1 Of Us get a good 7drl critique :)
« on: April 30, 2020, 12:53:51 PM »
7drl 2020 has now ended with the results being posted.
There were 210 entries and "1 Of Us" came in at #38 overall which puts it in the top 20%, with fun being rated as #10

The end critique was very interesting with some encouraging comments:

I died in a hilarious way many times. For me, One of Us is a game about discovery, and I had great fun learning game mechanics.

my most is 3 (fleas collected) after some 1-2 hours--and while it's entertaining, I wish it were more explicit in conveying what it is players needed to do to win.

Having to watch an unskippable intro sequence every play did hurt this some for me, and the overall endgame still feels mysterious to me, but not in a way that feels fun. Just telegraphing slightly more obviously what, exactly, the player is supposed to do to catch the flies would go a long way towards making this a solid "4" on the fun scale.

I think I will play this game from time to time, and definitely would like to see new versions in the future.

Interesting and very good food for thought. especially as this was my second attempt at a 7drl. The first being the poorly received "Blood Crypt":

What I will take away from both of these is time, thought and effort. Pretty is one thing, but thought about the why and how will push a game to the next level. I feel I've learnt things and also how to improve and what to avoid.

A good attempt :)

That's pretty good feedback and scoring. Well done, Adam.

What's 7drl? That something like 7 days to make the game, perhaps?

Thanks Xerra - yep "7 day Rogue like" It's a good comp as you can judge how well received different concepts are.

My advice (if you were thinking of entering would be to have a strong idea and have loads of stuff prepared :)

God, no. I'm not up to creating a game in 7 days at the moment. We've had 2 months on current comp and i'm only 60% there. Taken next week off work to zerg the rest of it :)

Congrats, another project out and getting some good feedback!

lol yes I can relate to some of the feedback.  I guess if you know your game inside and out, you may forget to enlighten people who have never played your game even once on what's going on, game-wise.  What might seem obvious to you after many many play-through/de-bugging sessions, won't be the case for the majority of people.
