Just think of the backgrounds in Super Mario games ... they are candy but "less saturated".

Solid, The 6w x 9h grids a bit short noted columns grid was 6w x 13h,I have to keep in line with the meter
gimmick which clears 4 horizontal lines when used. that backgrounds spiffy I can dig it.
The HUD's just the boarder elements with space to throw all control inputs high score, current score in it I suppose.
one things for certain I need more gradient. Props to you adam for feed back, i'm always cool with it.  :)

I don't see a "Xerra" in that screenshot. Isn't it now tradition to have one somewhere in your games? :-)

Nothing to show today...

But i have been going through my Amiga sample libraries (1.5 gigs - work that out in floppy disks!) for inspiration and that 80's/90's vibe...  8)

Second art pass ... it's slowly getting there.

Here's what I've been up to. This works better than just static screenshots, although the video makes it seem a bit sluggish. Just me using Snagit as I don't have anything else to hand for doing this stuff.

@Xerra, Nice ... I've only done the 2d rigged marionette technique twice and man it was tedious especially with extra elements like eyes, mouth and stuff.

my bad for the detour but yeah it's looking good man. :)

Hahah that game looks cracking, mr MM. I'm doing the same kind of platform route but probably not to the detail you've got here with foreground and background scenery. Santa looks like he's fucking deranged, however. Too much of the old sherry, maybe?

I've got to rejig the big guy, though. I did a bit of scaling on him and some of it is off causing different heights in different animation phases. Can't leave it as is because it looks lazy at present.

I'll be using smaller sprites in the main game as once I have enemies in there I want to have quite a few of them running and jumping around probably. I didn't want to show any of the in-game stuff in that video as it's a background of just temporary collision objects at present so I can fine-tune the movement and scrolling. Player can fire, jump about, reach the helicopter etc, but there's no background or enemies, so kinda pointless showing that.

lol good stuff. I'm not showing much at the moment - just that player sprite in my Avatar.  Although I do have moving and shooting in now, with arrow keys for movement and WASD for 4 directional shooting (or joypad and 4 fire buttons).  So you can move in one direction and shoot in another.

Tommy Gunn <- you made my day :)
And an Insanity Claus!!!! Brilliant :)

Nothing to show, nothing to hear <- but I have got a few bars of music done \o/ And it makes me smile and laugh so that's all good.
Got to admit it's fun to go back to the 80's and house music plus steeping yourself in the Bitmap Brothers (they weren't!) and the Amiga...

If you're going back to house music then this track from 1987 was probably one of the greatest. Certainly the only one I ever really remember.

or this absolute belter of a track, although I'm not sure it counts as house music as it's a bit before that all kicked off.

I have no idea what I'll do for this....I'm tempted to write something in blitz3d rather than a browser game...but my motivation to code a game right now is not high.

I get quiet time at home when the missus goes out or watches TV downstairs, which is the ideal time for me to continue working on something. Usually I'm unmotivated and want to just watch something on the media player, or play a game. Anything lacking in effort, as I like to surf the net and just chill out, rather than doing constructive stuff more than I really should. I find that as long as I can force myself to fire up the IDE and have a quick look at whatever I'm working on, the enthusiasm kicks in, and I start getting on with it.

It's hard work sometimes to kick yourself in the butt and get that far but deadlines help, which is why I'm more likely to get a game finished for a competition, instead of taking bloody years, like I did with Boulderdash.

You just got to sit in your chair, quit stuff like the web browser and email, and then get stuck in.
