if inspiration strikes in the next few weeks I'll put something together.
Maybe no one has commented they're holding their card close. :P

Shhhhh, we're working. :D
It is a great idea. I might join.
Brilliant idea - promoting innovation and gaming stuff, I'm also very tempted ;D
Oh it's a fantastic idea, I'm inbetween coding systems at the moment, so not sure I can make the deadline - plus I'm on holiday soon. Just keep it open until there are several entries.
I would have be keen.
The problem is that I have just purchased Game Maker 2 studio and to get to grips with any language, I always write a Boulderdash clone. I just find writing Asteroid clones, pretty boring. :(
The brief wasn't a clone, but a 'super snazzy modern day take on this good old classic'.
Besides, people producing games and winning cash seems like a good way of getting momentum with this site, and inspiring others, rather than whining about the chosen game.
okay, point taken, Mate...i'm out. Good luck with your snazzy take on a classic.
Lol ;)
I wrote a game called asteroid dodge, its on gamejolt (some reason I cannot paste the link in this text box (win 10 phone))
I had it on the google play store and I received a c&D from atari telling me to take it down as I used the word "asteroid" in the name!!! :D
Divvy's
Dabz
Think I should go over the code for the Asteroid game I knocked up a few years back.
@Dabz: Sounds like it was one of those automated bots that sends out emails that big companies use to scans for keywords to any IP they own. Last time I checked Atari didn't release a game called Asteroid and a good solicitor that deals with such things would have blown them out of the water over it. Reminds me of when Apple decided to take an Mexican telecommunication company to court for using the name iFone for them only to get egg on their face when it turned out that the telecommunications company had registered the name a few year before any had heard of the Apple iPhone. I'm actually surprised that Oracle haven't taken Apple to court over the use of the name iPhone. I'm sure that the eyePhone IP from VPL Research would have been transferred over when Oracle bought Sun Micro Systems (who acquired VPL Research).
I'm sure people won't use the name Asteroids anywhere in the title, and so much of an update it's not an obvious clone - a modern take as Qube puts it.
I have some ideas for this, but I can't see me getting any time until after my holidays.
A suggestion, perhaps leave the competition open without deadlines - just when there are (maybe) 10 entries?

That could take forever, or? I am more for a deadline.
Well £250 is a good incentive I think. And do remember SB has been up for 5 minutes lol ;)
ok I have an idea and have started on the graphics :D
I like the general idea but I don't like having to post an exe..happy to post source....I find my web host and email doesn't like exes no matter what I try to load them as....so I'd rather- if I entered - to just post source and media or perhaps media in the source or do it as a web browser game or as an Android app (most source provided)...

The idea of including a Windows exe is as if you post X language code and others don't have X language to compile in then they won't be able to play it, which is super sad :(
What I can do is add an FTP account so users who have these issues can upload a zip file if that helps?. If that would be of use then PM or email me and I'll send you the FTP details. Or I could create an exe with your entry and link to it. I'm flexible ya see :)
So the theme is 'Asteroids'.....how loose is that theme?
Does it mean the music/sfx should also be self-made?
Not that I have anything to present, but what if I write a game and win the prize - I am wondering will I still be able to publish the game - sell from my website or publish on steam, for example?
QuoteSo the theme is 'Asteroids'.....how loose is that theme?
So long as it's recognised as an "Asteroids" type game then that is all cool with me. Asteroids, as in ship vs asteroids. However you work that it's up to you.
QuoteDoes it mean the music/sfx should also be self-made?
Coding wise should be all your own / teams doing ( frameworks and plugins are allowed, like Pyro and TimelineFX, but not modified complete game templates ). Media wise you can do your own work or use public domain / purchased goodies.

SyntaxBomb has absolutely no rights to any work posted here. You can happily post your game, win the prize and then go on to make millions from it without a peep from here beyond tip top praise.

