Qube, I'm a registered user on several forum boards and all of them allows users to edit their posts forever. It's the most common. When I registered here it was the norm so if you want to change that it's like changing conditions in a contract. First you have to warn users that a "policy" change is coming and give them some time to adjust. And also maybe see if they like it? I think you should give the right back to the users on these forums to change/delete messages and then announce that you will make changes.
There is a privacy policy but no contract regarding the forum and never will be. If I fancy changing the theme, add / remove features then with all due respect that's entirely up to me.

Members can still edit any posts that are less than 24 hours old and if any member does require regular access to edit older content they can contact me and have that privilege. If a user has no genuine reason to edit their old content then it remains. Anyone can have their account removed at any time but posts are public domain with the username changing to Guest. Personal information will never be divulged and deleted on request of account removal.

Remember this site is not a democracy unless I say so :))

Fair enough.

Naahh... I cannot make my content "public domain" (this is something not "existing" in Germany). I can only give non-exclusive rights to use it for whatever others like to use it.

But this needs to be stated on registering ...else the rights for "complex post content" are surely a mine field.
Hmm ... think nobody of us thinks so serious so ... did not want to open a can of worms now.

My $0.02, I think locking posts from the poster is not a good idea. People should be allowed to change their mind and/or update content.
So what if gfk edited his posts. They were his posts.  Now we have to beg if we want update an old post with new info or details?  Gfk's behavior was his own, it's a bit overkill imo to change the policy for everyone because of him.

Locking old content is for some very serious reasons:

eg SuspiciousUser could write:

"Steve Elliot you are so smart and I admire you"

Now Steve thanks the one in a reply "Hah, nice to hear!".
GW also replies ... with a "thumbs up"
Qube checks the thread - nothing to worry, going on.

Now, 2 weeks later the Suspicious User changes the content of the post ... "Qube is a ugly bloke and his computer should burn" (replace this with some racism or harassment post) ... see how your replies become ...... they shine under a totally different light. And if Qube even "replied" to the thread - it looks for outsiders as if the admin goes "OK" with whatever was written there (else he surely have moderated the thread). In Germany the reply of the forum maintainer/owner/... is a valid reason in arguments ... legal arguments (I had to pay a lot of money to have replied in a thread in which others blamed a company to betray users - as they wrapped freeware in dialer/auto-phone-calling software - when dialup modems were still widely used. they would not have been able that easily without my reply/interaction in the forum thread)

Editing old posts can lead to misunderstanding as cites are no longer "valid". You could either manipulate the stuff you cited (the cite box in the reply) or the original post could be modified.

This is why some websites - eg github - allow you to see the "edit history" and compare what was changed. So in essence they keep a history for each post (if needed).

So a compromise - albeit most probably not existing as extension for the forum yet - would be to "store" a post history on edits and after a week or so the history is "cleaned". That way Qube could "undo" mass-edits.

With each new post you have a 48 hour window to amend before you no longer can not. For 99% of cases this is never going to be an issue.

If you have a genuine need to regularly edit / update old posts then just PM me that's what you want to do. No begging required.

This way old posts can't pointlessly be changed and if you have a worklog or posts that do require editing after 48hrs then that option is still available. I don't see the issue with that as PM'ing me is far less annoying for everyone than having loads of posts wiped out due to someone having a hissy fit. Also those with a genuine need are far less likely to go on a editing rampage of all the posts they've made.

All members can now edit their own posts again from their first to last without restrictions \o/

An edit post history will be kept so users can see all the edits made to a post over time.

Happy? ;D Good, bye :))

Nice one.

Very minor: The popup-window misses a background colour.

Did you change something else? started to see "1 empty line" becoming "2 empty lines" again.

So any "text + empty line + text" becomes "text + empty line + empty line + text"

edit:

Also ... the "modify message" box now is already wysiwyg rather than a "raw text box".

Check for

1 empty line

1 empty line ... succeeded by 2 empty lines

Works ;)
