Raspberry Pi 400

A new Raspberry Pi Computer is now available.  It's an all-in-one solution with a slightly faster (300Mhz) 4Mb pi4 built-into a keyboard (like an Amiga 500) and passively cooled with a huge heatsink.  You can buy it stand alone or in a kit with a colour manual, mouse and everything you need to get up and running.  I ordered a kit from the Pi Hut.

If they only had made the 8 gb version. Then it would really be a desktop replacement. I wonder how hot this version gets with 300 mhz more speed.

Sdding to this, some of the madeup color shemes Perifractic showcased were just gorgeous.

Yeah I'm suprised they didn't go straight to an 8Gb version, I guess they wanted to see how this new configuration sold before doing so (now sold out at Pi Hut at least).  The second video above shows some thermal tests and it keeps cool due to a revision to the CPU to better deal with heat management (see video below at 12:55) and a massive heatsink.

Yeah they certainly did, tricky to get it looking professional though.  You'd have to re-spray everything and apply stenciling to put back the key symbols?  And then the ZX Spectrum version would need to have a printed Spectrum Symbol Sticker stuck on it?

Received my Raspberry Pi 400 today and straight away I noticed it's running snappier and around 10 degrees cooler over a Flirc Case pi3 for general use (temperature gauge displays on the taskbar).   8)  Performance over a pi3 is massive but apparently much cooler than a pi4 under stress, I've yet to test that.  I have a standard pi4 too, but that's running RetroPie and gets quite warm or hot (depending on the game).

The Pi400 is now back in stock.

The Raspberry Pi 400 Mouse is not great.  It's wired (and a short wire at that).  I prefer a Bluetooth Mouse, no dongle (taking up a USB Port) or wire required so ordered this and it has just arrived.  Cheap in every way but it works better than the supplied one, it's comfortable and functional - plus I didn't want to spend too much on a pi mouse:

The quality of the official mouse and keyboard isn't great, quite cheap feeling to be honest, but considering what you get for the price from the full desktop kit you wouldn't really expect tip top premium externals. Definitely worth grabbing a decent bluetooth mouse.

The Pi 400 is pretty tempting but the missus might go all kung-fu on me if I plonk another keyboard / computer next to the Vic 20.
Mac Studio M1 Max ( 10 core CPU - 24 core GPU ), 32GB LPDDR5, 512GB SSD,
Beelink SER7 Mini Gaming PC, Ryzen 7 7840HS 8-Core 16-Thread 5.1GHz Processor, 32G DDR5 RAM 1T PCIe 4.0 SSD
MSI MEG 342C 34" QD-OLED Monitor

Until the next time.

You're doing it all wrong. The way to get approval for stuff like this is to suggest it as a Xmas present for yourself, or make it so they get some benefit from you acquiring it. Not that I'm saying I'm an expert on this.

Yes, dear. I'm thinking of getting myself a new iMac. This one isn't really cutting the mustard for comping and video editing etc. I probably need to spend a fair bit of (my) money to get this but you could use my old machine to do your ancestry work.

Yes, dear. I'm thinking of getting one of these new Raspberry PI's for some retro gaming. They're not too expensive. Maybe you could get it for me as a xmas present if I send you the link. You did ask me for suggestions after all.

Yes, dear. I think I want one of those nice new retro Vic 20's.
BUT YOU ALREADY HAVE THAT C64 THING TAKING UP SPACE !!!!
Ok dear.

(asks mum to buy it instead)

lol @ Xerra.  I've yet to receive my ZX Spectrum Next into the Man Cave, so I'll need to make room for that...I think that will do then.   ;)

Oh yes the pi 400 is built to a budget, but for what you get in the box it's great value for money.  The keyboard's not bad but I just don't like wired mice.
