>I honestly think companies like facebook and twitter have genuinely been screwing up our societies

well they seemed to have drained the smaller anonymous forums of activity. But apart from a few minor things, I think the effect is positive. Twice been involved with lost pets, and both times they were found rapidly via facebook. Couldn't do that too easy b4 facebook, unless u go back 60 years when everyone knew everyone in the town.

The divorce rate in britain, increasing for decades before social media, began decreasing as social media became more popular. Women love posting themselves and their families on social media. Social media reinforces old conhesive values : pride ( hey look at my nice family! ), social standing ( look at <friend> nice family, I want to be like that! ) and  responsible behaviour ( if I mess up in life, everyone on social will find out, so I'll make sure I don't mess up ).

Even considering the negative subversive side of fb i.e. the collecting and compiling of data to give to governments, spreading thought control, its still arguable the net effect is positive for the simple and honest 3 effects listed above.

Meems, I read the exact opposite. That due to facebook ex partners can often stalk their old partners. And due to facebook people continually have to show how happy they are and often couples break up because a partner may be so obsessed with using facebook rather than spending time with their actual partner/family.

Sure looking for a lost pet. That would of course be useful, that's though in a way a completely difference service, more like twitter. You socialise on facebook but it can be used for non social things.

I clicked the permanent delete button, just need to wait another week (need to wait two weeks without login before it lets you, I guess psychologically they want you to feel the need to go back and you "change your mind")

Topic title - no.

@Meems, those three points - I agree.

For co-ordinating sporting activities for youths it is excellent, just create a 'private group' and there you go.

Yep, it can be used for data mining, but don't post stuff on there you don't want data mined.
Simples. :P
