For one,  the sense of reward from achieving what should be implausible as an indie is a HUGE driver.

But, gotta share guys, as I approach my 6th decade on the old planet earth, the nuances of getting a 'BANG' sprite to appear where my grenade should be exploding...  jeez louise (Lylat wars N64 style)

I will achieve this before the year is out....

Yet again, thanks to Qube for kindling my overly ambitious (and why not shoot for the stars when indie coding) indie stuff.

Never going to happen for me. I'll be coding until the day I cark it. Probably just as casually as I do now but still going, in some form.

There's something about the structure and organisation of projects and neat coding that appeals really strongly to me. Been like that ever since I wrote my first basic routines in the early eighties. I just love doing it and probably enjoy it more because it's never been a job for me, so i can pick it up and drop it as I please.

Fixed the last (known) bug in my Boulderdash remake today and added in gamepad support within 20 minutes because of what I learned writing my previous game. Every time you learn something new and improve your skill set when you write games. Or any kind of coding, come to that.

Said to the missus the other day that if the house burns down then I'm saving the cat and my Mac. If I can still get in after I've got them to safety then I'll come back for her. That didn't go down too well :-)

I've been programming for 34 years now and the "love" left long ago.  I really started to dislike it when I was working on Magicville - an "on and off" project I struggled (with myself, mentally, not the code) to finish between 2007-2010.  Made a bunch of solitaire games after that - money being the main motivator, got ripped off by an artist which really didn't sit so well with how I already felt about gamedev, and it left me about four grand down after the lawyers had done rifling through my pockets.

I still want to make stuff, mainly because I'm no good at anything else that can turn a profit.  On paper I'm as thick as shit.  But now I always hit "the wall" of not being able to produce artwork and I don't have the confidence (or the capital, really) to outsource that side of it any more.

Same here, I find coding a facinating and challenging hobby so love tinkering with code.  I also enjoy the whole creation concept which includes producing some artwork.  But because it's a hobby I feel I enjoy it much more than if I were to try and make some money with it.

@3DzForMe - Don't give up - It's quite the surprise when you've not coded games in a long while how much fun you've been missing out on. Take a few weeks away from coding but think about the next game you'll do and how you'll do it. You'll go back with new enthusiasm.

Simples... Centre handle all sprites and as you know the x,y of said grenade you can draw your bang sprite at the same location

Me too, I love doing all the coding, graphics and music myself even though I'd like to do it all to a much higher quality, but I enjoy all those aspects so I'll continue to inflict my creations on you lot

That's what I was doing..... In retrospect I think I was falling fowl of the old trying to place an image within a go bang function.... That and a little help from Mr Heineken. My grenades will go bang this weekend with the pieces being having effects on the ole cowboys life 😉🎉

Think that is an issue many "indies" have: no trust in either artists - or that one owns work is "good enough" for the masses to justify paying artists a huge bit of money "in advance".
You could always "collaborate" with others (team up with artists, designers ...) but this is also a financial risk.


But I understand you that "love" for coding comes and goes. There are weeks in which I just do not have much motivation to open up my code editors - neither at work nor at home. Use these times to learn something new - eg. 3d modelling and rendering

The grass is the same green on both sides.
Most artists will have stories of losing many months of work due to projects suddenly being cancelled, team members quitting or doing subpar work, art being stolen/plagiarized, etc.
Not to mention the frustration of constantly dealing with "project leaders" who have no clue whatsoever about game dev. (seems to be a common theme in indie dev lately)
It's understandable why many artists and game designers tend to stick to own projects. The truth is you need them a lot more than they need you.

A small solid longterm team is the way to go in my experience. Hard to find the right people, but it's a true game changer if you do.

I will try to make games for a living until I fall over dead (which is prolly soon  ).
Always loved it, even though it's sometimes frustrating (contract work being the worst). Luckily so far the motivation is still there and I am back to own projects now.
