Keyboards

If you played chess for 8hrs a day I guess the "wooden piece"-character will get more and more unimportant. So you most often get used to the keyboard you use. To stay with your analogy: as long as you can distinguish a bishop from a pawn you won't have problems. As long as your fingers feel if they hit the cursor keys or the space bar you won't have problems too.

Keyboards are the toolset of computer users. They need to perfectly fit to the user for a perfect and efficient result. Nonetheless a good craftsman can hit nails with almost any hammer (not talking about sledge hammers or so ;-)).

No, the tactile nature of a real chess piece or a good keyboard gives a more satisfying feel and inspires use.  The same could be said of a game controller vs a touch screen.

Proper touch of objects - physical objects - like a chess piece, like a coffee mug or cup, or a pen or a pencil are focuses of the mind. They are a grounding agent into the real world - so much better than what a interface on a touch screen can provide.

of course it helps to "feel" a piece. But as said: think of yourself playing chess each day for 8+ hours. Somewhere it is no longer the experience of having a pawn in the hand, it is just a "move pawn from e2 to e4" decision. As soon as it becomes a "routine" the details of the work get less and less important, only the results count.

Nothing for me has ever felt as satisfying as an old mechanical keyboard. Corsair make some pretty nice keyboards but I'm quite happy with my brand-new AT keyboard from 1988. It even came mounted within a metal rack at no extra charge! Thanks ebay!

Nice. The only thing worse to type on than a laptop-style keyboard, is an 80's ZX Spectrum keyboard.   :D

Clacky keys and you feel productive as you rattle away noisily, typing in your code.

I can mildly forgive the ZX spectrum because it has an awesome name and it was the 80s. I swear that clacking keys help you be more accurate and precise, I can feel the mild difference in each key and the subtle different clocks between different keys. But the most satisfying to hit will always be the space bar.

Yes, the Spectrum rocked.  Clacky keys and you feel and hear every touch - very satisfying.
