Pixel Art, ruined
« on: August 08, 2020, 04:05:40 PM »
Hmm I've just seen a graphics update to a well known game and IMO it actually looks worse!  I think if you're going for a pixel art look, but then add a much higher resolution and lots of extra colours you fall between 2 stools.  There are plenty of retro pixel art games with great game play on Steam or itch.io like Shovel Knight or Stealth Bastard Deluxe.  There are also AAA high resolution 3d games...Two totally different looks...To me 2d pixel art loses all it's charm if you try to turn it into a high resolution semi AAA game, it just looks odd.

I guess the guy needs the money, so I can't blame him.  I just won't be buying.

MacOS Catalina, 64-bit, 8Gb RAM, CPU Intel i5, 2.3 Ghz, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB
Linux Mint 19.3, 64-bit, 16Gb RAM, CPU Intel i5, 3.2 GHz, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 (2Gb)
Raspberry Pi 3 and 4

It looks horrific.

I mean, I was never a fan of the original art style (as such I've never played the game).  Yet they've excelled themselves in making it look worse.  ::)
Intel I9-9900K 3.6-5.0GHz | GeForce RTX2070 8GB | 32GB RAM | 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD | 1TB HDD | Windows 10 x64.
MSI Apache Pro | I7-7700HQ | GeForce GTX1060 3GB | 8GB RAM | 128GB SSD | 1TB HDD | Windows 10 x64.

Is it this? There is a short moment in the video in which they tell that the "painting look" is animated/doing something in the game. So dunno. It does not look much worse than the original one (which seems to have been antialiased etc already).

Am not really liking both styles.

bye
