Title: Got a new laptop
Post by: TomToad on August 23, 2019, 22:42:17
Finally got a new laptop today.  Got this one https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NH.Q5VAA.001 (https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NH.Q5VAA.001).
Haven't really pushed it yet, but it has done well with everything I tried with it, far better than my old laptop.  The only thing negative I have found is the keyboard.  The keyboard illuminates with red letters on black keys.  The problem is if I don't press a key for a while and the backlight goes out.  Red on black is difficult to read when not lit. So I need to press a non printing key (like one of the shift keys) to turn on the backlight so I can see what I'm typing.  My desktop also has an illuminating keyboard, but it is white on black so the keys are easier to see when not lit.

Other than that, it is doing very well. :)

Not a bad spec at all for the price :) - The 4GB GeForce GTX 1050 will serve you pretty well as that card is great for the price / performance ratio.

Isn't there any settings to keep the backlight on or perhaps a 3rd part utility?

Yes, there is a setting, but I prefer not to have the light on all the time.
As for cost, I managed to get it for about $50 cheaper on sale, Making it one of the cheapest gaming laptops around.

That is a nice laptop. when I eventually upgrade I think that's the sort of spec I'll be looking for . That computer is twice as good as mine at least but I have put together a few games with this one so am quite pleased form the money . Mines over a year old now and knock on wood it lasts me a while yet. Enjoy your new machine .
Just to let you know my machine is the HP stream 14 . Didn't really expect to be doing any 3d programming on it but it does just fine .

I totally agree, these days I don't go for the latest graphics card tech (even on a desktop system).  But the GTX 1050 is a great bang for your buck kinda card, and ensures a better chance of anything I write running well on more systems.

Hmm, interesting..

I've a new laptop with 4GB GeForce GTX 1050 too (Asus VivoBook Pro 15 N580VD  to be precise).

My keyboard has white backlight that turns off after a while, but I really can't tell which key is which in the dark so I just press LeftCtrl as it's at bottom left and easiest to find.

Curious to see what FPS you manage to get in AGK as some people seemed to think it should be higher than the ~350FPS I'm getting with vSync off.

@Rick: With no graphics being rendered, I average about 920 fps.  The tests that Qube posted a few weeks ago run about 250 fps for AGK classic, and about 420 fps for the Studio version.

Well, not even getting close to, but can run F1-2019 no problem, except from the fact that it's getting pretty hot. However I didn't really buy it to play, rather than create so can't complain: still way better than my old HP and boss paid for it.

Great laptop, but the only downside is the battery is bloody atrocious.  Lucky to get an hour off of a full charge.

I really can't see the point of buying such a powerful laptop with a screen that large, because it will kill the battery and be so damn noisy when the fan kicks in as it overheats.  Quite happy with my 13 inch MacBook Pro for portable work.

And I can't see the point of buying overpriced Apple junk, but each to their own.

Could start a MCIBTYC flame war right there with that comment.

I happen to love "Apple junk"

2 iMacs, 2 iPads, 2 iPhones and a Mac Mini in this house. I also have a Windows laptop that is so shoddy for a 2 year old computer it's unbelievable. The missus uses it when she wants to avoid my farting in the man cave but I won't touch the thing as it's so bloody slow. And I paid for it. Never have this issue with my "Apple junk" and so I don't care if it cost me a bit more money to buy it. One of the iMacs is now 9 years old and there's fuck all wrong with it.

Lol I agree, it was a Christmas Present.  I just needed a laptop with a good battery life for work, but also cross platform support as I already have a Windows and Linux System.

Odd you say that as I've found the iMac to be the best computer I've ever had, super reliable, no viruses and the Radeon RX 580 8GB is no slouch for games either. Talking of junk I can't stand that piece of junk they call Windows 10 :P

Funny. I got this RTX 2070, along with a new Ryzen CPU for a fraction of what my iMac costed.
And the iMac is only about 3 years old and already can't play any modern games.
And I've never had any virus or problems with my PCs.
The second i start my iMac my head starts to hurt cause there's an update I need to restart for, and I need to re-enter my password for the Appstore and blah blah. :(
Trying to stick a new and faster SSD into the iMac was a hassle as well, almost turned me insane.
(it's still slow compared to my PC though.)

Yes, Apple is a rip off and not worth the money... There, potential pointless arguments over ;D

lol, to be fair their laptops are very nice though.  Very solid aluminium built, wafer thin, great battery and a great screen...The company are arseholes though.

I'm not here to argue and I'm not saying that they're a "rip off and not worth the money".
Just saying it's funny that you feel that way with PC and I feel that way with Mac.
To each his own I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lol I know you're not here to argue :P Just avoiding PC vs Mac debates as it's a personal choice and neither side can be solely correct. Like iOS vs Android, Xbox vs Playstation, C64 vs ZX Spectrum etc etc.

I own them all, and I can say this; they're all terrible in their own way. :)

Yup, they all have their great points and all have their terrible points. Personally I love MacOS and my iMac but others hate it with a fiery passion. One thing though is that I couldn't live without Windows as I use Visual Studio and Delphi a lot. Luckily Parallels has that covered ;D

In a nutshell, just use what works best for you :)

I've got an Asus which is also out of aluminium, but I can't help thinking that it won't prevent damage more than plastic as plastic cracks on impact, aluminium bends which can damage delicate components much more.
Also plastics are cheaper to replace, if the parts are still ok.
Aluminium looks great but I still wouldn't bet it will save an LCD when falling.

Or am I completely missing the point? I wouldn't dare to do a drop test.  ;D

I know the iBook story, but still wouldn't bet on dropping it on a stone floor.
Probably the first thing to go is the LCD.

Ok, for all you MacGuys:

Only an idiot would carry a laptop around like that, I carry mine in a case with a handle and put it on a desk/table when in use, and have never knocked it off.  Besides, that doesn't look like it's made out of one piece of aluminium like mine - so a different model?  But even though he was testing unfairly (deliberately dropping on a corner rather than just dropping the thing naturally) the machine kept on working.

Get better soon dude.

I thought the normal way for carrying around a laptop was hopping on one legg with my hands helt high in the sky for it to cool properly.
Not familiar enough with different iBooks ( purposely sticking to the alternative Apple nomenclature), but if you like we can do a little experimenting..  :P

No, just kidding of course. I must say that I was surprised it survived the initial impact even. Most laptops won't in my experience as support technician(prev job) so they must be build pretty sturdy. Only solid steel and an LCD cast in rubber edges with thick plastic shield would be less breakable and foolproof, but also way to heavy and impractical to use. It's a trade off. Have to draw the limit somewhere.

Thanks, inflammation of frontal cavities supposedly.   :(
