Just stumbled across this and WOW, just WOW: https://urho3d.github.io/

If you're familiar with C++ and like coding, I doubt you will find something better. It's cross platform btw.

The only thing lacking are simple ways of draw 2d primitives as far as I can see.

Yes Urho3D is nice and I think much better than than some of the other open source 3D offerings. The build instructions I think are a little of a mess for Android; still using old NDK/SDK and ant.
