2019 - What's your goals?

Here we are. Another year older and another year wiser ( yeah right ).

Let's create a blog for our dreams and aims for 2019.

My goals :

1.. Spend more time learning Unity. It's a love hate relationship as the designer in me loves it but the coder in me hates it. Unity has a very bad rep as being a simple drag and drop system to create games and as soon a you say "I made this is Unity" then they think your game was super simple to create. I don't mind that side as I just like making games. Then again part of me hates it as all the effort you put in results in "Nice drag and drop work!". However this side is from coders, but the people that would buy your game don't even think about such things.... End of rant ;D

2.. Finish off my tools and framework for AGK. I love AGK but as a pure coding environment I need to create a better work flow for games. I've made a small progress during 2018 but there's still a lot more to do. Recently AGK has become a little broke in certain areas. I hope this is fixed as a priority in early 2019 as I do love a pure coding environment.

3..  Spend time with Cerberus on the AGK side. The Cerberus team have done a great job with updating Monkey and although I loathe what Mark Sibly has done with the whole Blitz community I have great admiration for the Cerberus team.

4.. Learn 3D animation. I've dabbled with this side a few times but never learned the ins and outs of rigging and animating. It's a side I want to learn so this is on my 2019 list.

5.. Create music.. It's been a few years since I've spent time creating tunes and I miss that side. Sure I've created a few tunes for the games I've done in the coding comps but they were all rushed due to time constants. Would be nice if I made the time to compose some tunes. I'm not great at creating music but its something that I enjoy doing.

6.. Make games with a super secret project. I can't say any more than that but with a bit of luck it's going to be an interesting year ;D

Over to you rabble. What's your aims for 2019?. Doesn't have to be code related but let's create a year long thread about your aims and achievements as it'd be cool to see how we all pan out over 2019 :)

Happy New Year ;D

1. Get to February with both body and mind in good health.
2. If achieve 1, then see if there's a way to gain a 'life'.
3. If 2 not possible then continue existing for 2 more years before reviewing again.

1. Make and release something instead of only doing contract work.

I've managed to finish three games this year - and failed one - which have all been competition games. Logic says that I should try and aim for doing a bigger, better game without the pressure of deadlines for next year, but I think that would actually not work for me. I've never been that great at getting stuff done until more recent years so I  think the deadlines actually help me become a bit more focused. So I don't think I'd try anything more ambitious than a compo game, if they continue, next year.

I do want to have another crack at doing some coding for maybe application or tools rather than just games next year, though. I would probably go back to Xcode and have another crack at Swift, as I don't think I gave it enough time and switched to GameMaker pretty quickly a couple of years back.

As for outside of hobby programming, I'm still debating wether to carry on running, as i'm getting too old for all that now. I didn't start doing anything like that until I actually hit 40, so I was already battling against age and weight. I did three runs this year and got 2 medals and a t-shirt for my trouble. None of them were a distance bigger than 10k but I keep kidding myself that maybe one day I'll actually get a spot in the London Marathon ballot after applying for 8 of the last 10 years.

I think I'll try one more time in April to see if I make the vote so maybe a couple of small runs this year as well.

I'm hoping for a new job offer this January. Have to have a "little chat" when I return to current job next week and make sure there's no conflict of interest with my current employers because they contract for us. That would result in a lot of home working, better money and a good system to support if it comes off, so here's hoping.

Also hoping that my beloved Queens Park Rangers continue to make progress and actually get close, if not achieve, a play-off position out of the Championship this season.

My 12 year old nephew has started playing Chess now and I was pretty good at that in my youth. I'm thinking of getting back into playing that again so I can make sure the little git can't beat me :-)

Good health, a fridge full of beer, my car not breaking down too often, my cat to be as daft as ever. Not too much to wish for, I hope.

1. Learn Lumberyard.  Even though it is time-consuming to download and install, I think in a few years, it might even surpass Unreal.
Learn python for Blender,  Lua for Lumberyard.

2. Already know Unity enough to create games for it, just have to find time to actually sit down and code. Since my research points out that SPI's Universe game is in the public domain, I plan on coding that in Unity this year.  <Should I create a workblog on this forum about my results, because the codebase seems Blitz3d and Monkey X>

3.  At least release a game this year.  I know the Torque game engine like the back of my hand. I doing a simple game that can be coded in 1 month that can be played within 20 minutes using that engine.  I got the inspiration from $3.00 games like Crypt of the Serpent King,  and Masked Forces.
Prepare to be assimilated !  Resistance is futile!

I can get by that. I'd love to write some music, it's been years since I last tried that. It can be quite an intellectual challenge  surprisingly, what with all the music theory you can resort to.
But I want to keep it simple: just MIDI arrangements with the default Windows soundbank, no fancy sampled libraries.
If your arrangement sounds awesome in pure MIDI then it'll sound awesome when you produce it in a DAW with fancy samples.

Happy new year gents, live long and prosper

I need to settle on a framework or language and then actually finish a game. I am playing around with AGK and GM studio 2.

On a personal note need to get my weight back down and I am going to start Keto diet/low carb in the early new year. Start walking and swimming again to help with the weight loss.

I also need to spend more time on my drawing skills.

..happy new year everyone..my plan is simple,

1) Designing a drone (electronics, firmware, remotes and basically whole thing in several designs) and start selling it , and doing so as a business, not a hobby../working on it already/
2) ..to be seen..

:D

happy new year @all.

I am planning to complete my education or start anew.(IT specialist - subject area: coding)
And maybe on this way i need to change the place where i live.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Well it's 8PM here so I'm a bit late :)

Goals:

1. Complete 2 casual games this year...

2. Learn Blender

3. Move my Android based games over to LibGDX

human life related :
->try to stay alive ;)
->keep experimenting with my diet / habits / devices to repair my body more quickly than it ages ( i am a little crazy i know  :P )
->improve my self reliance for the difficult times which will (most likely) happens, where i live...
->go out more often, and experiment with body / face / gestures communication, to "break the ice" with unknown people and create new relationships (talk less, act more (with tact))
->read / listen to / watch more books / audios / videos with useful tips for real life. (less fiction / entertainment, more useful practical stuff for "real" life)

work / money related :
->continue to do manual works, faster / better, so that i can earn enough money but also have enough free time to do what i really want.
->continue to make devices which are useful and better than existing devices, and that some people are (most likely) ready to buy (on ebay) ( for fun, and as a potential additional income)

programming / electronics related :
->use my (game making) programming understanding to learn / experiment more with electronic circuits (arduino, raspberry)
->code a real-time texels lighting / shading system, never seen before in any video game 8) , the automatic (optimised) uvmapping (with uniform texel size) being the challenge that i have not solved yet in my mind...

oh, but i arleady do all of this, so nothing will change, i will just continue and become better... ;D

happy new year, and good luck in your endeavors !
