Title: SyntaxBomb Christmas Magazine #1 - We need you!
Post by: Qube on October 07, 2019, 07:02:12
Let's start a new tradition of making a yearly magazine full of contributions from our esteemed members.

Those who would like to contribute to our 1st Christmas magazine simply need to PM iWasAdam ( do not post in this thread so the content is super secret hush hush ) with any of the following ( pick one or more, it's up to you ) :
Also don't worry about spelling / language barrier etc as the most important thing is content as written by you :)

If your contribution has images then use the img tag and iWasAdam will download them. Or if you want to submit images but are unsure then simply PM me.

Big thanks to iWasAdam who has volunteered to put the magazine together. I have seen the mockup designs and they are superbly retro magazine looking.

Also thanks to GaborD who has agreed to do the graphics for the front cover.

Deadline for submissions is December the 10th so the elves have enough time to work their magic.

It'll be great to have a cool SyntaxBomb Christmas magazine so whatever you want to contribute no matter how small / big please contribute as I think this could be a yearly great bit of fun ;D

More the merrier ;D - It doesn't have to be long or in-depth ( unless you want it to be ) but it'd be great if as many members as possible could contribute to the SyntaxBomb Christmas Magazine.

Pick from any of the categories from the 1st post or even come up with something of your own, let us know your favourite memories growing up, first experiences with computers, nightmare coding moments, favourite game ( and why ), best Christmas story ( or joke ). Main thing is to contribute so we can all have a great read of our 1st magazine over Christmas \o/

Those who don't contribute something will be banned :P - so no excuses not to contribute something small or big ;D

I wish you all the best with this project.  I already do a weekly newsletter at SoCoder, so I've not much time to contribute anything of significance, but ..  depending on how you're aiming to do this, you might like some retro styled gaudy magazine backgrounds for each page.  (I'm thinking Amiga Power and those kinds)

If you head over to my Sprite Generator, in Plain Texture mode (https://agameaweek.com/JNKsg/?plaintexture), click Subtle, and render at 1024, you might find a few of the results to be somewhat handy to use as backgrounds.
..  assuming you're doing this as a great big pdf, and not just a plain text thing.
*shrugs*

Good luck!

I've submitted a few pages, but writing more as and when I have a minute... Work is just mental and when I get in I'm like "Humph" and just slouch! :D

I will get there, I know I dont need loads which is good, and my main piece is done, so... Yeah, just chipping away! ;)

is it ok if i (try to) write an article on a system used in video games which can be applied to real life ?
(it will be short and only conceptual, but quite interesting for video games developpers imo)

i guess that the category would be :
Quote
Or anything you think will be great for the magazine. It doesn't have to be a topic from above

With baseball bat in hand and finger hovering over the ban button...

The December 10th deadline for article submissions is creeping up on us. Those who have confirmed to submitting could you verify that you are still doing so? thanks.

Those that haven't said if they are going to contribute to our 1st Christmas magazine then get them fingers tapping! Doesn't have to be a long essay, crazy in-depth or the most exciting thing since SyntaxBomb ;D - Go on, whip something up to keep iWasAdam busy :P

Lol, its times like this you wonder where time goes! :D

I'm halfway through a arcade piece, you know, the good old days when you went to Blackpool and all that, I was off yesterday so thought champion, I'll get a bit done, but me mams oven broke so I was running about sorting that... It wouldnt of been too bad, but, she was adamant she wanted one yesterday and wanted to go and look, but like any modern day white goods shopping, half the places like currys and that didnt have what she wanted in stock and the majority is order only, finally got her one though, so had to trail all the way to bloody Middlesbrough to pick it up! :/ You have all these big shops, with shite loads of goods displayed, and they have none in... It's no wonder the high street is on its knees... Whats the bloody point in going if you cannot get what you want there and then, you may as well just order from your armchair!

