I suppose that you are talking about writing/reading temporary/config files in the USER directories ?

The best example is when a setup program or user (or network admin) installs your application into C:\Program Files. Your user may not be a local administrator, so writing to a config file, savestate or temp file in the program directory will probably fail. The same goes for the root of the C: drive and /opt in Linux etc.

Knowing where to put that temp file ( don't always assume C:\temp) or where user data should be saved can be a bit of a nightmare, but luckily Brucey has a good module that can help.
