Module music er, modules
« on: April 28, 2020, 08:42:52 PM »
I’m after recommendations here, folks, if you have any. I’m wondering if there’s a go-to module that…

  • Plays mod music (.mod, .xm, .s3m etc)
  • Lets you set the position within the song (enabling multiple sub-songs that share instruments)
  • Doesn’t require a bundled dynamic lib
  • Features vu-meter functionality (not a must-have)

Naturally I’ve already started working my way through the mod players I’ve been able to find (bass needs a lib, soloud is really neat but the control over playback is lacking), but it seems sensible to ask and potentially cut the time down (or discover there is no such thing!)

I’m harbouring romantic notions of doing the soundtrack for my current lil’ project on the Amiga. Go ahead and break my heart.

Just curious, Why not write your song in any tracker and render it as an mp3 or ogg?

If I bite the file size on oggs then there's not much point doing an arrangement on the Miggy -- might as well render from modern equipment at that point.

As there have been a few dozen views of the thread without anyone being able recommend a particular darling, I might knock this idea on the head. I did notice that SoLoud uses ModPlug, and that there's a bunch of ModPlug functionality that hasn't been scaffolded in as TODOs even, so if I get the time :P I might look into how you're supposed to go about adding them (must be some tutes on wrapping C++ knocking around).

The reason I asked was that you can import a library like LibXM (https://github.com/Artefact2/libxm)  but you'll probably have to do your own audio streaming
like this: https://www.syntaxbomb.com/index.php/topic,5807.0.html
That would meet all of your requirements, but at the end of the day you could just bypass all that work and play an OGG.  The end user would never know.

I wasn't aware of LibXM -- thanks for that.
