Managed to get some time to work on this over the weekend.

I wanted the control to be similar to Steambirds but taking into account your current speed / acceleration / braking so it takes 2-3 turns to get up to full speed.  The faster you go the less you can turn so you have to be careful to plan ahead.  Control wise - you tell the vehicle the target turning angle, the target speed and set the general direction that you want your roof mounted machine gun to aim and hit go.  Each turn covers 2 seconds of game time.  All the AI will move as you do and if anything is within your machine gun arc you'll fire at it.  We'll see how well this turns out in practice but you can move about and aim so far.

The cars will have Armour and (if time permits) other weapons like front fixed guns and missiles and ability to drop mines.  I plan on having pickups such as double damage / handbrake turn / shield / booster which can be used at the start of any turn.

The plan is to have a set number of campaigns with progressively harder and more/different enemies and procedurally generated terrain.  The movement will be on a flat plane for simplicity.  The mountains cannot be traversed and going in the water will kill you.  I don't plan on having many other hazards - maybe the odd rock or suchlike.

Probably a bit ambitious so we'll see how it goes.  A couple of WIP screenshots ..

Those cars remind me of the old Amiga super skidmarks back in the day.

Hmm, I'm not seeing much of a retro / strategy vibe here. I think I'm going to need an exclusive alpha version to play. You know, just to make sure it's comp rule compliant :)) - Anyone fall for that?... anyone?... anyone?

Even if the game would get excluded from the competition for failing in the genre-mix: I assume most of us here want to play it ;-)

To me it definitely fits into the "retro" look / genre of yonder + the description has great strategic elements. Inspires me to want to enter but must stick to finishing my framework :) - see you all next time around :))

Hi, I remember your game Van Tourisimo. Van Tourisimo is the 1st place winner of the retro game competition.

Actually, I have much confidence in Wasteland Warriors now.

Been working on the level generation today.  Wrote a quick and dirty pseudo random number generator so that I can store a load of levels using just the seeds and they'll look the same on every computer.  There's a decent variety and although levels could be better they are enough to use for testing gameplay.  I might revisit if I get the time ...

Also have collisions working - at the moment if you're on the edge of the water you'll slide in and die.  Avoid at all costs  ;D
