Ancient Enemy (my 12th Blitz game) released on Steam today!
« on: April 09, 2020, 04:43:57 PM »
Hi all, I just released Ancient Enemy, our RPG Card Battler on Steam. Here's the store page:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/993790/Ancient_Enemy/

I've been using Blitz since 2005. I made two BlitzPlus games, then everything else was in BlitzMax (including Ancient Enemy) except for an Android game I made in Monkey.

If you feel like helping me signal boost by retweeting my launch tweet, that would be great. Thx!

Looks good - pretty polished as usual for your latest games.

Found some little "odds" (caption of the skeleton is overlaying the character which grows "out of his frame") but else... yay good job by your artist (and you as dev). Also the top-interface text elements look a bit "drawn on top" instead of looking "belonging to the background" (same for the char panel color - maybe it is the "brightness" of the white making me think that way?)

I have some questions as you mentioned to have written in in BlitzMax:
- still BlitzMax "vanilla" or moved on to NG?
- if vanilla: done Mac builds?
- external modules used?
- do you render to texture or how do you handle fading out text on an also fading out panel (vanilla solution: "panel 20% transparent + 20% font transparent" while a proper solution would be draw "group of panel and font" at 20% opacity)? Maybe you animate it that fast that it is not really noticable
- using some custom tools to manage assets (eg creating sprite atlases) etc
- talking of sprite atlases: do you optimize your game in these regards or is it simple "drawImage()" instead of complex sprites based on sprite atlases and all this stuff?

Hope the game does well.

bye
Ron

Hi Blitzplotter!

@Derron Thanks for the feedback. Still on vanilla, so no Mac build. I did experiment with NG and got a 64-bit Mac build running but there were still some issues to resolve + the whole Mac authentication thing which put me off. So yeah no exernal modules/tools, just my framework still working. So no render to texture (but yes, fast fades) and no sprite atlases.

Hey Jake, strangely enough I was re-watching (well we're on lockdown and sometimes we get thrown a 'recommandation' or two ;) ) a YouTube you put out giving advice on going indie...Well if the coding takes a dip, go into comedy...Some great timing there.  As polished as ever, good luck with the game.

Thanks all!

Hi Steve, ah yeah that talk was pretty popular. I did practice it a lot but also tried to keep it natural feeling. It did turn out pretty funny which is good. Also it was 4 years ago and I'm still. Into my 15th year now.

Well you can't ask for much more than that, getting paid for doing something you enjoy.

My Mrs started a new job working from home - on a Mac, she's back in Windows land now - not a Mac fan!

Your framework was/is awesome! Its about the only thing I managed to create something half way decent with in Blitzmax  ;D

Awesome thanks! I hope she enjoys it.
Fairway Solitaire and Puzzle Quest are two of her favourite games, so this was a no-brainer.

And yes, it's early yet but it's very much received two thumbs up.  Nicely done again.

superbly done. Kudos to the art. everything just works.

I really like the painted backgrounds and how the cards don't fight with them. Mention must also be made of the cards themselves - just brilliant artwork throughout.
