Title: What is your fave IDE?
Post by: 3DzForMe on September 25, 2019, 08:14:50
For me its IDEal - code folding, dual windows, functions, locals files and arrays all available in panes on the right hand side.

Whats your fave and why?

Well. I use Ted21:

Shown with the find panel and color panel active.
Everything is properly color coded with icons, profiling, color mixing, and lots of nice editors built right in.

Here's the binary file viewer in operation: :D
(https://vjointeractive.files.wordpress.com/2019/09/screenshot-2019-09-25-at-08.23.03.png)

it's super quick and restores to the last state when closed/reopened

colored tabs is a very nice addition too

What I use currently for creating games. The default GameMaker Studio 2 default IDE. It looks pretty ugly but once you're used to how it works and tweak it to how you want to work, you get by just fine. Put many, many hours into this beast over the last couple of years.

Previously, in my Blitz days, my productivity went through the roof as soon as I purchased and started using Blide. Just a shame I had to completely abandon it once I went to a Mac because it wasn't supported. I miss that IDE and I'd have a parallels set up now just to still work with it, if I ever decide to go back to working on NG again.

Notepad++, but it's more of a text editor than IDE.
It's so lightweight, fast, lots of cool features... love it.

Notepad++ is ace for HTML stuff,

@Remid,  really  :o Go on treat yourself to IDEal,  you won't look back!

I do like the Visual Studio and Delphi IDE's but when doing PHP / HTML / CSS / MySQL and stuff like that I love TextMate.

Super fast, it's never crashed on me and I've never lost any code using it. It's a winner for me ;D

The price for longest code lines goes to ... Qube.
You can place the price next to your "Am not using prepared statements"-price already on your shelf ;)
(Don't use static salts and a single md5, maybe "password_hash()" / bcrypt  to ease the pain to hash in hash in hash ... ). Nonetheless the code looks pretty leak and clean.

Jokes aside.

Still do not understand why people prefer this "dark mode" editors (just look at this forum here: the post form uses "bright" widgets). I favor the "bright" ones ... and with energy saving on your screen it does not burn into your eyes as people blame.

Geany for me:

Use it for almost any text work which does not really require extra tools (so editing some Python, some PHP, shell, ...). Swiss army knife for sure. Notepad++ on Windows then (albeit it looks a bit hmpf ... "outdated" visually on Windows 10. Not a biggy tough.

bye

@Ron, yeah white backgrounds don't melt the old eyeballs as you infer, although Display Screen Equipment risk assessments encourage you to lower the brightness and contrast to a low level, thus reducing eye strain for those of us who spend long stints at monitors.

Thanks for reminding me to lower my contrast when I get to work laters.

maybe some of you will laugh at it, but i worked on a project using a computer, with a guy who was in his sixties, and to prevent tiring of his eyes, he used something like this :

@Derron I'm near-sighted and this condition makes you more sensitive to bright lights. A dark theme is much more comfortable for me to use. Also, I think it's more elegant.

Regarding women though, I'd go for any and all colors =D

A white background and dark text looks cleaner, for about 5 minutes.  For long periods a darker background is far far more comfortable on the eyes - especially at night.

Of course the next question to ask after What is your fave IDE - is why?  What features make it your fave?

I just use whats there, though, I enjoy using B4x's IDE, its pretty much setup like VB, but a little more basic, but, thats why I like it, your not drowned in bollocks that you'll never use.

Blide is an obvious choice of IDE's for Blitz, its basically that sort of level of quality all BRL's languages should of been bundled with, but instead we got the same sorta setup over and over and nothing really changed while other "indie" type languages were getting better in that department.

I like to have a play with a bit of app->server->app shenanigans, and obviously writing scripts, then uploading them over and over is a pain, even if you write a little batch file to FTP the files up... So when I found ICEcoder (https://icecoder.net/),  I found that awesome, yeah, you miss out on more advanced features, but for me, coding scripts through the browser then just saving it was a joy... Highly recommended!

On Linux, I like Geany, I always plump for that if working with a desktop, console only, I dont mind Nano, it is was it is and does the job of enterage of text... So yeah, mixed bag for me!

SharpDevelop 5.1  (It is C# and I know it is old but it is really good!)

