Has anyone looked at NaaLaa before? It's way over it's prime and no-longer gets any updates nor maintains a healthy community of users but what attracted me to it was how easy it was to make games using Raycasting and even Doom like map generation. It even comes with a useful Raycast level editor.

Can anyone recommend anything that's a bit more popular that I can easily create old school raycast/billboarding style pseudo 3D?

GW

There was a guy [Tophat Demon] who made a full raycaster game in Naalaa, and later made a sequel in Blitzmax.
The naalaa game was called 'Total Invasion' and the Blitzmax version was called  'Total Invasion II'.
The sourcecode for both should be available with the games.  With modern graphics cards, It's better performance wise to emulate the raycasting with 3d and primitive quads.  I would recommend Blitzmax with the Openb3d module.

Here is an example of a raycast dungeon you can use a start point.
