Quote from: dawlane on November 13, 2024, 09:02:01I've know a fair few good electricians that have always said that. Just before they use harsh language when working on something that they thought was dead.;-)
When I was a trainee Lecky a few decades ago (on a scheme called the YTS) my boss asked me to change a 'joystick' looking style plug on a boiler. He neglected to tell me it was plugged in on the other side of the expansive kitchen, still here to tell the tale - Just ;)

Now, it just so happend I've a spare 28" telly thats ripe for turning into a home arcade..... when I retire ;)

I'll probably get round to doing all those things I've been meaning to do when they get round to measuring me up for a wooden overcoat.

Yeah. I remember that scheme. There was a national studeht walkout over the introduction of that scheme. And depending on who you spoke to it was either the Youth Training Scheme, the Yorkshire Traction Service (only the dumb kids thought it was about one off the area bus services), or as I liked to call it "The Conservatives scheme that replaced apprenticeships, where the employer could get rid of you on a filmsy excuse just before you turned 18, just because they wanted cheap labour and didn't want to pay the 'the trainee' the full wage that they were entitled to."

My old dad used to call us the lost generation. Many on that scheme ended up getting one dead-end job after another as a result of it, unless they were lucky and managed to get into college. And some of them found out that they were better off being a college student than to use the qualifications that they gained to get them a job. They just re-enrolled into a different course, which tied up a placement for someone that actually wanted the qualifications for a chance to enter that line of work. I used to know a couple of people that did that. And one of them was the best educated chef, plumber and electrician that you could ever known. And if they ever got a job with an actual employer in those fields, they wouldn't have lasted two minutes in the job.

The only ones that got the real benefit from the YTS were the employers and those that ran the out of work placement training days.

@dawlane

Ive got my monitor and waiting for my Logiteck 2.1 Subwoofer. I may go wall mount or Table top. I also wan't it to be a Juke Box and play VEVO videos.

Wouldn't it be Great to have a Juke Box screen Emulating the Singles going around on the Carousel and flipping over to be played by the Stylophone?

Would have glued the top part to avoid having visible screw holes. Except you plan to cover them anyways.

Talking about covers: think about using some plywood to cover the screen borders ... this allows you to eg have nice colorful stuff ("arcade themed") in the "view box"-area without having this Monitor logo visible all the time ("immersion!!").

After painting do not forget to use some varnish to harden the wood a bit - nothing looks worse than "dents" in the wood where your colour is vanished and "wood" looks through.
Exception is of course if you did some "natural wood"-box (so just "oil/wax" and good looking wood).
I could imagine that _I_ would like a wooden box too - maybe "burning" symbols into it (you can even do some cheap "mask + flaming" to burn in forms like joysticks or pacman or ...).

PS: You rounded some elements of the boards (eg top corners of top middle board) but some not (bottom side of the top middle board, the corners of the "round side elements" laying on top of the joystick-plate).
Ensure to "round" all desired elements before painting -- else you might be annoyed at the end each time you "spot" these issues.

Despite these points: this looks quite nice already (base shape looks well "hit"). Always good to have "spare stuff" at hand or cheap to get into your hands. Hope it doesn't become too heavy at the end.

Already got rid

I love the idea of burning symbols into it :-X Ive even toyed with a pallet wood one. For that Retro rustic Fallout look.

It's still work in progress

Im already toying with a headphone plug, Usb C port and an SD card reader somewhere?

So after some hours experimenting.

Ive dumped windows 10 Tiny. Which is pretty good. But running LaunchBox is an absolute nightmare. For a Beginner stay away. I tried Retroarch, RetroBat, Lakka and Batocera.

I haven't tried Lakka yet but settled on Batocera which is sort of easy to get going! :D  . It's also a Linux OS and dosent have all the overload of running a Windows Os and something else on top off it.

Batocera does run MAME even though it's not advertised?

Im already shrinking the depth of the cabinet as there is so much space inside. But i want my woofer to work good so i may have to drill some ports in the cab.

Mame set is a 74Gb file :o