Raylib (No Messing about with Compiler Options like you do with Allergo or SDL or SFML as install Raylib then look the code example then run the program! That it! If you change the code then save it then run it!)

jMonkeyEngine(installed it and look example program and run it and that it!) but it not my fav ide thought.

That Aptana looks nice, but, I'll stick with ICECoder on my server, if it aint broke and all that! ;)

On about text editors, I did write one years ago for webbased stuff, not sure if Qube remembers it, I named it Sanitary Pad... I thought it was funny! :P

Inner child and all that! :P

That is most awesome looking, especially if you have to hot desk. Otherwise - turn the contrast, birghtness and that down to what is comfortable for you. This helps to reduce eye strain  :)

Was it down to the fact it kept your eyes from watering thru tiredness - love it!

IDEal still wins - apart from the minor grumble (that I keep forgetting about....) it can use the 'last' place you used as a compilation target - as opposed to your current one. Easy to resolve if you code regularly - I'm sporadic as hell these days coding, which doesn't help

Ideal when i was in blitz3d
Blide when im on blitzmax

Blide is not bad.
But the developer didn't add buttons for going back and forth in locations where you were
So I need to suffer this stupidity and get along.
I never understood people who charge money for their products and than forgot to add one simple thing to their project that is so essential

I use VSCode when coding, and Sublime when working with just text.
I don't think there's anything VSCode can't do or don't have an extension for - https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/vscode (https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/vscode).
And being able to manage everything Git related (PRs, Blame, File/Line history) directly inside VSCode is fantastic.
Jumping between languages seamlessly (BlitzMax, NG, C#, C++, GO, Python, LUA etc.), edit any text file (JSON, XML, INI etc.), real-time preview of files you edit, view and edit media files, integrated terminal (control server via SHH), Live Sharing code, SSH and WSL remote coding and so much more.
Just the fact that I can keep all my code on my server and access it via any VSCode installation seamlessly anywhere in the world like it's a local project, then invite anyone to help me live code with integrated voice chat just makes it the best.

I don't think anyone's made a Blitz3D extension for it (so much for "it's got an extension for everything!").
And I honestly didn't even know Blitz3D still worked on modern machines...
But you can use the default build tasks to launch the Blitz3D compiler and link it to your source.
Which will be more initial work than just hitting Build of course, and is what an extension would sort for you automatically, but it should still work.
Syntax Highlighting will be a different beast and will require an extension to tell VSCode what regex to use.

I've made a BlitzMax extension for VSCode though, which you can find here: https://www.syntaxbomb.com/index.php/topic,5771.0.html
It supports Legacy BlitzMax and supports BlitzMax NG even better.
You could use the source and adapt it for Blitz3D.

This is really freaky combination of colours..

by the way i don't know what kind of button above members talking with BLIDE
well also BlitzMax IDE - Community Edition looking to me very nice and good enough.
I really don't know why some users expected such a amount of features
i know some programmers which use just Notepad for his coding...ok it is little bit hard core :o

Asking for return button ain't too much to ask.
People who program in notepad probably not facing the project size i do..

Complaining is part of way to improve stuff
Especially when you pay on something.
If it wasn't important i would not have mentioned it..

Besides, the developer of blide also made jungle ide
And their he did implemented back and forth botton.

Programming with notepad is dumb
Unless you have no choice.

You can also program with wood with Carving

Mainly it's to make the tedious stuff, like Git related things, easier.
And some modern projects, like a NET Core project would be hell to setup without an IDE.
But as I said, I use Sublime a lot, which is just pure text.
But then I have to launch a bunch of apps on the side to get things done.
And in worst case scenarios, like with GitHub PRs, I have to actually navigate to a webpage to get the information I need.
So I might as well use something that has everything integrated already, and something that works with most languages. :)
But I really do like simplicity as well, and I strongly recommend Sublime!

Post by: Hardcoal on November 20, 2019, 23:35:59
Keep it simple is one thing. keep it flawed is another..

I may be blunt to some people, but at some issues as important as IDE I cant take it lite.

Ive always criticized IDEs, I think and Im certain that high IDE level allows high level coding
and vice versa.

An advanced IDE should including a Flowchart style of Editing.. Something graphic..
but thats not the case..

I have my own perspective of how things should be.

BLIde for BlitzMax is probably my favourite, Notepad++ for other stuff if that counts.
