Just a bit of fun here but I thought it could be interesting for all the people who've submitted competition games over the last three years at Syntax Bomb to name their own favourites.

What I mean here is to list your favourite of the games that you have written and not just your favourite game of all of them. Obviously it's simple enough for the guys who've only entered once but there's quite a few of us <looks at Adam> who have been pretty prolific.

I'll start with my games and go with Rockman for the following reasons:

A huge amount of learning hours that went into coding it.
The memories of playing the original as a teenager, and going back to it so many times to check things.
The original author joining Syntax Bomb to compliment me on the game - this was massive to me.
Using my crappy framework I'd been tinkering with for the first time to create a game. A lot more work had to go into it afterwards :)
Making a game that I didn't think I could do just to challenge myself. Especially after bombing out of the previous competition.

There's quite a few bugs and glitches in the game when I go back and look at it again but I'm still very proud of it. I will do a sequel one day as I have mapped out quite a few ideas for it already.

Also I've had a couple of people pay me for the game on Itch which may not be as good as actual feedback but it's a nice gesture.

lol Xerra is one of the most consistant here when it comes to completing games, and I'm the antithesis of that.   :))

You mention Adam, but Adam to be fair talks about consistant tools, and also being very familiar with his language of choice.  I think this is key, having a consistant bunch of tools you know inside and out with a game engine/set of routines you can call on for each project.  I've always switched languages because the author decided to dissappear whenever I started to become proficient, so I didn't get to produce that game framework to churn out games, I always have to start from scratch each time which is very time consuming - but you do learn a lot doing it this way.

I really like AGK for a variety of reasons, but sometimes it really annoys me...And personally I really need to be fully happy and comfortable with a language/engine to show full commitment to it.  I think I've found the perfect (for me) answer, so I'll work on that and might actually get a game in for the next competition lol.

oh, me me me <jumping up and down>
First we have 3d and not to 3d. Anything to do with 3d is a pain in the butt. but I can see how things like unity/unreal and agk are making that a simple process.
All of my games with 3d have been more technical that games, but I've learnt a lot from them - particularly that the game MUST have great gameplay and a consistent look/style that grabs you.

2d and particularly retro 2d with limited size and 8bit palette style seems to really hit the spot. If you can find a game in that style then you are onto a winner, so....

My two games that have proved very popular and enjoyable to play and to see other play are:

Viva Mortis. I really want to do something else in this isometric style - it's bloody hard to get right, but it's great fun :)

and

Syntax Bomb
Well it's got to be that one :)

i'm not to sure where I stand really ... I tend to wing it whilst doing a bit of R&D yet still end up with something.
Granted I've made 3 comp games thus far the most favored tends to be the game that was the least hassle to build.

Yes, but what I'm asking for is your personal preference of all your games. Go with a gut-feeling if you can't decide. What I wanted to do was see the people who make the games choose from their own efforts rather than what we normally do, which is judge other peoples.

Steve, I didn't realise you'd not put a game in for a compo yet until you said that and I looked at the lists. I think it's time for that to be rectified next time, even if I have to persuade you into a collaboration so we can kick one dragging and screaming through the finish line :)

I was thinking you might go with SacredLands, surprisingly. That one fucking blew me away when I saw what you'd done in the time-frame. I remember getting told off by Ron for only voting it top in the special prize category rather than the main competition as well. I had just assumed I couldn't do that :)

Sacred lands was great, but people found the controls very hard to get used to.
It was a sort of virus controls that did it...

For me it was ExBiEn but I screwed up with the controls. I'd love an excuse to do a proper sequel.. Perhaps one day.

The big dark adventure for moi.

[edit] The files have been downloaded 39 times.... RESULT 😎😁

(why my most favourite, took me back to Speccy coding, even if it wasn't Speccy coding. And, it was nice to create something akin to the old Hobbit, even if Frodo didn't quite make it into Space)

but for the most part this would have been the most fun game I had made ever... no hassle, no issues, no fuss.

That would be ginger ninja 64 ... for now I guess.

Not my favourite.....but I would have liked to improve A Knights War a lot more....I could do such a better job now.  The fact few liked it is mildly demoralising.

As long as 1 liked it - that's all that matters ;)  Moreover, take satisfaction from having completed something - that in itself is a HUGE achievement.   :D

For me coding-wise the competitions are a sideline project.

I have only made one game, so I guess that one, would have to be my favourite. But that would be kind of self-serving... lol Am I permitted to choose someone else's game?

Yeah, you could, but save it for another thread. I'm thinking that once Qube has finished the results post for current compo then I'll post one where people can nominate their all-time favourite compo game. Probably could do it now but someone might give away a vote for current one, not that it really matters now.

Come on slacker, Qube :-)
