Ya! I grew up watching both those guys kick ass in films. I still have all the DVD's. Those films, Commando, Rambo, Total Recal etc just do not get old.
I thought the CGI in Terminator Salvation was quite cool. That Arnold CGI looked pretty damn authentic. I guess though, with current tech, that will look dated and I'm hoping we will see a few surprises in the new Terminator CGI wise.

They won't be perfect - but our brains get trained to more and more "accept" stuff.
Just think of all the CGI scenes in the marvel movies - normally you would think they are computer generated but the more you get used to these surreal scenes the more you think it is "ok" or "looks as it should look".

If CGI stuff became "realistic" (and therefor we reached a level in which stuff can get automated and even animation could be done by the AI) you would see that porn industry would skip paying some bucks for "too lazy for school but too beautiful for a serious job" girls.

They _look_ old. And as long as rambo keeps his clothes on it will still be a "bastard kicks butts" movie. Terminator -- think the franchise is borked since the last movies.
Bruce Willis only appears in some cheap DTV movies (pays his bills, gives way more sparetime than blockbusters and allows him to eat at the buffets - he said!).
Man I even liked Dolph and Jean-Claude years ago but think the times of "straight action"-movies is long long gone (just check out how cheap these Scott Adkins movies are - not to talk about Steven Seagal)

As said the time of these movies is fixed to the 80s until mid 90s - then the "image" of the perfect male action star changed and people wanted strong woman (not muscles!). Also story telling improved in many aspects. Some stuff of the 80s just would not work these days (even with up-to-date effects).

Just check how "sexual harassing" some movies are.


Aside of above: Arnie was the action star of my youth - Enjoyed almost every of his movies (except Herkules ...) until he became governour. Cannot imagine how I feel once one of these "stars of my youth" is no more.

Ahhh, Jean Claude and Dolph. I still have their movies on DVD also. Kickboxer and AWOL featuring Jean Claude are still my favourites.

You're right about our brains getting trained to more and more accept stuff. I remember watching Toy Story in the 90's and thinking to myself, those CGI graphics look awesome. But, like you say, our brains get trained to accept more and more stuff as normal.

People didn't insist on strong woman instead of strong men. A lot of that is just a current trend and being pushed by the PC and SJW brigade with a whiff of "Down with all men!". 

Besides we've had strong women in films for decades, Ripley in Aliens, Leia in Star Wars, Sarah Conor in Terminator, Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, Geena Davis in The Long Kiss Goodnight to name but a fraction. It's not new, it's just now being a requirement in some instances, like the huge song and dance about the female lead Ghostbusters film. Why do we need a song and dance about females in movies? Is it new?

Haven't we had female driven movies for years which didn't require great praise being heaped on as forward thinking? and in fact a lot of excellent ones too. Apart from the above there's The Hunger Games, Underworld, The Craft, Resident Evil ( just the first one ), G.I. Jane etc etc etc, the list goes on and on.

During the last decade more and more "woman as main actor"-action-a-like movies appeared yes.
And also in the decades before we had strong lead characters here and there.

I was talking about the action flicks - only action heroines of the 80s I can remember in this very moment are Cynthia Rothrock - and Sigourney Weaver for Alien. But who else?

Think the "horror-survival"-genre allowed woman to also show of some action skills - in the sense of "tough girls" who survive the worst horror monsters. Think you know enough of these movies - in most of them it's the woman who survives, not her husband, boy friend, ...
Yet these movies are far from the "actioners" in the 80s (big g'uns, one-liners, cracking necks and bones).

Yes, today's lead characters are allowed to be gay or to be a sociopath or something else "not to be seen during the 80s". During that time being divorced was what our heros were allowed to be - maybe a bit alcohol addicted but else? Those real "complex" characters won't be found in the movies we liked so much.
Nowerdays we've got the internet and the so called "shit storms" (just think of it - literally ... uargh). It is so easy to release such a storm and people voluntarily cower - because else their head is "chopped" by their financers because the movie now was a box office desaster (which most often would happen without the "shit storm" too - because they already did some stuff during production to avoid potential "shit storms"). So the bigger a movie budget is - the more "secure" they drive their production.
LGBT character on board? Check.
Woman in one of the leading roles? Check.
Person with character/serious-history in lead or assistant role? Check.
No pursued minitory as antagonist? Check.
...

Somehow I understand that - the budgets of movies are way three digit million for blockbusters. You need to be "likeable" by an as big as possible audience. If you did a rough-actioner  you will loose a big portion of the potential audience - lowering the total gross of these movies. So if you want star power + effects + all the tam tam then you need to sacrifice "character" of your movie and add a bit "trend conformity".

We now just have to wait until the trends change again - let's see what to expect next.

In the early eighties I used to go to a buddies house because his nan didn't mind us watching 18 rated video's that I couldn't see at home. Also we had Beetamax back then, which was already a dying format due to VHS, unfortunately.

The first time I saw "The Terminator" - a supposedly low-budget straight to video film - I was absolutely blown away by how good a story it was. Obviously Arnie wasn't a great actor but he just fit the film and it was so well made I'd have expected to see it in the cinema. Me and my buddy were so impressed we went to the cinema the following weekend to watch "Commando" rather than wait for a dodgy VHS to do the rounds.

Ahh, what a film that was too. That self-repairing Porsche between scenes has become the stuff of legend among movie gaffs. But nobody cared as it was such an entertaining film to watch.

Not too sure I could pick my favourite Arnie film - probably T2 at a push - but his earlier roles were significantly better, when he really kicked arse.

Arnie has great screen presence. One of those things that can't be taught. I've enjoyed many of his films from "Terminator" to "Jingle all the way" to "Escape Plan". Decades of fun films that you can just sit down and have fun watching.

T2 is a top notch action film and Robert Patrick did a brilliant job playing the T1000. Probably one of the finest displays making a big budget movie the right way. Not sure I could just pick out one favourite Arnie film to be honest

The recent female Ghostbusters wasn't too bad, yeah, I love all the terminator, Rocky films, Dolph Lundgren versus Sly, great stuff .
