Steam has this thing going on where it is giving you badges and stuff like that for playing some of the older games on your system - or even games you've got on your account that you've never actually played. I'm guilty as hell on that one as I used to be rather fond of the odd bundles package that do the rounds for a quid a pop, or similar. I'm even still a humble monthly subscriber even though I really only play most games on the PS4.

Anyway, to get to the point, one of the achievements is to actually play the first game you ever put on your Steam account. Mine - like most peoples - turned out to be Half Life 2. I remember getting through most of the first game back in 1998 but I don't think I ever actually completed it. Now maybe it's a memory thing but I can't actually remember playing HL2 much back when I first got it - 2004 or so, I think. So, just for nostalgia, I installed the thing again and played for the first time in probably 10+ years.

For an old game it's still brilliant even now. Sure, it's a bit dated, and the manipulating objects is a bit quirky compared to more recent games, but the enemy AI is still spot on and it's genuinely tense playing it. The fact that I've forgotten everything about it just makes it better as I can run through it all again.

Makes me think of all those old games I played to death when I was a bit younger that could maybe do with a revisit.

One of my favorite games along with HL2: Eps 1 & 2.  Still come back to them every now and then to replay.  Also love Portal 1&2, which were bundled with HL2 when you bought the boxed set, or get them bundled on Steam like I did.

Ya, agreed. Cult classic of a game. Thanks for the linky. Downloading now.

It's a real shame we won't see a Half Life 3 until we have plugs in the back of our necks. For that TOTAL VR experience. XD

i've been playing the graphical updated version - smooth as butter and pure brilliance :)

I agree,

While Valve are making money they never will make #3. They are too scared to put in the effort required to follow up HL2. I mean imagine if they goofed it up... all of hell would break loose. Sadly as usual... all companies give a stuff about is money (and not anyone else funnily enough, we're just the means of their goal), so Valve is cutting its losses, keeping the money (it gets from other revenues), keeping its reputation and in the meantime the fans lose out.

Yes 'playing it safe' rather than striving for something that could sell millions.  Nothing ventured nothing gained, how sad.
