I could quite easily define the ships in code but I'd like to upgrade the look of them while still keeping the wireframe look.

Can I hire someone to do this if I have a rough sketch of what I want?

Or is there a free editor for the job? (Assume I know nowt)

Are you willing to pay $50 to $100 USD per hour, then yes you can find people willing to model them. There will be 3d artists in your own city. They will charge that or more per hour.
