it's not a great system because, while I may have been in proximity to someone who has or is carrying the virus, I could have been well out of range, and only briefly near them, but I'm now restricted as a result.

(disclaimer: I had my 2 biontech shots in early summer)
Just think of you driving in your car ... waiting at a traffic light or in a traffic jam with windows closed and AC cooling down your car. behind you or in another lane you have a car with someone being infected ... also they have closed their windows.

When at home I can receive bluetooth signals of my neighbours devices (same floor or one below/upper) without much problems (pretty good signal strength). My BT 5.0 stick buried below my desk even lists about 20 devices from time to time.

Such stuff might help as _indicator_ but should NOT be used to force you doing something.

There was a woman on a narrow boat had to turn it off... Proximity to 'passers by' was giving her oodles of self isolate notifications!

Yep, exactly this. And I might as well have just ignored this one because, as I pretty much expected, test came back negative for both me and the boss.

Our local council are having lots of people go off sick from work at present due to the app telling them to isolate. The lazy ones are loving it because it doesn't go on their sickness records and they get 10 days off work on full pay. I'm not sure if the rules have changed on the app to say you can ignore the isolate decision if you've been double jabbed, but being double-jabbed still lets you contaminate other people, even if you're not affected, so it's pretty useless to do this. I suspect they made it this way because they couldn't think of any better way to try and limit the spread. The vaccine is their way of trying to limit the spread because isolation isn't really working. A lot of people also just ignored being told to isolate right when lockdown originally started - which didn't help matters.

You could get pinged within 5 mins of walking out of your front door after having done 10 days, and back you go, for heavens sake.

I think the one certain thing we can take from this whole business is that the virus isn't going away at all, never mind any point soon. We'll just be living with it like we do the flu. Hope nothing much nastier comes out of the woodwork because we don't have any good methods of preventing all this happening again.

I got flagged up for the first time on my phone app two days ago, which means someone had the virus within blue-tooth range of me for a while, and have had a test result uploaded onto their own app. It doesn't tell me where I could have been near this person or the date/time, so I've now been told I had to quarantine for 8 days.
sorry for you. bluetooth range is apparently 10meters, which is quite a lot.
what a paranoid and depressing society this is becoming...

in France, people who have been vaccinated can go to places where others people can't anymore (bars, restaurants, hypermarkets, movies, theaters, museums, arcade, etc...) and depending on the place there is no obligation to wear a mask anymore, so the 'viruses' can circulate freely...
which is controversed...
we'll have to wait a few more months to see if these vaccines are significantly helping, or not.

even if everybody would have respected the rules, it is impossible to stop the spread of a 'virus' which is so tiny and so easily spread. and also pointless because 99% of the people have a functional immune system and recover.
even if being sick with the covid symptoms can be harsh, i admit it, especially the coughs, the difficulty to breath, the fatigue, the foggy mind, the headaches. ???

In terms of reducing hospitalizations and serious illness, I think it's pretty clear vaccines are significantly helping.

For example, the NY Times recently published an analysis (using US state data), that concluded people who were not fully vaccinated were hospitalized at least five times more often than fully vaccinated people, and they died at least eight times more often.

If one or two percent of the population require medical care en masse due to a surge in covid19, it overwhelms and breaks healthcare systems - which is a crisis.
This has been a major reason for lockdowns and has been stated as such from the beginning.

in France, the overwhelming of the hospitals is due to the constant decrease in infrastructure / employees over the past years. There were protests already in 2018 and 2019...

considering that 1% of the population die each year mostly of aging and chronic diseases (cancers, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, 'autoimmune diseases', organs failure), and these people are the same people who are very sick with the sarscov2, do you really think there was a way to save them ?
temporarily maybe, but it is not possible to undo many years of chronic damage and accumulated toxicity in a few weeks...
