UE5 - Nanite
« on: May 29, 2021, 15:45:12 »
What do you guys think about the latest UE5? Nanite looks fantastic. I think it's a marvel of engineering, I am really curious how they managed to get such levels of optimization.

I am guessing we're entering a new era. I've been looking at games for a long time and I think with UE5 humanity has crossed an important threshold: realism is now within grasp for anyone, especially given the ever growing photogrammetry libraries and the tech available. Is it desirable as an artistic direction? In many cases that level of detail goes against game play. If we look at Quake Champions, it's clear that something as basic as spotting the enemy players is way harder than in any previous version. On the other side Among Us is a masterpiece which thrives along side hyper realistic games and serves as an example for good gameplay with art that serves it. I'm not saying hyper realism is bad, I'm just saying it's very hard to use it well and we'll probably see a lot of hyper real junk in the near future.

I also think people will face new challenges and will find new ways of expression which is very exciting.

I am guessing VR will also benefit tremendously.

The export for the nanite demo on Android is 24 gigabytes. So, it's fair to say that we have a long way to go yet. Desktop export is 5gb smaller. Just for a demo. Now imagine a game for desktop using the full features of UE5? We would need to download it over a 2 year period on a 100mbit connection.

Yes the level of details is nice but it also comes at a price.

Very impressive stuff and it’ll be interesting to see what the professionals come up with over the coming years. Hopefully with game designers to match.

Mac mini ( 2018 / 2020 ), 3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, 1TB NVMe, eGPU Radeon Pro 580 8 GB, LG Ultragear 27GL83A-B 27 Inch
Mac mini (2020 ), M1 SoC, 8 GB LPDDR4, 512GB NVMe
Commodore VIC-20, 1.1Mhz MOS 6502 CPU, 5KB RAM, VIC ( 6560 ) GPU

Until the next time.

It's amazing stuff - sort of breaking down an image into smaller and smaller parts - similar to voxels but using their megascan system applied to both models and textures.

it very left field thinking, technical and uber impressive

Yea, that's a bummer, maybe they'll figure out a way to compress all that but I don't expect much smaller. On the other hand, 100mbit connections are a thing of the past in big cities. 25 gb is a matter of minutes on gbit, but 250 or even 500gb is not a trivial matter, not to mention the storage. Hard drive manufacturers will have to start inovating too.

I like Unreal Engine 5 Editor as it is quicker, Smoother but at the moment....my graphics card Geforce 1050ti at the moment and I want to upgrade to Geforce 3070. The price is madness of the Geforce 3070 then I had good look at AMD 6700XT and so I will wait when the price go down and get one next year as UR(Unreal Engine) 5 will be ready in early 2022 hopefully!

The character face expression is long way ago as I think you wont see in real time face expression like your face muscle movement real time as that would be either in Unreal Engine 7 or 8 as then that would be PS 7 or PS 8 when everythings get too real Graphics!

Here what I think future of Playstation....(my preditions)

Name Console - Computer Power - Release Date
     PS 5          - 10 TERAFLOPS   - 2020 November
     PS 6          - 20 TERAFLOPS   - 2028 September
     PS 7          - 30 TERAFLOPS   - 2036 September
     PS 8          - 41 TERAFLOPS   - 2044 November