Anyway, it wasnt such a bad afternoon, while she was looking, who'ing an harring on... I accidentally bought an Oculus Quest, lol, pure accidental mind :P Though, only had a quick go this morning, seems canny, if that Oculus Link thing is any good that'll be great as I'll get my Rift games on there, and I do fancy a bit of Lone Echo at the minute! :D

I digress (As always), hope I can plough on with a bit today! :)

I thought the idea was to have the theme of your contribution a secret...I was going to do the same about holidays at Butlins back in the day.  The general buzz of the arcade machines there, the sounds, the atmosphere and general excitement of seeing the latest machines that year.  Plus some of the closer to home arcades; even now hearing the sound of a dying Pacman brings back so many memories - such a distinctive sound!  No point in repeating a similar page or 2 though.

Sure there is :) your memories are yours alone along with your experiences. I and I'm sure others would love to read about your personal take on the good old days of the buzz arcades gave. Me, Isle of Wight, Sandown pier, Kung-fu master and Star Wars :P

Go for it ;D

Erm, looks like my "gobshite" mode kicked in inadvertently there! :D

Still, it doesnt matter, it's sorta like going to get a new shirt in Next for a party, it's a knocky bet someone will have done the same and you get there and someone goes "nice shirt", and they are wearing the same one, difference here is we'll have different fond memories when wearing the same shirt, which will show! ;)

Just a quick question, who do we pass our articles on to when done?
I just finished mine,it's a simple read not to long, has images and gifs to accompany it.
hopefully links to demos are ok as they are use to emphasize the content in the article. :)

If its just a text entry that's also fine - sometimes a picture speaks a thousand words - and yeah, mines is a secret.... not for long mind!   ;D

What software do you use? I did some bigger "newspaper"-layouts a decade ago with "Scribus". It is still alive. (Adobe) Indesign featured some nice stuff but was harder to use in certain areas. As you are a Mac user, software will probably be a different one.

Drop a line if we should do some kind of layout already (I just gave you some text blob and images so you are free to arrange stuff)

Title: Re: SyntaxBomb Christmas Magazine #1 - We need you!
Post by: Derron on December 09, 2019, 13:10:38
If you want a properly layouted book then "word/writer" might not be enough. Albeit "LaTeX" is no longer as superior as it was (especially when it comes to hyphenation/siblings and more important auto grammar- and spelling-correction).

I wrote my university stuff with LaTeX and once it was setup properly it produced the final documents as it should - with ligatures and all the stuff for a pleasant look and easier readability. But ... now people get so used to sans-serif fonts that the old suggestion "use serif fonts for printed documents" is no longer.

iWasAdam is not just putting together text and images here - he wants to layout a "magazine" ... layout is something you would not do in Writer/Word/... nor would you do that with LaTeX (you could ...but wysiwyg is a time saver).

@ QuarkXpress
So you use what you used in the past :)
Thought it was surpassed by InDesign so long ago that it was forgotten by most designers. Seems with their 2018 release they had a comeback ;D

I used InDesign for a couple of brochures in the past - very nice integration with photoshop, but the Adobe way of doing things just kept getting in the way.
Retried QuarkXPress 2018 and it was like having your best friend over for tea and they brought cake too!

So today I got a deal on V2019, and the magazine is ported over to that and all is NIIICE...

@ RemiD - Just send me the text and any images - or links and I'll do the rest here :)

But we are on course for a Dec 18th(ish) release, so you will be able to snuggle down on xmas day with your eggnog and something to read - or just look at the purdy pictures

If you really want more content I could create some text + shots during lunch break.

Just asked as the thing you asked me for ... let's say it would require more than 2 or 4 pages - and this with only sparse text :)

If there is interest in it after the users have read/seen/... stuff, I could either create a video or forum post about it.

Hope Qube (or you as "editor in chief") wrote his editorial / intro page already - to welcome new "readers" and "old subscribers" etc.

No... midnight I will have lost interest in reading. I will download the magazine (to create a huge bill for the massive traffic costs) and print it out - just to throw it into the bin. Yes, and I will eat Santas cookies before he even gulped the first swig of milk. Yes. Qube! you will make me becoming the Grinch. Thanks.

