Why so many steps - tracert?

Hi folks,

Is this normal for a route to a website to take so many hops over international US destinations to get to a European host from Australia?

It all depends on the peering.

For A to reach B they need to have a peering with all the "connectors" (backbones to the internet). So if the shortest path between A to B goes over C, some longer paths will route over D and another one over E. It takes: the fastest path available. And availability is defined by whether they are peering with C, D and/or E. In this case they (your provider - or its "parent") might not peer with "C" and therefor need to take route D or E with which they peer.

if it helps.

And the list there (of their routers) ... there is "amsterdam", "frankfurt", "munich", "vienna", "sofia" ... and now look at the router domain names (muc03.atlas.cogentco.com - for munich). They traverse you through their own network until they reach an "external" provider to which they have to peer (which costs money or exchanged traffic).

Well, that might be not be the case at all.
I've heard people say things they couldn't know on many occasions. Weird.

Even had my gf thinking I spoke to people about private stuff only her and me knew, and vice versa. But for both of us wasn't so. You almost would think colleagues bugged or hacked phones or so, but wasn't possible in some cases.
Telling you: weird stuff is going on, messing with our heads sometimes. Just don't fall in the trap of focusing too much on it.
