what a good time to learn : 90% reduction on udemy courses, (5 days left)

i have seen an ad when watching a video about how to test a component for arduino, this is a great opportunity to learn something new, there are courses about programming languages / IDEs like unity / unreal, procedural generation, electronics, programming for arduino / raspberry.

maybe go take a look : udemy.com ( type unreal or unity or arduino or raspberry in the search field, and be amazed, yeah 8) )

I got the make minecraft in Unity course last year at a discount there. 10 dollars or so. You get a very basic minecraft game with it that I was able to compile without to many difficulties. The coding is in Unity but it was not to hard translating this to Monkey2.

I looked yesterday for some kind of music production course for Workstations like the Kronos but no results found. (I bought a Kronos, recently :D )

Three hours after reading this comment I return. My wallet is now £30 lighter and I consider myself considerably enlightened. I found a couple of courses on my development system that looked very interesting so picked them all up. I like how you can view some sample content so you get an idea of what kind of content you're getting, the tutors teaching style and, frankly, wether you're going to find them annoying or not.

Thanks a lot for pointing this sale out to us. I'd never have probably come across Udemy if it wasn't for this heads up. Much appreciated.

@Xerra>>yes, this is a great opportunity :) i did not have time to watch the intro videos yesterday, but i am going to do this now, for 4 different courses (electronics / arduino), and then most likely buy them.
it is quite useful to be able to learn from different people specialized in a specific field that you are interested in. (i already bought a course on procedural generation last year)  8)

If you are subscribed to a university (or kind of) you might have free access to lynda.com courses ...
Here in Germany also (some) public libraries offer access to them ...

I only use tutorials for ... dunno ... nothing anymore. Complete projects are not that useful (no own creation) and for certain parts of a software / technique you will find a lot of tutorials on youtube. Regarding simple "tuts" I think the time of "free" has come (as it was in the early 2000s for freeware games - before smartphones were made popular).

You guys who bought tuts: I am interested in what you bought (and why). Maybe it is of interest for others too ("hey you bought XYZ too...").

bye

Doubt anyone else would have much interest in these than me, apart from the other GMS2 users on this board.

@Derron>>basically i have watched all the overview videos of several courses about arduino / raspberry, and depending on which technologies / components were explained and depending on how the "teacher" express himself / herself, i have chosen to buy a few (6)

( you talk too much with (unecessary) details to be a good teacher, imo, forget about it :P )

Yes there are a lot of free youtube course videos out there Derron.  But what you tend to find is the person putting them out there suddenly stops producing them.  For coding tutorials people give code but no theory why code is used this way, or use outdated practices.  So you look at somebody elses videos and that person is a poor tutor or contradicts what you've seen in other videos...It becomes a mess.

Rather than somebody with many years of experience and who is also capable of educating successfully over a complete course - with great feedback on that course.

I was very careful to watch all the sample videos of the courses that I did pick as I wanted to make sure that I would learn a few new things - and possibly better ways to do stuff I already have. There were some examples I watched that were absolutely dreadful tutorials where it was plainly obvious they were just winging it, when explaining something, and some even just kept drifting into talking about other unrelated subjects that I got completely lost. Glad I could see they would have been a waste of money before I coughed up for them.

I'm still dithering on one about characters animation which is pretty short - only 6 parts, i think, and the first 5 are viewable without buying the course. I can see myself doing something like what he's done in a future game now I've watched it.

Yes I talk about all and nothing in the same time - still I tought plenty of stuff to others if they asked (during study or school of course). Teaching programming ... nah, I think that isn't someting for me, neither teaching nor getting taught. As soon as you have a certain level of knowledge you start to think to "know it better" and then you reject other principles they want to teach you - and if you teach others they might do the same and therefor you will feel kind of annoyed sooner or later.

I would not try to see videos about coding - I prefer written tutorials as I can go through the lesson in my own pace. I accept tutorials for applications: blender tutorials, CAD programmes (solidworks, autocad, ...) just as the _interaction_ (the "way of doing") is something you can learn there. In code it is more like learning to write a good book - you would not watch tutorials about writing a book, would you (except for the psychological part of it).

So I watched tutorials for Godot - because of the editor and the way interaction is done there. Also some stuff is only available in video form (think some people just prefer it).

@ arduino / raspi
So about the technical parts ("expanding functionality", "gpio"...) and not "programming for an arduino" ? If so then yes, this is what I would watch too (if I was interested).

Feel free to report here once you (all) finished your courses - am interested in your feels ("learned something", "totally wasted my time")...

@Derron>>i am sure that you could be a good teacher with the knowledge that you have, and some training (to simplify, to focus on the essentials), i am just trolling a little  ;)

something that i often say, but that people with a good understanding / skills in a specific field often forget (me included) : what you know is not necessarily what others know, and that's why being a teacher is not easy, because you have to simplify to the max, without removing the key elements (to really understand something or to achieve a result)

so far, i have not learned much from the beginning of the course, noticed an error, but i bet that i will have learned a few useful things in the end...
