We really should have a competition archive area rather than old forum threads.

Just throwing this out there now that the latest competition is done and dusted and we're in the lull before another one gets decided. I know it's a lot of work but I think it would be fantastic for either the Syntaxbomb site itself or another dedicated site linked that covers the history of the competitions thus far. This got discussed elsewhere, and I think Qube did say he was planning to do this, so consider this a nudge.

I'd love to do it myself and I'd turn over an area of either one of my wordpress sites to do it, but I'm crap at anything beyond basic images and text areas so wouldn't do a very good job of it.

I think with a bit of consultation - and a few conditions such as the old games being hosted on itch so they can be located, and in their original submitted format - then this could work. People that updated their old games after the competitions finished could just offer both versions on their Itch page, for example?

Thoughts?

+1
I was just thinking about this today, although a page with all the competition entries of every competition should be here at SyntaxBomb, and not spread across several websites.

Qube must drop a line what is possible to get included in this "forum software"-layout-thing - some kind of special page (similar to "help" or "gallery"). Give us a "div-container" and a CSS to use - and we could wrap up the page with placeholders to fill then by a php script or so.

Yes it's on my to-do list but at the moment I've not the time to do it :( soon soon I hope.

The idea I had is to have a sticky post in the competitions section with all the games listed from newest to oldest and update it after every competition. All the games would have a local copy hosted here rather than linking to itch.io pages. That way if someone closes down their itch.io page then things don't get lost.

A layout I had in mind is something like :

Desription : Conquer the galaxy ...  by sending ships from your planet to others. Easy peasy isn't it?
Use your mouse to select planets and target enemy planets to set your ships free. Once the population counter of a planet goes below 0 - it will change ownership.
Owned planets generate Research Points (RP) which you can use to upgrade your tech tree on the knowledge hub.
Ah and you might want to buy some missiles as planetary defense of each planet.

And so on, etc etc.

Something simple and easy to scroll through. Unless others have something more extravagant in mind?

That's all it needs really.  A heading (graphic) for the Competition Name, with some information on each game, a screenshot and download link.  Repeat for each competition.

You should be able to create a thread with the newest post being on top. That way you could have a "qube only" thread containing rhem nicely sorted.

What Steve said.... "BUMP"

Reckon we could publicise the competitions a lot more if we had a focused forum thread with the games from each competition listed with the results. Could possibly also make them read only so they don't get cluttered. The individual games usually have their own threads from when they were being created.

Sorry, I've had pretty much nil free time to do any hobby coding let alone the competition page / thread.

Xerra ( or anyone ) - If you're interested in doing it I'll happily create a special hidden section + FTP for images / files where you create it all up in your own time and when ready I can move and sticky it in the Game Comps thread? - The forum has enough features like tables / images etc to create a nice simple looking easy to follow format.

Let me know :)

I hung some basic stuff together in HTML5 for the 8-bit wars, and by the looks of things - I might just need some minor modification to my last webpage for that compo for a new one for this one.

I appreciate the work Qube does laready maintaining this forum - I never would've dusted off my old coding mojo / had it re-invigorated if it weren't for these competitions.

Now where'd I put that old web page code stuff - I know its residing on my old dead computer. (The one that died during 8-bit wars....). I'm defo getting access to the drives from that - today is purchase a second hand desktop day to plug my mothballing hard drives in - and implement a half decent archiving system.

Dual motherboard/CPU raided up - that kinda set-up should go for a decade or two...... right?  Only a three disk raid - I'm not made of money! ;D

Just downloaded firefox again - whilst employed as a software release manager / tester / coder a few years back - I recalled it'd a decent web page analysis function.
