Does anybody knows a program like substance painter or bodypaint3d for painting on models direct on the texture?

I've been getting to grips with texture painting in Blender (v2.79), which is free.

Quite a learning curve though!

I forget to say...without Blender  :o
btw.: i take a look at the 2.80 but .... its Blender.... ;)

Derron

but ... it's Blender?!

coz ... it's Blender!
For hand-painted textures it is pretty good (in emergency save the texture and edit externally).

Here are some untested alternatives to substance painter:

Thx.
Armorpaint seems to be very good. But its not free(costs only 16bucks)
I´ll test it all.

Derron

Ahh, thought it was free as it was used together with Armory (a Blender game kit). If you like the node based approach of Armorpaint then just use Blender, it offers nodes too - in other words: it is pretty powerful.

Only things you do not get is all these "dynamic materials" things you have with Substance Painter - and the "layer based approach". You need to do them "by hand" in Blender. Time savings with Substance Painter come with a price :-)

Maybe it is cheaper for you to sign in into a open/distance university (eg. in Germany we had one for about 5€/semester).

Of course you can then only use it for personal education. If you plan to earn money with things you might consider paying for the tools too.

If you own a Photoshop Licence (I doubt that - as then the licence for Substance Painter is just "another few bucks") then you could try
https://quixel.se/suite2/
as it "only" costs $79.

Of course I am also awaiting a FOSS solution similar to Substance Painter, but for now it seems to be nothing in the making :(

On my first look i thought it was free too.
Btw. i hate Blender but i want to learn it...maybe.Atm i use for little models AC3D.

I had in past a Photoshop subscription. But now i use Affinity Paint and Designer.
But Quixel looks good.

But for now i have to decide for any.I get no younger ;)

"Maze Raider" textures got all painted right in Blender. If you only need simple BumpMapping/NormalMaps and Albedo ("color texture") then you will happily do it in Blender (once you got the hang to it).

Substance Painter is more for the "PBR"-look - so "realistic stuff". If you want a "WarCraft-toonish-look" then go with handpainted stuff and Blender (or 3D-Tool + Affinity-Painting-Toolchain).

It seems that i need more hands on blender...or bforartist(if anybody knows that)

Derron

bforartists... While I appreciate the works of Reiner (some of you might remember his tilesets - and the games he has done with them) I prefer to use "Blender" as I am used to many shortcuts ("am used to hit b,g,r..."). With 2.8 Blender will receive some overhauled GUI (with way more icons for all those icon-lovers in the world).

So _I_ would suggest to try out the 2.8 test versions and if that suits to you then stay with it. Bforartists imho offers a different "view" to the underlaying elements. Some need this help, others wont. It is up to you and your way of doing things - or learning things. So for Blender you will find a _lot_ of tutorials with some already being outdated (Blender 2.5 or so) and harder to follow along or unnecessary "complex" as newer features already contain stuff which needed workarounds in the past. Still elementary tutorials ("How to handpaint stuff" - means lighter areas, darker areas, where to put "shadow" to make it look like a bump ...) work regardless of toolset or versions.
