Title: REBOOT Comp entry - Vandamonium (AGK)
Post by: blinkok on March 12, 2020, 04:20:00
Rebooting Stevie G's Van Tourisimo (https://www.syntaxbomb.com/index.php/topic,3971.0.html) as a mario kart-ish game written in AGK.

I'm not sure i can make it happen but i thought i would try making it more about stopping the other guys from winning rather than going faster than them. Lots of crash bash.

My experiments tell me a need 5 tiles. I have recreated one of the tracks-ish to check. This is a vector image which i can export to make the 3d tiles. I will make something to align them and tidy it up in my 3d proggy. So i guess the tracks will be whole 3D models.

I have modeled a base van which i will colour. I was thinking of doing famous vans but for now just the base model.

So my to do list right now is;
1. Tidy up my van
2. Make the tracks
3. Code baby!!!  :P

Note: I would like to use my existing kart physics stuff. Let me know if that's not ok and i'll redesign it. Probably need to optimize it anyway

Love the name! Good luck with it - just make sure it's not better than the original  ;)

Could have been "Vandemonium" (like "Pandemonium") and then you have to drive the Vans through fiercy roads of lava and fire :)

PS: you have choosen a game in which you have high chances of fall into the trap of "the sequel is always not as good as the original one" ... so try your best and convince to be an exception.

Thanks matty

Exporting to .obj format file done (Will prolly have to weld those segments together but i think i'll just do that in my 3D proggy)

All of those vans plus the one from "Breaking Bad" - you could call it "Braking is Bad" maybe :)

Yeah. Those are all cool. The reliant might be difficult. The physics system needs 4 wheels, i guess i could change it or make the front two wheels really close together.
I like the mutt cuts van from dumb and dumber as well.
I would need to have a lot of spare time though.

Done.
I have a problem now because it's not generic. I'll have to do other designs
I'll do some NPC path stuff to avoid thinking about it

Was gonna say "cute little van" but got beaten to it.  :)

Very nice, like your style. Always gives that arcade-like feeling also pressent in classic 2d games such as Pacman, but you manage to capture that same feel very effectively in 3d.

Yeah, that's really something they can/should improve on.

I mean, I can do it, but compared to Blitz3d it's rather cumbersome.

Thanks guys. Really appreciate the support.
Back to placeholder assets. NPC's are following paths and recovering from crashes (Prolly needs some more work)

Nice - it says Freaky Mario Kart  8)

something to think about - if you are going for a cartoony style, then exaggerate stuff. Think Whacky Races. keep the track the same, but make the vans bigger, give one HUGE blobby tyres and make it bobble along, have a nutjob tank with a bonkers commander that fires missiles when challenged. Or a van with bats that bite tyres - just a (mad) thought :)

Looks good so far.

@Cartoony
Yes, better this than trying to have realistic stuff. So exaggerate here and there.
Maybe have animal drivers and so their vans can be designed according to their drivers - shark fin on the top, spider-van with 6 tires, dog van with slappy ears, pussy van with ...uhm... I think you got what I mean :D
Still you must think about keeping the drivers "aggressive", "hard to fight" etc - so not too "soft" and "childish".
A dog could still have tattoo "Bone breaker" or a sign "pussy eater" (sorry :D) in the back of his car.

@ roads
Do not forget to mark cross roads with street paintings - just to aid the eyes where to drive along.

Keep it going.

bye
Ron

Yeah looks pretty "sweet".

Suggestion: the tunnel does not have any "shading". So the whole surface looks a bit "flat". Either have some shading (might look incoherent) or add some decoration to make it distinct between ceiling and side walls. Maybe some lamps from the ceiling or cables or ... whatever you can come up with.

Yeah that looks excellent, lovely smooth 3d cartoon graphics.  I'm sure you'll offer a fullscreen mode when complete, because a menu bar has no right being in a console-type game.

This is coming on really well. Can't wait to see some argy-bargy between the other vans as well. Assume they are going to be a little less rigid in their path round the track. At the moment they are too well behaved.

I'm going to miss the deadline.
It pisses me off because it is simply a lack of discipline.
I'll still finish the game. I reckon it will be about two more weeks.
Bugga!

Last ditch sprint for the finish line. Trim down some features that you can add later on after competition over. Whatever it takes to get it done for the deadline.