Ok, back to serious business now: iWasAdam? Maybe use the time to double check other stuff to avoid layout glitches, a missing "back cover" or similar stuff. Give the magazine a further polishing with your "I have 12 arms and 48hr days" magic :)

Never any layout error with my work, but spelinges and copy errors - maybe. I'm a designer not a writer - that what I have copy checkers for :)

But... I did manage to convert one page from something fluffy to a (geeky retro) quiz of kinds... It's not even in the contents page(s)!

So you say I should print it at work (including hard-cover/glueing/,...) - but I doubt a magnifying glass works as good as the zoom in our PDF readers.

Hope you publish it as "turn pages"-book-thing - InDesign can export to it
Quark Xpress seems to only export to some html5-export with all the pages as "image", no anachronistic "page flip effect".

People might feel annoyed by these things but for me they bring back the memories of holding a real magazine in my hand, rather than scrolling through a PDF or website.

Maybe it is the flip book export which failed to render stuff properly to images?

Congrats everybody and thanks to Adam for doing a great job on putting it all together...Then Qube messed it all up haha.   :P

As Derron showed, the graphics cover some of the words so can't be read.  And when you have a sensitive mouse scroll wheel like mine it's made worse because the software allows you to use it to either flip pages (which it does at 100 MPH) or when the zoom key is clicked it changes to zoom mode (which causes zooming in and out at 100MPH too!)  Just a simple download would be better.

Huge props to iWasAdam for putting it together!
Looks great and the attention to detail shows.
Works great on my machine, only issues I noticed are one or two images being layered too far in the front, covering a bit of text (prolly the pageflipper, let's just blame Qube  :P )

Thanks to all the contributors for the interesting articles.
This year life got in the way but next time I will try to contribute a full article.

this looks nice, Adam you must have put a lot of time in this, respects!

it is a little too small to read on my tablet, i am going to try to read on the laptop, later.

my only critic is that the allowed topics were too broad, so i did not know if what i wrote would fit in the magazine.
also i prefer when an article is written to potentially concern / be useful to every reader, rather than to talk about my own life, but that's just my preference...
Title: Re: SyntaxBomb Christmas Magazine #1 - We need you!

iWasAdam asked me if I could come up with screens + text on how I created my advertisements (C64 + Genus Prime and the arcade cabinet for Honey Quest). Might be of interest for some - but the more complex scenes become, the more pages I would have required - even if only showing how to do the sides:
start blender, "tab" to edit, "alt + m" for merge, merge at center, move the resulting single vertex with "G", extrude with "e", constrain with x,y,z ... repeat until you have the shape of a cabinet ... then add "solidify modifier", adjust the material index for the resulting rim, ... and so on. So if I only would show certain aspects of the scene it would be a 10+ page thing with many small screenshots and texts consisting of "use shortcut x" (to cut instructions down). Not to talk about a how to for smoke simulation (adding smoke generators, add turbulence and wind affectors, setup the right material, ...). Such stuff is better told in a video tutorial. But if there is interest I could try to create a thread for it (with some screens, texts ...).

Btw I am talking about this:
(again in "small" to not expose too much for the ones not interested in being spoilered)

So next to modelling there is also the whole part of texture painting - which means a lot of small little steps in (eg.) Photoshop. For a one used to a software tutorials can be way way shorter but if you need to target "beginner to advanced" users, stuff can become lengthy and also requiring little visual tricks - eg different borders for images to emphasize who should look at what.

@ personal stories
I think the intention of this magazine was also, to bring the community a bit "together", to leave the scent of a "IT nerd family". You know somewhat "private" from your community collegues. So I think it is good to have a mix - of stories, fun and a slight tech part (you Astar for example - did not dive into it enough but the dynamical obstacles part might be of interest as I for now were always caching information to speed up recalculation or dynamically traversing through the nodes to find my path).

Sorry about the online version and image mangling - Qube said his little helpers had too much eggnog! We're getting it sorted, I promise.

As for the type and style of article - it was open to all in whatever style they felt was best. There might have been minor changes, but most text is as it was delivered. As this is the first edition. I think that anyone who submitted anything or even made suggestions should be pretty stoked.

only 1 article failed to be published, due to the nature of the magazine itself - no downloads, gifs, animations, etc.

Maybe this story can be posted as thread/video (if it already existed) ?

