It doesn't make a difference to the actual final result but there's an error with the total for Santa Fantasma. He scored 400 - the same points as Spirit for Christmas - when tallied up, not 500. However, Santa Fantasma got two 1st place votes, compared to the one that Spirit of Christmas received, so would be ranked as 2nd place.

Sorry, the analyst in me coming out again :-)

Well done everyone - I'm looking forward to seeing what the next competition will be.

Qube: I don't have a paypal account, and I'm not sure coming last justifies a prize, so please plough mine back into the account for the next competition. I only did it for a bit of fun, anyway.

Best wishes,

D

the same as daihard, feel free to put the santafantazma's winnings back into the next prize pot ... it's fine.
:)
It's a thing that doe's when it don't..

Spot on!, yeah I added up wrong :o - This is what happens when I'm in a hurry and mix up 3rd and 2nd place scores. Luckily the end result works out the same \o/ - I will take my time on the next comp to not screw up basic math ;D

That's very generous of you. A win is a win and you made the effort to submit a game so hats off to you. Do you have any other payment method? it would be good to have some options for future comps. But will add your win to the next prize fund.

That's very generous of you too :) - Works out nicely for the next comp which will be announced very soon and will be the biggest prize fund so far and hopefully get the juices flowing for us old folks.

@Xerra - Thanks for your details. I'll zip over the funds later today after I've had some such needed sleep. Well done to all that entered :)

Grats to all competitors, this was a good one. Cool games.

QuoteFor next compo: back to the generator script? Maybe this time we should really plan time span 2 weeks ahead so that there could be a little "ad posts" on other forums to attract people.
I think I'll just make something up for the next comp. Not sure about posting on other forums about the comp as admins could consider it spamming or fishing for members. Usually members of X forum would post about the comp. Also, the nature of the comp won't be know before it's posted so naughty people can't start two weeks earlier than others.

I was more talking about "hey dudes - another compo is starting - similar to the last ones theme is yet to get revealed but I am sure it will be fun again". So no real promo but only a thread by regular users of that forum. Eg. the users could write about their particular project there too. So people get aware of the compo ("reason of creating this particular game") without getting forced to visit this page here. But if someone is interested (eg. a coder too) then he might follow the links and post here or even join.

It is not about a pure advertisement - just some kind of hmm "awareness increasing approach".

Sure, if members here are members of other places that may be interested then post away :)

EDIT : If anyone is doing this then I recommend doing it now as the next comp will likely be posted next weekend.

A hearty congratulation to the winners of this Christmas competition!

They are great entries.

On the other hand, an effective way may be needed to attract more entrants to the future competitions.

I agree. It would be nice to have more entries. The "adventure" theme seemed to peek interest but I think when it came to actually creating a game interest was lost pretty fast. Downside of asking you lot that is :P

Perhaps the comps need a rest for a while. Derron suggested advertising on other forums and although I posted that a new comp would be this weekend I don't think anyone has followed through with Derron's suggestion and posted on forums they freqeunt in order to gain more visibility?

It's also pretty quiet here on SB at the moment ( as is on other boards too ), so perhaps leave the comps for now until activity picks up and general interest is there.

Or take the time to ... what I suggested already: pimp the previous competition results. Promote them, give them a extra page for increased awareness.

Maybe we have designers among us - who want to create a little "banner/image" for the compo (useful for "advertising"). Of course theming is a bit "surprise surprise" there, so it must be a bit generic ("syntaxbomb compo" instead of "theme").

Another thing we (or just I ;-)) had as idea somewhen was writing a AI. So a finished little game with script-support could be used to have a little AI competition.

Someone here would have to take up that task :) - Any volunteers?

Usually the comps are posted on other forums by the members of that community. Personally I'm not into the whole weeks / months long preamble of promoting a comp as that wastes valuable coding time :P - Also the comp theme / rules would never be released before launch day so as you say, if anyone was to help promote them then it would have to be generic.

I can't see how that would work based on all the varying engines that people use. Also you can't assume that everyone could do such things.

Is anyone genuinely up for another comp? or should they be left to rest for a while?

@ varying engines
then create some API thing ... a DLL with what people could interact or so. Nonetheless, was just an idea which someone can give another spin until it turns into something useful.

@ promotion
Maybe post about your previous finished games - and for what reason you wrote them ("indirect advertisement").

@ pimped pages
What do you need, generic structure, whole design, some gfx, ... ? Feel free to open up a new thread for this, maybe others have ideas for this too.

bye
