Was there ever a version 0.82?  Wouldn't that be a pre-release build?

Just had a rummage around on my network drive and all I can find is 1.80.  Odd since I normally keep all versions.

I have a version of Manic miner by Andy Noble. it's a BB file that says v0.82. I assumed it was compiled with BlitzBasic V0.82. Ive compiled it before but im getting errors now after trying it again. So maybe im looking for old versions that i can try until it compiles again. Sorry if that's a little vague.

I can use the .EXE for it but i want to look at the code for it again.  :)

Here's the readme file.

ллВБАLEGAL BIT:АБВлллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллл

This game is released as FREEWARE and I except no responsibility for any
damage caused by using this programme.
The original game is (C) 1983 BUG-BYTE Ltd and SOFTWARE PROJECTS Ltd.
     (C) 1997 Alchemist Research.

Please copy on to anybody you know providing you do not charge for the
privilage, this file accompanies the game and the source remains as is.

If you intend to use this game on a magazine cover disk or campilation CD,
please contact me at the address below.

ллВБАINFO:АБВллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллл

This game was written over approx. 6 weekends using the excellent Blitz
Basic. It is almost a straight conversion from my C version but certain
things had to be changed because of the way blitz works. All the gameplay
remains same, just some of the eye-candy had to be changed. In the end,
re-writing it has shown me some glaring mistakes and I have probably added
a few new ones to.

"So, why did I bother when it almost identical to the C version?"
Well, just to show the Blitz community some support. These guys are a
great bunch of people and if this programme does anything to bring some
new users over to Blitz then it has been worth while.

---

Right, lets get something straight. If you are looking for Manic Miner 97,
you are looking in the wrong place. You will not get any rendered intros,
rendered Willy's (Oo! Er!) or rendered anything. I have made the game in
it's original style. I like to think of it as a version of the game that
would have appeared in 1984 if such things as "256 colour displays" where
about. I am sick of downloading a game off the net, only to see some rendered
intro and no game. Lets get back to basics. Lets play some good, old
fashioned, playable games.

"Why have I done a PC version when the emulated version is perfect ?"
The answer is this. I just wanted to. I like to mess around with programming.
I am not very good at it, but I enjoy it. It's as simple as that.

ллВБАTHE GAME:АБВллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллл

Miner Willy, while prospecting down Surbiton way, stumbles upon an
ancient, long forgotten mine-shaft. On further exploration, he finds
evidence of a lost civilisation far superior to our own, which used
automatons to dig deep into the Earth's core to supply the essential raw
materials for their advanced industry. After centuries of peace and
prosperity, the civilisation was torn apart by war, and lapsed into a long
dark age, abandoning their industry and machines. Nobody, however,
thought to tell the mine robots to stop working, and through countless
aeons they had steadily accumulated a huge stockpile of valuable metals
and minerals, and Miner Willy realises that he now has the opportunity to
make his fortune by finding the underground store. Can YOU take the
challenge and guide Willy through the underground caverns to the
surface and riches. In order to move to the next chamber, you must
collect all the flashing keys in the room while avoiding nasties like
POISONUS PANSIES and SPIDERS and SLIME and worst of all, MANIC MINING
ROBOTS. When you have all the keys, you can enter the portal which will
now be flashing. The game ends when you have been "got" or fallen
heavily three times.

ллВБАINSTRUCTIONS:АБВллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллл

For those of you who have never played Manic Miner before,
all you have to do is collect X number of objects from each
screen to open the exit before your air runs out.
Sounds easy ? Just give it a try.

From the loading screen press any key to get to the main title.

On the title screen:
F1           ABOUT and GAME SPEED
ENTER/RETURN Start Game.

(If you leave the keyboard alone the game will go into demo mode.)

In Game:
Q E T U O = Left
W R Y I P = Right
Z X C V B N M , . / SPACE = Jump
A S D F G = Pause
H J K L   = Music toggle

ESCAPE      at any time will take you back to the title screen.
F10         will quit the programme.

To use the "pop up" boxes, LEFT and RIGHT change the option and
JUMP selects.

ллВБАSOUND SUPPORT:АБВлллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллл

Blitz uses the excellent FMOD and should not give you any hassles. If
however, you find you are having problems, just check your sound card
settings in the control panel.

ллВБАFINAL WORDS:АБВлллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллл

I hope you enjoy the game and I hope it brings back some happy and
frustrating memories.

I would like some feedback even if it's bad. So please send mail to
andy@andyn.demon.co.uk.

Oh, by the way, there is a CHEAT you know.

couldn't it be ... Manic Miner v0.82 - and not "Blitz Basic 0.82" ?

Supporting my assumption by checking the version history in the above printed source code - which mentions "0.75".

I read there:

Manic Miner for BlitzBasic 0.82

this might be misleading :D

Why do you need an older version of the language/tool ? Not compatible with a newer one?

From 20 years ago, damn time moves on  :'(

Compiles just fine with Blitz Plus.  Be sure the data folder is in the same place as the source.  Then load in and compile mm-main.bb

Frustrating when this happens. Ive attached a screen shot where you can see Version of BlitzPlus and error im getting and the folder with both directorys in.
For the life of me i can't see the mistake im making. If i am indeed making one?

Do you have a link to the Version your using just incase mine's currupted somehow?

I'd wager that none of the images are loading, which could be for several reasons.

1. The file paths are wrong, or...
2. The files simply aren't there (which if the EXE runs, they probably are, so see reason #1)
3. Your GPU doesn't support 320x240 mode.

In the case of point 3, I'm sure that Graphics 320,240,16,0 is trying to set a fullscreen mode (hence the last zero), your GPU probably won't support that and consequently it won't load any images because there is no graphics context.  Change the last zero to a 1 or a 2, see if that makes a difference.

Yes, I would suggest something similar. Try
Graphics 320,240,32,2
this should do the trick.

TomToad

1. Do not put your source in "Program Files" nor "Program Files (x86)".  Windows doesn't like when programs access that folder after the initial install of the program.
2. Make sure that the data folder is in your source directory (the entire folder, not just the images)

I doubt it is a problem with the graphics card, otherwise the original .exe probably wouldn't work; though changing the Graphics command as already suggested wouldn't hurt to try.

Check for "Null" straight after loading, and check the others too, if they are fine, try replacing the LOGO image with another random one, even copying one of the paths above, maybe the original is corrupt. If it loads fine and null isnt returned after loading, obviously something is going tits up on the way... So check for null again before that line that throws a wobbler... Then, erm, check if it has been free'd or whatever before then and when, maybe try a FileExists on the path as well... Basically, chuck the kitchen sink at it.

Like Tom said, copy and paste the project out of "Program Files (x86)" and dump it somewhere writable so windows doesnt butt in.

TomToad

1: unzip the manicbb.zip file somewhere.
2: inside the MANIC folder, there is source.zip.  Unzip that file somewhere other than "Program Files" or "Program Files(x86)"  Either in your user directory, in a subfolder from root, or a different drive will work.  example: c:users\username\manic_source\ or c:manic_source\.
3: copy the entire data folder from the manicbb folder into the source folder
4: open mm-main.bb in BlitzPlus
5: compile