That's very rigid, and Atari are known for asking for games to be taken down. :-X
QuoteThat's very rigid, and Atari are known for asking for games to be taken down. :-X
They are strict on direct clones of asteroids but you can not claim copyright on a ship firing on asteroids.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_clone
QuoteIn 1982, Atari brought a lawsuit against Amusement World, claiming that the arcade game Meteos violated Atari's copyright on Asteroids. Though the court identified twenty-two similarities in the game mechanics, it ruled against Atari citing these elements as scènes à faire for games about shooting at asteroids.
Okay, this might inspire some others, I thought - I'll go Monkey X for this competition, then quickly realised struggling with syntax that would manage to scale an image - asteroods from native code might be a bit of a stretch in 5 weeks due to my rusty ness with Monkey X.
So... back to my old haunt of B3D, found some pointy rocket stuff, yeah I'm sure y'all from B3D land recognise the rockets within the image above, so I might need to crack open blender to render my own rockets to aim at the incoming asteroods. Point is - I've got a starting point... My zany take on asteroods. Will it be a winner? At a stretch, the big question is can I finish it in time what with possibly starting a new job in that timeframe? Exciting stuff.
I'm just growing some graphics within a 3D conway life simulation thing I put together a while ago - well it should ensure the textures are original as well as the code ;)

For my take on this I'm going for a full HD 2D version with rendered graphics. 1920 x 1080 at 60fps but the asteroids are only 30fps or else I'd end up with super silly texture sizes which would explode my iMac.
So far I have the basics of the asteroids moving and rotating etc + the ship movement is fully in.
Still a lot to do but this is an early ( alpha ) look on how it's shaping up. I don't get much time to spend on things like this but I think I can complete it before the end of July :)
Next I'll add the ship firing and explosions effects then take a break and finally get some time to whip up a super cheesy theme tune with the East West Hollywood Orchestra library that I've had a whopping 10 minutes to play with so far.
Early screen shot ( resized down - background image by Fiona Fedler and public domain as far as I am aware ) :

So, am I reading this right? I'm allowed to use the BlitzMax Ignition framework?
Does it have to be a spaceship versus asteroids, or can I make an asteroids style game using a different setting/player/enemies?

My question too. I have something else in mind.
Here's (https://www.dropbox.com/s/x8j6rahffotd5pr/asteroidfield.zip?dl=0) a game that I knocked up with MonkeyX v0.66 six years ago with an asteroid theme.
You will find that there is an HTML5, Flash, OS X, Windows and Linux version in the zip file.
NOTE: To get the Linux version running you will need to set the execute and group permissions. Zip files do not preserve them.

Yes, frameworks like Ignition, Pyro, Diddy etc are allowed.

That's fine so long as it falls into an "asteroids style game".

I'm hoping that as long as it has the following then it'll qualify for votes:
1. Asteroids causing mild peril.
2. An ability to explode asteroids before causing death and stuff. :-\

Thanks. It's being coded in AGK2 :)
I really need to look at AGK I picked it on steam for about £10 on a 90% off on a flash sale and just never looked at it.
Just had a spark and a great idea emerged - will try to dedicate this weekend to it, bear in mind now - the prize is mine!
t-minus 12 days.... thanks for inspiring me to dust off my IDeal IDE with blitz3D - asteroids game logic always intrigued me, more so than space invaders for obvious reasons.
Good Luck all 8)

I'd like to be in on this one too :-)
I have the main game all working now. I started Monday evening just to see if/how far I would get and it turns out that it's all coming together waaay faster than I thought :D
I went for the old retro look but with a modern twist to it on the grounds that I'm crap at artwork and it's my first game that I've ever written to completion! Kudos to Qube for the incentive - I'm loving it!!.
Anyway I concentrated on the gameplay *cough cough* , or I should say playability :P
I'm still adding some touches to the game, so it's not quite ready for consumption just yet. When it comes to submission, where's the best place to upload an .exe? or I could share the source via GitHub if it's easier?