BTW: done reading. Enjoyed the Fairlight CMI story the most (dunno why). Bsisko's computer story ... Every additional sentence I have read made me more and more think "how old is the dude ... and when did he leave parents home" and then I've read he is retired now already. I somehow think I am one of the "chicks" in the nest - being just below 40.

@Derron

I am 60 years old.  I left my parents home in 1987. They are both dead now. While buying computer magazines and books, I earned my money while serving food at a government run mental hospital.  I am now retired from that position, never been married, though I have come across some females that were temping (various races, two black, three white, 1 half white half mexican, four mexican, 7 asian, and a I think 1 apache)  I love playing games too much and researching computer code to ever think about getting married.

Congrats to all involved, on a job well done.
I'll assume that .. things like this (https://socoder.net/uploads/1/2019/51/4FB4C8E3-C52D-4393-86B3-D00DE8D25513.png) are unplanned oddities made worse by the (apparently not 100%) renderer, and not a fault of the editor-in-chief!
Hopefully you can fix those issues over the next few days.  I expect that rendering the pdf as jpgs would probably work out better, but quite a bit larger, too.

It's really quite a lovely result, though.
Bravo!

Glad to see my little bit go in there. The memories of my time with Grandad and inheriting his Vic 20 was what started me on the path I'm still on now and, while I'm not the oldest person on Syntax Bomb as I originally thought - Bsisko appears to have claimed that title, I still think i'll be walking it until the end of my days like him.

The excerpt in the magazine has been shortened quite a bit so it fits two pages but the unedited version of those Two chapters are on my blog in some obscure link on the right, if anyone is interested in the missing bits. I have around 20 chapters mapped out which would eventually make it to the size of probably an auto-biography to cover all the years I have memories from. Basically from the Vic 20, C64,C16,Amiga,Playstation,PC and eventually Mac. I'll eventually put it all to page, hopefully before I cark it, but there's no real way I'd ever considered sharing it until now as nobody's interested in something like this unless the person is actually famous :-)

Adam/Qube, well done on a great job. It's great reading all these articles and seeing a bit of background on some of the other lurkers here. I especially enjoyed reading Bsisko's story and 3dz racing games feature. Here's hoping that, now we've had the first one as an example, we'll get an even bigger one next year as people will have ideas based on what's been shown before.

Oh, and the retro sweets. So many memories. Loved that advert.
Title: Re: SyntaxBomb Christmas Magazine #1 - We need you!
Post by: Xerra on December 22, 2019, 15:02:29
Oh, I forgot to add, the picture of the basic listing on the page is from my memory of the program I created to actually read through pages of data from the Vic 20 Scott Adams game cartridges and look for clues to help me progress when I got stuck somewhere, as I did for months on Voodoo Castle.

How it worked was to read a page of data up to the number of chars available on the Vic screen by peeking and poking to the screen memory. Most of the time you got loads of inverse video garbage because it was a number between 0-255 and the character set equivalent character was shown on screen. However, the text data was stored in memory uncompressed and not encrypted, otherwise my program would have been useless, so full words and sentences would appear after you skipped a few pages. I think I actually had the final program work out which cartridge was in the Vic so I could start the display straight at the useful stuff.

I used to refer to it as an early game-trainer but it didn't hack the game. You just kind of worked out what you were missing based on the text you hadn't seen. I really should have sent the program to a Vic magazine but, by the time I got the computer and started playing with this stuff, it was all C64. The code would have worked on that with a modification to the start locations but I don't believe the cartridges were available for it.

I will create a new section before the end of the week so the top notch work of iWasAdam and the great articles that members submitted are not lost deep down in a thread.

I know, I know, I'm a terrible site admin who should be working on the forum 24/7 ;D

Hi. Thanks for mentioning me on Page 100, Very flattering..
I have progressed since than with this Editor.
I really want to release something out, but not before it will be worth it.

Im quite sure people will be amazed with the things i've done if ill get it to work as i desire.

Im putting lots of effort on this to get it decently working on a basic level.

I also loved this AppGameKit post youve made.. it seems like exactly the framework i always wanted.

Great work on the Magazine .. makes me miss the printed media
