Greetings folks...

I've put together in the last three days outside of work a new game called 'Galaxius'.

It is one of those strategy games that are commonly found on mobile where the player(s) generate ships on planets and send them against other planets and try to outspeed the AI player in taking over the map.

It has three level of difficulty and four factions.

It is very unpolished but the gameplay is identical to what it would be were it more polished.

My neighbour who is not a gamer played it and did quite well.  I just had my first win on easy against the computer.

Pretty neat little concept, anything sci-fi immediately snags my interest. I only wish that I had a bit more direct control over what is happening but that's likely beyond the scope of what you wanted to achieve with this game.

Very impressive for a few day work :o Neat concept and one you should develop into a larger game.
Mac Studio M1 Max ( 10 core CPU - 24 core GPU ), 32GB LPDDR5, 512GB SSD,
Beelink SER7 Mini Gaming PC, Ryzen 7 7840HS 8-Core 16-Thread 5.1GHz Processor, 32G DDR5 RAM 1T PCIe 4.0 SSD
MSI MEG 342C 34" QD-OLED Monitor

Until the next time.

The concept is - as Matty already stated - known from many other games. So developing will make it unnecessary complex - or it will at least change gameplay so much that it becomes a different kind of game (which I do not say will be a bad thing...).

The basic idea of such a game is so "small" that it could be one of the "I am no longer a beginner"-type of games people try to program:
- different bases ("planets", "mother cells", ...)
- re-ammunition ("ships", "cells", "knights", ...)
- bullet/ship movement (one of the basics people like to do ;-))
- a very basic AI (what enemy base to select)

What ideas do you others have for such a game to "improve" it without changing too much - so no fortifying planets, no upgraded ships, ...?

bye

I wouldn't take it to the staggering level complexity of Space Empires IV.

But I do feel like if a more streamlined and simplistic 4x game would be a nice niche to cater to. The biggest flaw of 4x games is the late game grind and time consuming nature of the genre. While not a grand 4x game a lessor known gem called Deadlock comes to mind, because it feels both easy to pickup and learn yet complex enough to hold my interest without being a burden. It's a great example of being a lighter turn based strategy game.

This is also worth a look: Metal Marines.

Again further developing Galaxius is likely far beyond the authors intentions for this game. Even if in his dev log he wanted to do a lot more but he felt it affected the pacing too much... However after playing a bit of his lite RPG/Dungeon hack "The Young Prince" he is clearly heading toward larger and more complex games.