Depending on how large the file is you should be able to attach it to a post.
Although the last time I checked I couldn't find a size limit.
I've probably bitten of more than I can chew, struggling to synchronise the thrust vector with the actual direction of the players craft, I'm sure it'll come together though....
QuoteWhen it comes to submission, where's the best place to upload an .exe? or I could share the source via GitHub if it's easier?
I think the PHP POST size is 8MB maximum ( I think that's what it is set to ).
If you do have issues hosting anywhere else ( GitHub, GoogleDrive etc ) then if you want I can provide an FTP link for you to upload to here directly ( no size limit ).
Quotestruggling to synchronise the thrust vector with the actual direction of the players craft
Sin and Cos are your friends here, they'll give you a unit direction vector for x and y that you multiply by the same amount of thrust. Didn't you post some code already? maybe it was someone else? :P
@Qube
Ahh cool. The exe is about 1.8mb at the mo, all assets are made in code so far. I'm hoping to do the same for the sound effects.
I posted an example in the code archives for anyone having trouble with getting the ship to fly right. My example doesn't have any asteroids to get in the way, but I did add a singularity with gravity (similar to Space Wars). Example here http://www.syntaxbomb.com/index.php/topic,3282.0.html (http://www.syntaxbomb.com/index.php/topic,3282.0.html)

https://www.syntaxbomb.com/index.php/topic,3279.0.html (https://www.syntaxbomb.com/index.php/topic,3279.0.html)
@col, yeah I posted some code for 2D stuff, however, I'mopting for a madly optimistic goal of a 3D asteroids thingy - have got my 3d 'cone' traversing above the landscape with the incoming placeholder asteroids (I'm using borg style cubes grown from my own conways game of life thing at the mo, which successfully crash land into the planet below....)
Thing is, for all the 'cone' now spins left and right in synch with the key presses, its got a disconnect with the physics.
I've used JV-ODE in the past, which was great fun - but my coding is limited these days, as you all know, time flies by ever faster as you age. Still luvin b3D ;)
@3DzForMe - Oo er, sounds interesting :D I look forward to seeing your entry :)
My entry has changed somewhat from the YouTube video I posted recently. I've changed over to 3D models with higher resolution, normal maps and shadows. It's a subtle change but I like it. It's going to be a tight squeeze to get it finished in time with the amount of free time I have but I'm hopeful it'll all fall into place. Ack, screw real life, get the fun coding stuff done :P

The shading becomes much more apparent as the bullet / cannon ball grows in size. Angeroids for the 22nd century ;)
Well, overcame a major hurdle this morning, my bullets were more like sticky bombs to the place holder asteroids - that failed to go off. Took a little head scratching, but the asteroids are being obliterated now. The game might not be pretty - but I never thought I'd an asteroids game in me, cheers Qube for the challenge. 8)

I've added a try/catch which *should* popup a window if a 'throw' occurs in the game.
The usual culprit is not having DirectX11 installed :P
You can safely have it installed even if you have Dx12 already - it doesn't overwrite newer versions and all can be safely installed side by side.
If you can could make sure there is a d3dcompiler_47.dll and/or d3dcompiler_43.dll in your windows/system32.

Rooster, I've created a Linux version just for you :D - Updated info in the Showcase post http://www.syntaxbomb.com/index.php/topic,3303.0.html
Thanks again, works like a charm.
The game play is a lot harder now that I can't just sit and think my way out. :P

Nice job on the graphics... it certainly looks pretty :)
Just finished mine - as much as I can. Not sure it'll make it into the 'good' bracket, celebrating my sons 18th kinda took precedence yesterday, link here:

Just amazed I got close to creating an asteroids game.... Cheers ;)
Thought I'd give this contest a try, even though I really didn't get started until a few days ago. Don't expect to win as my version isn't near as polished as the others here.

Feel kinda bad that I'm the only person who seems to have used a framework.. o.o;
Here's my code but it's kinda useless as I'm unable to include the framework I used.. (On top of being poorly organized.. and badly written.. and super rushed..)
