Quote..well..what would be possible benefit, if any, out of this ?

Writing an Operating System is seen as one of 'the dark arts' of coding, so some will be very interested to see just what OS code looks like, even if it's an out-dated OS.

And if you've worked on MS DOS like Dave you might want to revisit the code  :D : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR6F0EdyulA&ab_channel=Dave%27sGarage

also a credited souce for DOS rather than some unknown zip, and I once installed dos on a windows PC, it made a 16bit partition, then I installed windows , great fun, and yes Im interested in OS creation, so this is a great thing

Would be better if they had open sourced MS DOS 6.

..yes, specifically, 6.22 will be nice..however, FreeDOS seems to do extend original DOS by far with many goodies added, which makes it interesting choice..

Well you could all call me a masochist, but I really miss the Win95/98 MS DOS days.

Back then you had actual physical media that you could install without having to go online to download 100GB of data (looking at you Boarderlands 3), were not being forced to sign up for an MS account with a new computer running Windows 11 (a bit of a bugger if you haven't got a connection, or try to get pass signing up for a MS account), or having tones of bloatware that was pointless, or being forced fed adverts in the start menu and now the 'new outlook' slipping them in as well.

Oh I almost forgot. You also used to get a printed manual.

The only reason I still use Windows is because of the games I have.

..LOL..so true..i have brought back to life/automated, tons and tons of old industrial machines around here in South East Asia (two nestle factories, aluminium can drink factory filling), rigged with FreeDOS (few windows7 embedded), and with hardware used from ICOP..there is so many systems out there still clocking on some DOS variant, and reason that you mentioned, makes whole thing so robust that i dont think its going away any time soon from industrial machines world..

ICOP boards for those that may need stuff like this..

I wonder how many machines out there still use COBOL. From what I understand there's still some serious money to be earned with the shortage of COBOL programmers and those systems that still use it having difficulties transitioning to other programming languages.

..thing is, most of these industrial systems are robust (mechanically speaking), and they can last virtually, forever with scheduled maintenance..typically, what fails are either sensors/electronic control or requests regarding integration of these machines in to automated process is required...usually factory owner, very very quickly turn back to upgrade of old machines, once price tag for new stuff is presented..not to mention, downtime which costs a bomb, which makes price for retrofitting old machines with new electronics/sensors, very very cheap and desired option..

I did a course in COBOL never used it since :)

Me too lol  :D I did C, Pascal and COBOL at college. I liked the first 2, COBOL I never touched again.
