..question for Linux dudes..

hi, Michael here. um. i recommend choosing a distribution that you can google how to (most common general purpose distro) terminal/console cmd commands to do or install stuff. i dont always remember terminal commands so i google them.

warning that the latest ubuntu release didnt have a package in the app center with a version of gnome tweaks to toggle off the disable touchpad while typing (regarding video games), i had to google and found an obscure stackexchange thread page that had a terminal command to do it.

i've been seeing news articles on my phone about some best choice for windows users to switch to (which zorinOS used to be but it was buggy for me several years ago.)

timeshift is something like windows restore points if you have the file space, to go back in time & undo  if you mess something up.
I'm just a mentally ill person stuck in person. I've had quite an online history and of media such as role plays with people that became movies (for real) among other things and content. I wanted to be an online famous person at one time. Unfortunately it's ill and I'm anonymous.

I bet you will find a lot of "annoyancies" ("in windows this works this way!!!") but simply think of what you use in Windows ...

..I have seriously decided to migrate to Linux, however, as its obvious, im not sure which one exactly..so my plan is to install Mint on to one of laptops that im no longer using, and get myself used to linux environment and as my confidence grows and i feel natural about it, i want to move all of my development tools (FPGA, MCU etc design/programming) on to linux, at some point..some very very old stuff i have to leave on windows (XP/7) as those tools are no longer supported but i have plenty of chips that old machines uses so i have to keep this up, but majority, i will move to linux soon enough...im just tired of M$ nonsense, and at same time, tuning up linux for specific industrial use, seems to be very attractive for what i do for living, compared to agony of knocking around with M$ to get XP/7/10 embedded versions...i just had it enough, so i have decided, and any annoyance with linux i see as a learning process, compared to annoyances M$ pulling out of thin air..

@Naughty Alien: If you intend to try out a number of distributions, then you should consider using a multi-boot USB installer, such as YUMI or Ventoy.
Setting up these multi-boot tools with a number of live-cd disk images allows you to test a number Linux distributions without having to mess around with creating a USB boot drive and installing every time.

My personal opinion is for someone wishing to try out Linux is to go for Linux Mint Mate. It's not too graphically heavy on older hardware, and has a reasonable desktop environment.
To install basic applications, you use the Software Manager. For more control, use the Synaptic Package Manager. The latter is a front end GUI to the APT package manager.

after all my time with linux, I would recomend installing on an external hard drive, try lots of versions , as thats a big part of the fun, get an external CD drive and try some 32 bit versions, you can get versions to do jobs, like a PC resue bootup, or partition bootup, etc...

dont start off thinking its going to be your main OS so chooseing is important, you will use lots of em, thats what linux is like. it depends on your current project on what system you will be using. I know it goes against the grain when you come from windows, but its fun

you will find you want diff partitions and reinstall etc... its a learning curve at the start, you can try many OS in one day, so dont worry

you can even have several verrsions on several external drives,

best tip I can give you, is have a second PC connected to internet, for help while you install, and downloading tools you find you need, or diff OS etc...

also, you can install quite well as linux is very portable, on a virtual PC or virtual box, you can choose a shared folder with your windows, and as long as your not playing call of duty or something on linux your fine.

Windowsfx is pretty good it actually mimics Windows so you have Linux and Windows in one.

So if your used to using windows it's a good way to migrate to linux!?

It even installs Wine and everything so you can run your Windows.exe's as well.

The only down side is you need to buy a License to unlock all the goodies :)

You could even do a dual boot system.

Windowsfx, now called Linuxfx, is what I would call being in a grey area in many ways. These distributions that are aimed at Windows users have never been successful, and sometimes make over exaggerated claims of it's features and compatibility. Also these types of distributions are sometimes on the borderline of Free Software Foundation licencing terms.

Guess what popped up on my Youtube home page. And it's about Windowsfx/Linuxfx/Wubuntu. So watch and beware.

Hmm. I watched the video to the end :-X

It Seems the security issue has been fixed?!

I have not been affected in anyway. There isnt much difference when you use the free copy! But after the 30 day period you get limited use.

So to keep full functionality of the product you need the License. It Also does all automation of installs Wine in particular.

Im not saying things have been changed in anyway since i got my copy.

For Linux or Wubuntu to be created in the Likeness of windows says something about Windows it's self really! However even the strong Macintosh community there Os still resembles windows?

I tried Windows mint, Zorrin, Peppermint and Parrot OS. When i first experimented with Linux. But always wanted to make it look like windows?

Wether ive become set in my ways and dont like change im not sure. Or the Os setup up is easier to use and get working than the UBuntu/linux versions. I suppose is personal preference.

Im not saying the product is safe to use either, but windows is constantly releasing security updates. Im not sure about the Macintosh side of things though?

Over the years there have been PlayStation, Microsoft XBOX, Netflix, Northen Ireland police database hacking etc.. The list goes on.

Is there any system these day's really safe!?

With all the free Open source product downloads of Linux distributions Who knows what backdoor access's there are or could be!? ::)

On the another side i think Windows 12 is coming :-\

And who knows what Microsoft and Apple have been up to.... But then they don't need back doors when they basically now require users to sign up for an account to use their operating system that's comes preloaded with unneeded software, telemetry, adverts and now possibly taking snapshots of any activity on the computer.

When it comes to open source. The chances are that someone will spot something fishy in the development, or the testing branch. Which is why any sane Linux user shouldn't be using a rolling release if they intend to use it for use where security would be a bit of a concern. Stick with those distribution with long term support and well known.

Guess you didn't see the bit about the attitude of the person(s) behind this OS and when this security issue was picked up, the misleading websites, the possible miss use of trademarks and licences. The whole thing reeks of something rotten.

No. If a distribution is trying to impersonate MS Windows like Wubuntu/Windowsfx/Linuxfx/Lindows/Linspire, then it's to try to cash in on MS Windows. The same goes for those that mimic MacOS.
