I grew up on retro 80s stuff, when I made a game with 3 keys Left cursor Right cursor and space to fire, it felt great to me! but I got ASWD was needed. in the 80s we played the games we were given , NOT the games we asked for, I believe thats what made them addictive and arcade. the quirks added to the addictiveness. these new kids are to lazy to play games as is, I think there spoiled for choice so dont want to put time in to playing out of there comfort zone. I mean Left right and fire WTF is up with that.

Enjoy the comfortability of playing an RTS with "left, right + fire" (convenient selection of units ahead!)
Or playing an "click n point" adventure with the keyboard .. (I mean ... I would not even consider playing it with a gamepad ...)

New input options allow for new game techniques.
New hardware allows for advanced game techniques etc and so on.

"Spoiled for choice" is not a matter of "input schemes" but just a matter of ... choices (more games than before).

Back in the 80s. The hardware was limited and thus the games had to be either simpler or very creative. What made games fun were the ideas and playability. And they were very ever rarely shipped with bugs.

In this day and age, the emphasis is on how good the graphics are, trying to push the "message" everywhere in favour of well written story lines, good game play, proper bug fixes, and then blaming the gamers for a product failing with using the word toxic and fans in a sentence.

we did not have online feedback back in the 80s either, we just loved the games. Imagine telling the programmer of space invaders the cooldown on fire was to slow. or pacman dosnt move in correct direction at an intersection. I think its got like the players want it a certain way and wont accept a game anymore

I remember trying to load manic miner into my zx81 because i was fed up off waiting for my ZX 48k Spectrum to arrive. :-X

Those years where the best this was when all games today were invented from.

I love the simplicity of the old games. I remember Quazatron and ranarama with its miny games. Pure brilliance!

When we first saw sandy white's Ant Attack we were blown away!

I have to say i love Games like Quake, Duke Nukem 3d etc... Halo and grand theft, but playabillity starts to go out the window with too much going on. Rather than getting down and dirty and into the groove with the game. Sadly i cant play them to long as i get dizzy and want to throw up!? :(

I remember doing an Xbox live modern warfare thingy. Soon as you got dropped into the arena you were dead! Whats the point of that?

Mind you playing Exploding fist was a nightmare with 9 key combinations to master! Would of loved an xbox controller then :-\

If i grasped the concept of Games programming id be churning out rewrite's of my favourite games with a twist. May be one day!?
Running a PC that just Aint fast enough!? i7 4Ghz Quad core 32GB ram  2x1TB SSD and NVIDIA Quadro K1200 on Acer 24" . DID Technology stop! Or have we been assimulated!

Windows10, Parrot OS, Raspberry Pi Black Edition! , ZX Spectrum 48k, C64, Enterprise 128K, The SID chip. Im Misunderstood!
