Title: Next game competition
Post by: Xerra on August 02, 2021, 21:26:08
Was just thinking that the next game competition could be something like one of these make a game which can only be played with one button.

Good idea. There are many possibilities...

I like that idea too. Not sure if others will though as any type of restrictions seem to incur a mass debate :))

So... Anyone who's interested in entering the next game comp, what do you think about this idea?

Sounds all right to me.

Up for that. Maybe also a vector based graphics restriction  to reduce asset creation time?

Yup, vector could be good. My artwork is obviously considerably improved when it's only line drawing I need to do.

In a nutshell the general consensus for the basics is :

1.. Vector art only
2.. Game can only use one key ( no mouse for gameplay )

Thinking further on this, maybe have an exception for a normal games operation outside of game-play. What I mean by that is you can have your menu to toggle options like music/sound, have a pause and quit game key, but the gameplay itself can only be played via the one button. Perhaps also allow the player to choose what button they want to use, just in case not all of us are space bar warriors?

When we say vector art are we just talking about graphics themselves all being done with line commands and funky maths or just basically graphics that aren't filled in, and we can still do stuff like have an animated sprite simulating how it would look in animation? I'm shite at the kind of maths which does the kind of graphics like the original Elite, for example.

Outside of game play it would be best to allow anything as title screen and menu options need not suffer the nightmare of single key navigation.

Vector art wise I was thinking graphics that are either hand drawn lines, line commands or whizzy math based stuff. No filled polygons or textures. Lines can be any colour and also may have a glow effect.

I would draw a few graphics to show what would be allowed and what wouldn't when posting the comp. it would allow for creative freedom, faster asset output and more of a level play field in the graphics area.

What's that, Qube? You'd do the graphics for my game? That's damn kind of you :-)

Don't panic - I'd ask my buddy blinkok really :-)

I think purely lines would be difficult. I don't see any harm in allowing filled polygons. Not textures but flat colour.
Just my 2c

lines is lines
filled polygons are not lines

from the arcades:
asteroids, major havok, spacewar, tempest, battle zone, red baron and many more...

think anything on the vectrex - hers a color version with examples

Not a visual style I enjoy.
I could do the "shading" with line commands too (so not filled polygons ... but a set of many line commands) but this is not what Qube seems to "plan". Am not a fan of these 70s or very early 80s arcade games and their visual style . I dislike these "show through" graphics (so not filled with black inside the outlines of the objects).
For me the "one button" limitation would be almost good enough. Vector lines is then another really "harsh" restriction. Maybe this makes game play choice a bit ... too limiting (of course only my POV).

Good luck and have fun you upcoming contestants. Of course I will feedback "critically" if some of you have worklogs then :p.

bye
Ron

Not sure on all the details yet but if I say filled polygons of a single colour are allowed then that just opens it up to untextured 3D modelling.

I'd like to level the play field a little so gameplay becomes more important spending half of your time creating graphical assets.

Ideas?

I was waiting for this one....

I dont like sandwiches....
my keyboard doesn't have hamsters...
My mouse has just had babies...
I only eat round things...
can't we just use black oh and and white plus yellow, cause my dog like bananas?...
I love 3d but have only got some knitting...
My Boa constricts so I dont do restrictions...
I dont do duvets...
etc, etc...
;D

Qube ignore the whining \o/

On second thought i guess that's ok. Focus on gameplay

So, to summarise, line graphics only, any colour but no fills. You can only use single button (spacebar, say) during gameplay, but anything goes for the intro/menus etc?

One button and lines... So this is a 1D game then?

I lost the rest of the comments after Steve mentioned Vectrex. What a concept that was. And it had some really great games. Pity it never caught on - it was a really cool looking machine.

And I hereby vote that we make a new rule that Adam has to actually code his game with a one-button keyboard, just so we can hold him back and give the rest of us a chance :-)

A very cool machine, yes.  I remember seeing games like Asteroids, Battlezone and Tempest in the arcades, and a dedicated arcade machine or a Vectrex machine were the only machines that could accurately produce that wonderful glowing neon light.  All of the light and magic is gone with some of these emulated versions these days - they're just a bunch of lines.

Battlezone really did look brilliant with it's glowing vectors.

BattleZone such a cool console with the tank controls too ;)

So you decided on what the comp is going to be?

Yeah, pretty much decided. I think no matter what you choose you'll never please everyone :o but I'd like the comps to be as open as possible to let creative juices flow.

I've also decided to make the prize fund different, guaranteed and not requiring donations ( there are some donations left from before which will be used in this comp ). I'll be adding £100 for every person who enters up to a maximum of £1000. The final prize with then be split equally between the top 3 winners.

The comp and details will be posted soon ( within the next 72 hours max )

This is actually a really good idea. We've only broken ten entries once, I think, so this could be a great way to encourage new entrants to participate for the first time as they're very likely to get at least some reward for their effort.

Battle zone got remade.

Look's like I'll need to dust off my old line vector code.... of fake the whole thing with warping sprite meshes.

How do you dirve a tank AND shoot with just one button?

Tank auto moves, tap a key to change direction, hold key to start a shot and release to shoot? Tank on rails?

Some one button ideas I read a while back ...

I was thinking that it could be done something like tempest, but obviously a different perspective. You're always turning right, and you go the opposite way when you hold down your button. Firing is automatic.

Not mention one can use timers for additional functionality.

One button - more suitable for smartphones. For a computer, this option will, of course, limit and give "voltage" to the coders ("how can this be done ???? ...").
As a result, there will be specific gameplay. And someone will invent an inconveniently controlled game system.
But if the theme is still "One button" - well, you can get a new unusual experience. :)

If you think creatively then having only one button isn't as restrictive as you think it is. Just think of it like a mouse but without using it to move a cursor.

One-button game is a very innovative idea. Well done. I believe that very creative entries will be submitted by members. However, it is not an easy challenge as well. Anyway, the final results of the contest may be very, very surprising. Sure.
