I apologise in advance but as the years have gone by I have personally began to enjoy the 'modern C++ up to and including C++17 anyway. I Haven't had a need for any of the features of 20 just yet.

Saying that, I would never attempt to use if it wasn't for the visual studio editor helping out with its awesome debugger. The compiler can still crap too many error messages but I've got used to those now though.

Ah yes, the joys of tweaking somebody else's bloom code (copied from the code library) and getting it working just right.
Then maybe reposting it as an improved version back into the code library (with proper ref to the original owner)

Was a damn sad day when the BlitzBasic forums went offline forever.

Part of the reason Mark's Monkey and Monkey 2 languages failed was he moved them too close to C++.  At that point you might as well use C++ instead.

Early 2000's I delved into Blitz, met all of you along the way obviously, maybe not talked directly or whatever, but back in the days, seen most of you's around the doors, and, it seems the good'uns where actually the ones that stuck around in some form, even when Blitz became a dead parrot, and ended up using something else. It's actually good to see that even after all these years, there is still a little group of us going, not Blitz specific par say, and not just on these forums (Jays SoCoder has some old timers as well), but familiar avatars and names are still circling... Me myself have been in and out, life circumstances depending, but, even though we've all had little ups and downs, because lets face it... 20+ years some of us have been floating about, we're not going to get on or not fall out sometime, but, we're all still here and, well, it says a lot if you ask me.

I like that! :)

Me too!  It's the bedroom coder ethic of the 80's continued through with more powerful BASIC languages or variants, and a similar close community.

Well, that and you needed a masters degree in fucking about to get it to graft on various platforms.

Yes, you could argue (the same for C++ 20 too) if you don't need those features, then don't use them.  But when it comes to sharing code some people will use them!  Then you're stuck.  They're using features and code you do not understand!

Well that is just not acceptable IMO.  You really need to do the work to ensure your users have an easy way to use all of the features on the platforms you support - or don't support those platforms!

I found the forum when it was not an official forum yet I think. Was there not a American who had the first bb forum? I changed my nickname, I was Nebula then. Blitz2d was not out that long and I had been spending that time before that with Visual Basic. Buying the variations of Blitz was difficult as I had no credit card and got lucky when I got b3d and b+ at my birthdays.

It took so long before I could actually program a bit better. If I had a time machine and a list of tips I could give myself :)

That would of been Krylar, the American chap your on about, he ran BlitzCoder, some good members on there too... theChange, Cyberseth, I remember mearrin69, Eikon, DarkEagle... Oh, and dont forget Ashcroft, he was a card, always popcorn at the ready when he was floating about... I remember a thread where we had a "post a pic of yourself", and he put one up, though, behind him, there was a cheese slice stuck on the wall, I looked and thought "WTF is that... Is that a... Cheese slice on his wall?", and, yeah... It was :D lol I do recall he was a bit of a handful for mods and such though, any form of forum "authority", I never really had anything to do with him apart from, well, get fat off popcorn! :D

Eeeee eh, theres probably loads more members names will crop up in my minds eye, but, yeah, great site when it was at full swing, but again, just a fond memory! :)

Krylar was awesome and ran the 'more fun' version of the official site.   ;D

I recall GabrielKnight becoming a mod, then, hit a spot of bother with a couple of naughty members, I sort of got the impression they were a bit jealous he was "made up" so to speak, still... Oh, and the time nearly everyone put my avatar there in their own avatars, or shopped him into other images... I logged in one day and piehole there was everywhere... I was like "What the f***!?!", lasted a whole day that did! :D

I'm not sure anymore. Blitzcoder first was Christian coders. Before that there was a official blitz basic forum there was a unofficial blitz basic forum. I recall it might of been "shane monroe" who ran it?

It has been 20 years ago though.

Dabz

BlitzCrunch or DevCrunch... Something along the lines of that?

I vaguely remember another one, which seemed a lot quieter when I tiptoed on the scene...

20 years man, where does the time go?
